okay, so this is what I've gathered from all of this, I'm sure a lot of it is wrong but I'm just trying to get a grasp on the important parts of this story. Sorry for the length. Please add your thoughts where needed.

From the beginning:

- Syal sees visions, him and his followers become sponsored by the Baron of Therengia, who figures what the hell, let these zealots fight for me against the Dragon Priests, which we are having problems with, can't hurt.

- First Hounds of Rutilor formed (completely separate group), were good clerics and "paladins", fight against The Dragon Priests and Dzree- all were killed.

- Syal and his group fight the Dragon Priests and the dragon priests' minions.

- Syal and group perform "The Bonding". This ritual sealed away a great evil, bigger than the dragon priests themselves. What was the evil? The Bonding works, imprisoning the great evil, but it's not perfect. The evil can escape, briefly or incompletely.

- Details on the bonding are given to Emille for her to hide until such a time that it needs to be revealed. Knowing the details mean not just knowing what the bonding is, but possibly how to "unbind".

- The remainder of Syal's followers create the first paladin council, and basically the first paladin guild as we know it.

- Medern, the last of the original seven, who was once Syal's squire, constructs the first guildhall in Theren. Far down the line, a second-generation councilmember named Kraphae, steals and messes around with a bunch of the relics and artifacts. Is thought to have rewritten the paladin code (resulting in the code that we know now). Council finds out about some of his trechery and boots him out. Shortly after, Medern is murdered and the first guildhall is burned down. Kraphae is thought to be the perpetrator, but it's never proven. The altered code, written largely to pacify Therengian nobility and the Baron, stays.

- Emille, the "caretaker of truth" has two tombs made. One in the Hib guild proper, which is obviously fake, and another hidden far away that's much more ghetto looking, which both Oane and Emille refer to as also being a ruse. (which means, where is the actual site, and is that the one with the details about the Bonding?)

- Dreldan, one of the councilmembers, who may have been a "dark paladin" oversees the construction of the paladin guild in crossing. It was finished when he was an old manand he was made crossing guildleader.

- Dreldan passes the torch to Beren.

- Beren is removed from office officially for being too slack in his management of the guild. Unofficially, it was because he started asking questions about things the current council doesn't want to talk about. He wouldn't let it go, so the council kick him out and brings in..

- Darius, a much more strict leader (who is also much more loyal to the council and will do as he is told). Youngest guild leader ever (perhaps there's a reason?) Beren goes into hiatus.

- Oane comes into the picture. He's a part of the current paladin council. Lorekeeper, whatever. Too curious for his own good. Unearths a bunch of stuff that the current council seems to be keeping under wraps. Oane becomes wanted by the paladin council and is on the run. hangs out at Emille's tomb, researching frantically. Refers to Beren possibly hiding beyond Corik's wall.

- Darius allows people to dig a little deeper into what's going on without actually disobeying his orders.

- Oane is found and killed by the Lost monster (is this the evil put away by the Bonding leaking out? Furthermore, why would it want Oane killed?) Asks people to find the "Loremaster" (Ezruh).

- Ezruh is killed by the Lost monster, which seems to be called upon by the Hounds of Rutilor. She is told to mind her own business. Does this mean the Hounds are in league with this "great evil" if the Lost monster actually is the same being that the bonding put away? If the Hounds are an arm of the current Paladin Council, does this mean the Council is in league with this evil also? Why is this evil becoming stronger?

Now, the visions..
<<The two animals stare at you, and you could almost fancy they are disappointed. The lion turns its back to you and walks away, the mongoose scampering after him.>>

... with Botolf conspicuously absent.

<<Unsurprisingly, the fighters are evenly matched. What few blows are not parried or batted away fail to penetrate their armor. Only as the fight goes on do you notice a distinction between the two: one radiates a sense of... wrongness, a detectable repugnance that can only be described in terms of spiritual or moral worth.>>

Two figures, identical but different.

<<a lone figure battling against evil>>

Syal?

Which leads us to the bonding itself- what is it? To quote Oane, he says he believed the term was "more literal". Was it the actual bonding of man and god?

Could it be that the "Bonding" is termed such because it describes Syal bonding with Botolf to drive back a great evil? This evil was so great that it was said it actually draw the attention and wrath of the gods. Is it possible that Syal and Botolf, both the same entity yet different, continually battle tirelessly against the great evil, keeping it in check in some kind of different plane of existence (hence Botolf's absence)?

If we find out the details of the binding, is it then possible to "unbind" them, unlocking Botolf (and his powers/gifts for the guild) and Syal from their struggle?

If we do that, who then is there to defeat this evil?

- Drawing upon Kattena's earlier posts and musings, Emille's weapon, "the fist", located in a swamp under Haven may be a large part of the puzzle. Does it need to be perceived to see it's history and significance?

Maelshyve, a demi-goddess, is the owner of that fortress under the Zaulfug swamp. Three artifacts are held in her fortress. The blight fist being among them. Can Maelshyve be the darkness Syal and Botolf bound together to fight? The Zaulfung swap is nicknamed "the place where the dragon fell".

Further dragon imagery is found in references of the final battle- is Maelshyve represented by a dragon on the mortal plane? This is probably a huge stretch.

If you got this far, thanks for reading all this, a little bit too much to make sense out of.

Maybe I've had too many Paladin conspiracy theories, but that doesn't sound too far of a stretch except maybe at the end.

I guess some people would probably care what you think, but I don't. I'm participating in an event, and my guild leader was there from the beginning to the end of that event.
I'm sorry if you were misinformed, or if you have some kind of beef with me, this is not in the appropriate folder. And I won't care enough to respond there if you do post a thread, by the way, just once here to get my point across.

Sorry for all the posts in your folder, but I'm trying to help, not take over.

Glemm, I brought down a group of people to Maelshyve's fortress. Yazegi, Moleki, Kraggur and Constanctina.
So we had two Bards, an empath, a paladin and a moon mage. Our Cleric unfortunately had to leave, that was Alexsei. So we had someone from each branch of magic down there to examine the weapons, especially the maul or "Blight Fist." Here is what we found:

On the weapon rack you see a delicate silver hand-scythe, a gargantuan animite-studded maul and a jagged bone broadsword.
>l maul
The magnificent specimen of war consists of a thick trunk of petrified black ironwood. The weapon ends in a massive steel head embedded with sharp animite studs tinged with a suspicious green slime. Engraved deeply into the lustrous wood is the name, "Blight Fist".

As you reach for the maul, a vile glimmer of black radiance races across its surface, a matching chill slithering down your spine. You recoil, realizing the ward that must be placed on such things.

No perceive or focus for Kraggur or myself on any of the weapons.

Moleki said it was blessed: The animite-studded maul is blessed and should last for 163 more strikes.
The hand-scythe is also blessed as is the broadsword.

Our cleric had issues and was unable to make it.

Our empath sensed nothing.

Minor point with the recap. Beren didn't take over from Drelden. There was quite some time between the two. Great info though :)

Yeah, I thought it was a she for a while, until I saw that the "loremaster" Oane was referring to was a he. I'm like, wait, wasn't the loremaster Ezruh, and then I figured it out. I won't lie, though, I had to check on elanthipedia to make sure. :D

Thought I'd share this vision with everyone interested in this line, as it might touch upon the issues related to the Paladin and Bard Guilds.

You focus inwardly searching for insight into your future.

You see an elderly Human farmer, hoe in hand, working in a garden. A pillar of fire and sunlight erupts some feet behind him, a screaming flame that somehow that does not consume the vegetation beneath it. The sunlight brightens and dims rhythmicly, while the crackle of the flame transforms into a polyphonic voice.

"They need to die."

The Old Man replies nonchalantly, "Everybody dies."

While it has no body language to speak of, you intuit that the flame is not amused. An awkward silence holds until the Old Man speaks again, "Can you do anything about the demon?"

"No."

"Then you have a very serious problem. Good luck with that." With that, the Old Man returns his attention to his vegetables.

Kraggur also got this vision, but his battery died so I'm posting it for him:

Your vision flashes black without warning. Darkness surrounds you. As you draw an uneasy breath, mud and water flow quickly into your mouth and nose, clogging your airways. You blink rapidly as you attempt to pull yourself to fresh air and continued life. You feel the unbearable weight on your chest move toward your neck, like hands wrapping themselves around you in a tight embrace. Just as you start to lose all hope your vision snaps back to normal.

Reminds me of what happens on your way down to Maelshyve's Fortress.

By the way, Madigan is a stick in the mud I am sure on the various theories. I play him as pure LG as possible, so that leads to some very narrow views on things.

Feel free to cajole, attack or whatever for that view. Also, if I am being too much of a stick in the mud while people are trying to go down different paths on this deal, just drop me a whisper and I can dial it back to let other RP's do their thing.

Very fun event, and love some of the theories. You folks are seriously smart on this stuff.

Here's one possibility since we are guessing some up...

The Binding describes a ritual performed or ability utilized to bond with a higher entity. This would be mainly used for the purpose of accessing greater potentials in skill or enhanced ability. Long ago it was used to help subvert a powerful demon. Multiple warriors bond with the demon and with every additional person it overtook, its presence was weakened. This is how long ago Syal was able to defeat the great evil. The lone warrior fighting against a horde of dark twisted paladins is a vision in part based on that battle. The council would hide this ability away because much like meddling with arcane magic, there are chances for some things to go real wrong. One could let something very bad in, or very good, which would also be bad. I would think the Council would keep this ability under wraps for benevolent reason. There may be a few bad apples though that want to access this ability for evil intent or to ensure their position of power. The council probibly decided it was better to hide away the truth then open a pathway for potential disaster.

Just a guess though.

The Binding, you could also call it "canning evil." I find it funny that, after years of being called a tin can, the origins of this nickname for Paladins is based in our histories...

It would be pretty neat if this leads up to our 100th circle ability (one ability based on dark and another being light if possible).

Concerning the bonding theories, is this not what took place with Vorclaf and Meraud?

I had hoped to see something similar with Chadatru and Gyfford happen but no such luck.

No please. I'm just waiting until it comes out that the Paladin Council was really a front for the Dragon Priests and the Code was just an attempt to weaken the Paladin guild, and then we are going to have a long chat about the Code (again).

<<and the Code was just an attempt to weaken the Paladin guild>>

From what it looks like, the original code was amended/rewritten to appease Therengian nobility so that they would continue to sponsor the guild back in the day. Then, it was just accepted as being "the code".

The question is really if the original code was mentioned in Dreldan's diary- the one that Beren found which prompted his questioning of the council and subsequent removal.

The binding sounds like a pact made to:
1- protect a secret from getting out
2- protect an evil from exercising its power

Upon reading, and hearing what darius/ezruh/oane had to say, it reminded me immediately of the "tomb of the primes".

It will be fun times if it really is a conspiracy. However, it will also be fun if the Council was really correct, and what ramifications on those that strayed form the path of law and oaths?

Pretty sure this will impact the "Lawful" nature of my character depending on the outcome. Which, will be a blast either way.
