Here is my short summary.

Here's the beef of the story, I don't have it logged. Sorry it's not more thorough, but you're getting the meat of the story.

This explains why Ezruh got purged:
>per history
You focus your senses on the past events of this room. The room immediately shifts out of focus, then slowly returns back to normal. The Bard Guildleader Ezruh sits behind his desk, pouring over some manuscripts when a man clad in full plate armor enters, walking right past you as if you weren't there.

"The Hounds of Rutilor are seeking a heretic, and I was told you might know where to find him," he says grimly from behind the anonymity of his visor. Ezruh rises and starts to open his mouth to speak, but at that moment a powerful wave of fear fills the room, leaving you as paralyzed as Ezruh appears to be. The shadows around you begin to shift and move, seeping out to fill the room with unpenetrable darkness and an unimaginable sense of horror. Just when you think you can bear no more, the shadows slowly fade back, revealing Ezruh crumpled beside his desk in a pool of blood. The armored man wipes blood from his broadsword and quietly sheaths it before turning to leave.

"Unfortunately, now that I think about it, the heretic I was sent to find was you," he says casually. "If by some miracle they do save you, take a bit of advice. Mind your own business." With that, he exits the office, leaving you shaken and unnaturally cold.

With a start, you find yourself drawn back to the reality of the here and now.
Roundtime: 9 sec.

That is what happened in Haven.

Then we went to search out some dead Dward Paladin named Emille's tomb in Hib, although I didn't get there in time to find out why.But I guess that was what Ezruh was meddling in..

So Darius said the council didn't want us to find the real tomb (the alleged real tomb is visible in the guild memorial room) so I found a torch lever, pulled it, we followed a maze (I dropped coins and we read the images on the ground, which told a story) until we found a soulstone arch and we got Taghz of all people to let us in because Madigan wouldn't go against the will of the Paladin Council. (Wouldn't expect you to btw Madigan, based on your RP)

Darius had told us one thing though, that "they" (I believe the Paladin Council) feared the coffin. So we get past the soulstone arch and Ezruh basically cues me to perceive the coffin.

>per coffin
The chamber slowly fades to darkness, filling you with a quiet sense of dread. You feel alone and isolated, and yet cannot shake the feeling you are being watched. Finally a faint light flickers in the darkness, slowly growing in intensity to reveal the same chamber as it must have been shortly after construction. A pair of Dwarves walk about the chamber, talking in low, hushed voices. One is a young male, the other a charismatic female. Both are clad in gleaming plate armor, and clearly well-armed and prepared for battle.

The young male Dwarf clears his throat and asks the female, "Are you sure about this, Lady? Surely no one would dare desecrate your tomb."

The female Dwarf just chuckles. "Lad, you have far too much faith in your fellow beings. There is no question that my tomb will be desecrated. In fact, that's the entire point of this entire charade. We are sworn to secrecy, my friend, but the truth must one day be known. When the right time comes, our little deceptions will lead the seekers here, to this time and place, and he will try to stop them. In doing so, he will reveal himself, and open the way for them to uncover the truth. We will make sure he believes he must stop anyone from reaching me here.

The male Dwarf frowns. "But what if they don't realize what is happening until it is too late? What if they don't come at all?"

The female Dwarf pats him on the back affectionately. "They will, lad, they will. Was it not decided that I would be the caretaker of the truth, to reveal it when the time was right? They will come, and I will reveal part of the truth to them. The rest they must find on their own, for first they must understand why the truth was hidden, and the dangers it presents to them."

With those words, she turns her gaze directly at you with a twinkle of amusement in her eyes. "The Bonding was a success, you see. But all bindings can become unbound, and should that happen, darkness will once more engulf the lands. The enemy was never truly defeated, merely imprisoned. Imprisoned -- bound, you might say -- in the only prisons that could possibly hold him, but flawed imperfect prisons nontheless. He can see the world clearly from his prison, and scheme his schemes. And sometimes he escapes, however briefly or incompletely. And if the people of the lands knew the truth of what we have done, they may turn against us, and perhaps rightfully so, at least in these dark times. We can only hope that this will not always remain true."

With those words, she turns away to walk beside her companion once more, leaving you to wonder if she really saw and spoke directly to you, or if it was just your imagination. Either way, you feel a sudden surge of malevolence from the surrounding darkness, and find yourself rapidly returning to the here and now as a cold chill washes over you.

Ezruh says, "The Bonding is something I've seen mentioned in various writings from the time the Paladin Guild first formed."
Ezruh says, "No one ever knew what it meant, precisely. In fact, it was one of Oane's obsessions."
Ezruh says, "The first "True Paladin", at least in the sense we know them now, was Syal."
>
Ezruh says, "He supposedly brought several paladins together to oppose some great evil unleashed by the Dragon Priests. They defeated it, but would never speak of how. Only that during this time an event they called the Bonding occured...."

Ezruh says, "..and a Covenant of some sort was made. With whom, it was never really clear. Some claim this was the first Paladin Code. Some claim it is still the Paladin Code. Others...aren't so convinced."

Ezruh says, "But the aftermath of this event lead to the formation of the Paladin Council. Syal himself was killed during the Bonding, or so we are told. The rest of his companions served as early council members."

Marsais asks, "What was this thing the Dragon Priests unleashed?"
>
Ezruh says, "The rest I am quite certain Oane covered in his lectures. There are many who attended these, and probably know more than I."

Ezruh says, "Not quite sure. We do know that it was nearly unstoppable."

Ezruh says, "It wasn't until Oane and his companions faced it that it was defeated."

Ezruh says, "Er - Syal."
>
Ezruh says, "Not Oane."

Ezruh says, "Head still muddled from the attack."

Ezruh says, "That's part of what obsessed Oane. Not the information, but the lack of it. He strongly believed the Council was hiding something."

Loqutis says, "Some have recently started to question if a deal was made to defeat it."
>
Ezruh shrugs.
Ezruh says, "The extent of what I've read."
Ezruh says, "Now, let me add a little advice."
Ezruh says, "Once upon a time, the bard guild was hiding information from their members."
Ezruh says, "I think several here know exactly what I mean."
>
Ezruh says, "And though we did so under best of intentions.."

Ezruh says, "It was divisive and nearly tore the guild apart once the truth came out."
Ezruh says, "I don't know any more about what is behind any of this. I don't know if I want to."
Madigan asks, "However sir, you have left an impression that the paladin guild is acting in a similar manner?"
>
Ezruh says, "But I pray that the end of it all will go better for the Paladin guild than it did for the Bards."
Ezruh says, "Obviously some people think there are secrets being kept. If there are, I hope that, as I said, the end of it goes well."
ou say to Ezruh, "I hear your words, but I think we came out okay."
>
Ezruh says, "I do not want anyone to go through what we did."

You hear a cloaked figure says, "Bravo. You are almost there. I will contact some of you soon. There is much you still must learn. But for now, I'll leave you with this warning. The Bonding. She said prisons. Plural. Yet implied one being. How can this be? And what does it have to do with the Bonding. You are so close, yet so far. I will find you soon. Those that can be trusted."

Ezruh says, "Mark my words, be careful, and think hard about where your actions might lead."

Ezruh says, "If people think they've been misled, no matter whether they HAVE been or not, ugliness may well follow."

Ezruh asks, "And didn't you say Oane was under guard or captured by the council or such?"

Ezruh says, "And now, I think I may make myself very scarce indeed, as soon as we're out of the guildhall."

By the way, this was one of the most amazing events I have ever been a part of. It was fun from beginning to end, thank you so much to everyone involved.

Top notch on the recap Terra. I'll post a log when I get some time later today.

Fun times. Not so sure about Darius' role in going against the Council, but will be fun to see how it plays out.

<<Not so sure about Darius' role in going against the Council>>

Didn't really think he would be one to go against the council. If there are any decisions made by him that appear to do that, I'm sure it would be in the council's best interest (especially to help events unfold so that questions can be answered that are beneficial to the council).

Darius didn't really go against the council, he just very subtly nudged us in the right direction. We made assumptions based on his vague comments. Sorry if I made it seem otherwise. I was also really busy at work too, so I did miss some of the involvement. But not much.

Darius was definitely walking the line during this event, but he's in something of a unique position by being the by-the-book Guildleader that the Council has been relying heavily on during these events. He's seen and heard enough to believe investigation is warranted, but likewise has his orders -- from the very people who apparently need investigating, mind you. This is a classic example of having to choose between what the "law" demands and what you believe to be the right thing to do. His response so far has been to bend the rules as far as he dare without actually breaking them. How long he can or will continue to do so is another question altogether. He's out on a limb and out of his element, but I think once a few more pieces fall into place, the reason why he's taking an uncharacteristic stance (and risk) will become apparent.

Ohh, he was walking the line at best. I always thought the use of Darius for this role a bit odd. Darius was put in place to be a "by the book" paladin guildleader to replace Beren, someone who did "walk the line".

Hey, all good stuff so don't change a thing. Just makes it more interesting. Of course, it makes ol Madigan grind his Lawful proverbial teeth but being in uncomfortable RP positions is the spice of life.

I don't think moon mages are being left out of this, either. Now, of course, I couldn't say for certain that these visions are related to these events, but today is the first time I've seen these. And there's some imagery suggestive of paladins. First:

Your vision sharply blurs, leaving indistinct whorls of color in front of you. When you recover, two animals stand in front of you. One is a prime example of a lion, while standing near its front paws is a tensed mongoose. Moments pass, and then...

...nothing happens. There is no intuitive meaning; no sense of power or destiny. The two animals stare at you, and you could almost fancy they are disappointed. The lion turns its back to you and walks away, the mongoose scampering after him.

And second:

You hear steel clashing against steel! Turning around, you see two figures: both the size and build of a Human male and both clad head to toe in identical, bare steel plate. Each fights with an identical bastard sword and wards their opponent away with identical shields which bear no crests.

Unsurprisingly, the fighters are evenly matched. What few blows are not parried or batted away fail to penetrate their armor. Only as the fight goes on do you notice a distinction between the two: one radiates a sense of... wrongness, a detectable repugnance that can only be described in terms of spiritual or moral worth.

The fight meanders on, with no hint of resolution, until both figures are lost between blinks.

that last vision screams of "evil" paladin vs. the "good" paladin to me, perhaps the secrets that Oane has hinted at the council holding back has something to do with some kind of "evil" Paladin within the guild's history. And maybe this has something to do with the emergence of said faction within the guild.

I don't think you can have an evil paladin, at least not as I understand it. There was a post around when this event started, awhile ago, that explained dark paladins, but they're not evil. Just believe in getting things done a different way. Definitely wouldn't radiate wrongness like in the vision. Unless they plan on releasing dark paladins, and some mechanics to play fallen paladins too, but I can't really see that. I mean, they'd need their own guild, can't see current leaders advancing someone evil like that.

I don't know, I could see maybe some kind of guild leader in hiding maybe advancing said faction of the guild, maybe using some desecrated area beyond Corik's Wall or something. It's just that that last vision...

This vision seems to hint at some kind of upcoming conflict between the "Good" Paladins and some kind of Dark Paladin, be it evil, or chaotic, or whatever you wish to call it, there's something obviously being hinted at here, maybe some kind of system allowing the darker aspect Paladins to make use of our spells or something. I can't say for sure, that's just what it seems like to me.
The last line of that vision says it all for me....Dark Paladins will be here to stay, it hints that there is no resolution and that the fight will continue, perhaps some kind of Darker or Evil Paladin with whom Necromancers can align themselves and through them have access to towns, or something of that nature. Will be interesting to see however.

Dark evil warrior doesn't have to mean they're going to release an evil paladin option. The paladins are warriors who've been chosen by the immortals. Something malevolent like that, especially something that could ally with necromancers, would just be a completely different guild. It's like saying necromancers are just an evil option to the Empath guild. As much as it might be neat for people wanting options in playing evil, look how long it took to release the Necromancer guild. I can't see a whole new guild being released so quickly, especially w/o any sort of hints or info leaking out.

For those interested, this is what I saw when trying to complete a resurrection on Oane before the Council sent people to claim his body. Perceiving prior to this culmination only showed the normal silvered memories and bonded soul.
Oane's spirit struggles to return to the mortal realm, but each time the spirit approaches the body, shadows of the deepest darkness close in around it, preventing it from returning. Eventually, your spell fails, leaving you with the uneasy knowledge that something was deliberately and maliciously interfering with your spell.

Guild Researcher Oane just arrived.

Oane blinks.
Oane gasps!

> l oan
You see Guild Researcher Oane Hannitraulm, a Human Paladin.
Oane has black eyes. He is bald, with pale skin.
He appears to be ancient.
He has a thick bushy mustache that droops heavily on his upper lip and a long shaggy beard.
He is in good shape.

He is wearing a jadeite gwethdesuan, a black linen bag, a pair of burgundy leather boots lined in soft black wool, a blue linen tabard dyed with the bright green emblem of the lion of Chadatru, some brass-riveted jousting plate, an ink-stained leather scholar's satchel, some silvered gauntlets lined with soft sheepskin, a horned great helm lined with soft sheepskin and a simple steel shield emblazoned with two twining olive laurels.

1st death:
Oane says, "Please! He's found me! I don't have long...I am such a fool! To perceive what the past hides...we need the loremaster. Bring him to the Fist...Haven! We must reach him before the enemy does, if it is not too late already! You must reach Ez..."
>
An inexplicable chill decends upon the area as shadows seem to twist and turn around you. Oane clutches his chest, his eyes wide and his face unnatural pale. He takes one painful, gasping breath, then collapses.

* Oane is slain before your eyes!
A soft red glow appears over Oane's body.

2nd death:
A large flock of people rushes into the area! Though some are plainly robed, others are wearing thick armor. As their collective chants of rage fill the air, someone screeches, "There he is! Don't let him get away!"
The crowd quickly converges on Oane, overpowers him and throws him to the ground as dozens of iron-gripped hands pin down his arms and legs.

From the midst of the grumbling crowd, a middle-aged Justiciar with steely eyes steps forward. She proclaims, "Let the wicked tremble before the Hounds of Rutilor!" With that, the woman brandishes a teak standard with a large spear head at the top and draped with a banner representing the Thirteen immortals. She slowly lowers the spear point toward Oane, positioning it so that the condemned is able to fully see the banner as the point drives deeply into his chest and through his heart. As Oane slumps over, the executioner pulls the point back out, and reverently cleans it of blood before setting the standard fully upright again.

* Oane is slain before your eyes!
A soft red glow appears over Oane's body.

The clerics in the group wave their censers superstitiously over Oane's body. As the cloying incense smoke mingles with the scent of death, the crowd leaves, all the while mumbling prayers against evil.

The capture:
Four heavily-armored men arrive, grimly surveying the scene. As their eyes lock on the body of Oane, they work as one to lift the corpse. "By order of the Council, we claim this body as part of an investigation into murder and betrayal. This matter is considered closed. Disperse!"

Yes. Oane is the Paladin Guild Researcher. However, in his studies he appears to have found some dark secrets that the Paladin Council does not want out.

It's funny, because he wanted to reach Ezruh. I think Ezruh wanted to make sure someone else saw the visions, because when Darius was wary about telling us about the tomb, Ezruh suggested that I just go alone, since it didn't seem like Darius trusted Ezruh as much (he did just get purged after all, and has kind of a shady past). So, I loved this event.

I also agree that something is being hidden. Something not good, the feeling I got from the vision makes that clear. Uber creepy stuff, I'm going to follow this event as closely as I can.

Heyo!

Just a quick clarification on the Oane death.

The original plan had been for the first death to be the only death. However, some silly Dev person (who looks and acts suspiciously like me) rolled in the wrong script, and Oane was rezzed from his first death -- which should not have been possible. The Hounds purge was the emergency backup plan, but it still fits the framework of the story, so no harm done.

However, I want to make it clear that the "black smoke monster from Lost" was what originally seemed to kill him, and that was intended to be the one and only death. The rezzing cleric(s) can fill in some details on what happened the second time (that should have happened the first time) during the attempt to restore him.

> <<that last vision screams of "evil" paladin vs. the "good" paladin to me

Before we get too far off on yet another "OMG they are introducing evil paladins!!!111" tangent, I want to toss out a couple of things to consider.

Several visions over the past several months have pointed at paladins fighting each other. As a result, a lot of people see this is a sign of good paladins vs evil paladins. I would point out that all these visions (whether paladin visions or the more recent moon mage one) have more details to them than just good paladins vs evil paladins. I think a lot of people are seeing only half the picture, and perhaps only the lesser half at that.

Dart, In addition to all that has happened in game, I can honestly say that one thing that has me so interested to see the outcome of this is the obvious time, thought and effort that's been put in to it. All the teasers and clues you put out there really show an interest on your part. Thanks for what you've done so far.

Anyone consider that the visored dude who killed Ezruh was the person who Ezruh was going to tell the Hounds about (or someone working for that person)?

At which point he is killed, to keep him from talking.

And then, the armored dude (who isn't a Hound) says the heretic he was meant to find was Ezruh, so at least he did what he wanted to do.

ditto, definitely a cool plot- I really hope Beren doesn't sit this one out- imo that was the most awesome facet from the details when this event began. :)

"[Totalization is] based on the simple yet so fateful proposition that nothing is more unbearable than the vague tension of guiltiness. For this reason, then, some individuals sometimes try to overcome all moral vagueness by becoming totally good or totally bad-- solutions which betray their ambivalent nature in that the totally "good" may learn to become torturers ad majorem Dei gloriam, while the totally "bad" may develop decided loyalties to leaders and cliques."

Just want to echo my thanks to all the hands involved with all of this stuff. At the very least it's a great read and total lore candy for me even though I haven't been involved IG.

Believe it or not, he's made his official appearance. The question is...when and where?
