Hey all
I'm a 16th circle Paladin right now wearing a fluted suit of armor, dwarven great helm, and bronze gauntlets. I'd like to move up to some nice Relayer forged stuff. My question is do you think I should save up for the field plate (50pk) or get the gauntlets and helm (10pk apiece) first since obviously I will get that kind of money sooner. Right now I have about 12 plat at my disposal...
Thanks
Deputy Namrai

Actually, depending on race, what you might want to do is see if there are any second line forgers who are willing to sell cheap or give away an 'imperfect' set of plate. My paladin, a Kaldar, has never bothered getting capped plate, actually. It's almost capped, but it's too heavy. <shrug> Works just fine for him. His helm and gauntlets are Relayer though, and he adores them.
I suppose someday when he hits mid-circles he'll probably get a set of capped Relayer, but that'll be when he's unhindered and unburdened with all his weapons and I think it's like 700 stone field plate where you get the next step up in protection.
The trick is that when you can do sandies without sweating, cash stops really being an issue, at least for things like armor. The real question is do you have the patience to just keep slogging along and hunting conservatively until then?
Oh yeah, and he wears a swain chain shirt and Crossing scale greaves to work chain. <g> Doesn't get much cheaper than that until you hit free. Remember, there are all kinds of characters who never go to forged for anything and still get by just fine ... look at TF.

First thing you should do is replace that fluted suit of armor with some Theren plate. That'll save you 200 stones and up your protection/construction.
As for forged stuff, my Paladin does just fine at ~30th circle with storebought plate armor. I expect eventually I'll see a difference, but haven't seen much of one yet using borrowed capped plate. At those levels, I'd only recommend it if you have the coin to spend and want the lightest thing available.

For 6 platinum kronars, I'm more than willing to forge a suit of near-capped plate armor at 590 stones.
Hell, I'll even throw in the accessories for free, since I'm feeling generous. I need to stay away from red wine.
