okay, it just seems to me that new horses (or just less combat savvy horses) will try to keep attacking without stop get very fatigued, resulting in their attack messaging be that of the poor variety. It seems to me they become much more proficient much more quickly if you occasionally signal to them to retreat, which will just make em hangback for a few before attacking again.

Actually the factor is their poor recovery of balance. And severe degradation of it in combat.

There is a technique that you can use to get your horse advancing on its own and showing up with the Assesss command. You can clearly see the lack of balance horses have with this.

This has been an ongoing problem, that has recently (about 3-4 months ago) become a severe problem.

And yes signaling them to retreat does help this. Gives them a chance to regain balance.

I know leading the horse prevents it from attacking. It should attack in either mode (whether it shows in assess or not) when you are mounted.

One thing that will prevent the horse from attacking if you are mounted is if you face another creature. When you are mounted the horse will not face to match you and hence can not attack. Since it seems to only be able to attack a foe you are facing.

If that was not your case, then I do not know what is going on.
