Hi all,
I have had my horse for a very long time, and at a guess I would say I spent 6 to 9 months trying to get a bond, most of that time I was not getting very far then I got some helpful advice about getting the horse to show up in combat, and wham in no time at all I was gaining bond after bond. For the last 3 or more years I seem to only take her out for jousting.
So I got her out for a joust event today, then thought I would try some combat with her again since the last time was such a shambles. Oh no what a bad idea I think to myself 6 hours later.
PLEASE can someone tell me how the horse is supposed to act now and if I AM gaining any bond with her. ( I thought I had them all was sure I had signal horse to advance, but it appears I only have retreat and charge.)
CONFUSED
I use to see her in combat when dismounted and she would fight at my side, I believe this was the way to tell if your horse was learning and you were gaining any bond with the horse. Now she wont fight unless I am mounted (this is now back to front, use to fight when dismounted not mounted)and wont show up in combat.
She use to kill pecs and now can hardly hit them unless they are stunned yet blows Bloods wolves away.
Am I doing any good? and since I dont seem to have Signal horse to advance anymore I am trying to get it, but am I actually doing any good, am I wasting my time as I cant get her to show up in combat.
PLEASE MISTER GM types let me know if I am wasting my time, I did an ASSIST in game waited for nearly 4 hours with the horse but no one showed, (I did not think anyone would as I guess no one wants to come within 100 miles of this) SO please tell me if I am wasting my time and I can move on.
Thanks
Wodie

This is the sort of nonsense I am now seeing in combat with my horse, check this out while mounted I retreat then "Signal horse to charge" then assess the combat to see that I am missile yet the horse which I am on charged the wolf and is hitting.
You retreat from combat.
>signal horse charge wol
A gold-colored horse charges at a blood wolf. The horse lands a heavy strike to its left arm as it falters slightly!
>ass
You assess your combat situation...
You (solidly balanced) are facing a blood wolf (1) at melee range.
A blood wolf (1: slightly off balance) is facing you at missile range.
See the horse which I am mounted on is not showing in combat but is fighting the wolf even though it shows I am missile. (if I am mounted and at missile then surely the horse is too or we both are at melee?)
There seems to be so much wrong with horses right now, (they seem to have gotten worse) that I feel I am wasting my time.
OH think I figured out why the horse cant take down pecs no more, because of some of the other combat changes that have happend in the last 3 years
Thanks

Wodie,
Your problems with the horse not attacking unless you are mounted and not having all the signal choices even though you have the bond have been found, reported, and looked into within the last year or so. As best I can determine from talking to folks, it is believed that changes to the combat system over the last year or so have caused these changes in how the horse combat reacts to the overall combat changes.
Rather than try the "single gm fix" of the entire horse system that has NOT worked over the last few years, they mentioned there would be a TEAM of GM's to re-write the entire "helpful critters" system to include horses, companions, familiars, etc. For that reason, the likelyhood of a fix to your problem before the core system is re-written is slim. I won't say non-existant because GM Nehros did say he would look into the Horse code as it affected paladins and possibly specifically paladin horse combat part. He didn't say he could guarantee he could come up with a fix, just that he was willing to look into it from a limited viewpoint (that of paladin combat).
So, there are known problems with horses fighting critters. GM Nehros will be taking a look at the code as it relates to that. In any event, the entire system will be undergoing a complete CORE rewrite to make all helpful critters more consistant and easier to code for.
Possibly not the answer you wanted. But that is the best answer I have from all the talking about it I did at Simucon.

It won't. The new design movement is to make everything fair for all, regardless of classes, skillsets, original design, common sense or logic. See: TM, mech split, EXP fixes, Stat fixes. Its a skill based game, so it will require some skill.
Just saying the trend is more than apparent.

No where in all the discussions was the concept of a fully armored warrior on horseback not being deadly discussed or refuted. Its just that right now, the system is such a hodgepodge of code that making it happen is almost impossible. Thus the re-write. At the end of the re-write, THEN we can see if such a bonus to combat is possible or not. I won't say it will or won't until we get closer to the "core system" rewrite.
But generally, during the discussion, the topic of "a warrior on horseback being more effective" did get head nods. No guarantees, just that the concept IS there in the GM's heads. All we have to do is see if its possible to be executed in the new code.

Thanks Rearch!
So taking my horse into combat now is a waste of time, this is good to know thanks.
I do look forward to horses getting redone, and hope all guilds have horse combat, with paladins getting something a bit extra due to their bond.
-perhaps other guilds have a chance to fall from the horse in combat, so yes they can fight from horse back but dont have the control over the horse
-perhaps Animal lore plays a bigger part in control of beast of burden and we learn Animal lore from doing things with the horse.
Thanks again

Shame horses are not workin at the moment as I thought it would have been a good idea to train with horse and learn some TM backtraining at the same time, since they both would be below hunting at level.
As for back training TM, how many of you know how hard it is to back train a weapon and that is not even a tert skill!!!
YEahhahaha for those that are keen to be back training TM this is sure gonna be a exercise in Discipline!

I've been working on some of the weapon/weaponmaster titles of late, and have had my eyes on the 151 and 251 titles. The difference is that its difficult to keep all the crappy weapons locked or at higher mindstates where TM is a joke to keep constantly locked. Slings, for example just don't do enough damage consistantly to move fast. It's easier to work on weapons in smaller sets and go 10 ranks, then switch sets.
I think the tert skill is easier because your TM can be matched against x creature to provide better damage and you'll spend less time maintaining a higher mindstate.
>YEahhahaha for those that are keen to be back training TM this is sure gonna be a exercise in Discipline!
I picked up 18 ranks in 2 days. It surely won't be that good for long, and when the spell go off preview in 5 1/2 months I'll be screwed without a spell slot I'll have to decide whether or not I want to circle to continue. I have one slot open, but was saving it for RE. Discipline ain't the word, brother. More like insanity.

Horses are now even more broken than before due to the combat changes, but we have been promised that a new system of companions will be coded, probably taking a few years to accomplish. Meanwhile, combat with our horses does not work. I can do the advance horse and get it to show up in my assess, but the first critter I advance on horseback, the assess disappears and my horse is back to only fighting while I'm mounted (and not that well). And he never shows back up in my combat assess again unless I re-engage him. I'm sure there is no bonding going on at the moment with this. I still love bringing my horse to as many places as I can and hunting with him, but I know he's broken and it makes me very sad.

Aye Airoza it makes me sad too! as well as frustrated when I see all these other devlopments going on.
I hope that horses become more of a global item and all players can have a horse that fights in combat, if this happens then there might be more done with horses from those with the power to code for it will not be just something for paladins they will be doing something for the game as a whole.
