I've been a very big Reagan fan for many years. My parents, were both huge Reagan fans, my father being a Republican, my mother a registered Democrat. In fact it was Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign that turned my mom from a-dyed-in-the-wool dem to a less partisan moderate.
Say whatever you want about his politics, the man was an icon. He was loved by his allies and friends, and respected by his opponents. Jimmy Carter, admitted yesterday that Reagan was deserving of the monikor "Great Communicater". And politicians and congresspeople, both Democrat and Republican, have now publically touted his service and strength.
Even more telling is the admission by the Democrat leadership, that Ron's tough stance on foreign affairs did indeed win the Cold War by crippling and outpacing the Soviet economy. Gorbachev, admitted in a recent interview that the STAR WARS defense Initiative, was directly responsible for the collapse of the former Soviet Union, because the USSR went bankrupt trying to keep up with US technology.
Margret Thatcher reffered to Ron, as the "last great lion of the 20th century". Placing him on par with FDR, JFK, and Churchill.
His amazing and oft times dazzling speeches come readily to mind. The famous "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech, and the infmous "I'm paying for this microphone" debate. Anyone remember when his age became a factor in the 84 debate with Mondale, how he retorted "I'm not going to make an issue out of my opponents youth and lack of experience". Mondale was well into his 50's.
The man was trully a great American, and a huge success story. I recommend people read up on his life and his rise to White House.
