I have considerable doubts about the truth around that 'documentary.' Yes, fast food is not terribly healthy. However, from what I have heard, this fellow also did not exercise or do anything else required for a healthy diet. Stuffing yourself full of anything over a period of time will hurt you, even if its normally healthy. Ever hear of water poisoning? Or you could just be malnourished if you ate nothing but tofu. I have the suspicion its all about shock value and not about a real message.
Re: And yet more movies on 06/16/2004 10:03 AM CDT
his docu is pretty good actually. Very good article in a NYT Sunday Magazine, as well as various reputable web articles. He had liver damage from eating it, and gained 30 pounds very quickly like 3 weeks. However, he did eat it 3-4 times a day. The funniest was that Mcdonalds HAD to have no comment. They didnt wanna say, eating only one brand or type of food is unhealthy and shouldnt be done, and yet did not originally write a statement denying any correlation.
I hate fast food in general, i believe it taste like crap, not only does it lack nutritional value but its just doesnt make me feel good. And it doesnt have the good side affect of making me giggly and drunk ( i <3 alcohol but alas giving you up too mostly...).

Actually this is an excellent documentary on what a "fast-food lifestyle" is doing to the general American public. This documentary was aimed at showing the "average" American what happens when you follow such a lifestyle. First, before you go bashing the movie for the above issues you might want to do a little background research on exactly what he did/was done. Prior to this pseudo-experiment the film maker was in good shape. He had a low BMI, worked out, and no medical conditions. During the movie he quit working out, yet still engaged in the amount of activity that the "average" office worker does in a day (approximately 2 miles of walking per day. Second, as far as the diet itself goes, he ate 3 meals a day, based on what MacDonalds touts as an average meal. In a few weeks he put on 30 lbs, and became a walking healh-condition.
While it is true that overendulging in anything can lead to problems, it is also not the case that 60% of Americans are malnourished because they only eat tofu, or suffer from water "poisoning". What is the case is that 60% of adult Americans are now overweight or obese, and 20 to 25% of adolescents are as well. What is the case is that by adopting the lifestyle of our Fast-Food Nation (great book I highly reccomend it to anyone), Americans are becoming fatter and unhealthier than any other culture in the world. Its not due to to much water or tofu consumption. It is due, in part, to overconsumption of high-calorie, low-quality, high-fat foods and a sedentary lifestyle. Thats not to say that augmenting your normal diet with fastfood is bad. The point of the documentary was that we cannot rely on it, and need to improve our overall activity level.
What I find interesting is that the day before the movie was released MacDonalds pulled its "Supersize" option from the menu =O Of course spokespeople for MacD's says the two are not related.

This film is not an indictment of fast food at all, its an indictment of the kind of people that eat it. The whole thing is pure comedy. Anyone who does not feel ashamed going through a drive through window to be fed deserves obesity. I saw this movie and it did not make me blame McDonald's it made me blame commonness. I found the movie amusing even though Spurlock is not really an engaging personality. This is not a movie that is high in cinematic quality, but it does have enough gross out factor to entertain people.

Fast food nation scared me, then again friends that used to work at the fast food places scare me about the place. Playing floor hockey with patties then heating them up for sale.

Had a McDonald's employee ever told someone "We're sorry, but you're too fat to eat here. Why don't you try something healthier and maybe work out a bit?" the public would have gone even more ballistic.
Ah, America. The only country in which individuals will pay millions of dollars to see a movie that is about the other people they paid millions of dollars to.

While I can find Michael Moore to be very whiny time to time, at least he tells me NEW information (even though it's spun at times).
I'm not sure what Supersize Me is supposed to exactly point out.
"Eating fast food constantly for a month makes you fat"
...duh?
Go see Stepford Wives instead. Now that's comedy.

It's pointing out that McDonald's represented themselves poorly at some point. The guy did the experiment because McDonald's stated that there was nothing wrong with their menu selection and that an individual could eat their food for every meal and still be in good health. I forget the exact quote - but in an article the guy wrote explaining why he did it - a McDonald's spokesperson said something to that effect - and he merely proved him wrong.
