I like the idea you put in place for shunned/heretic paldins to still be able to make use of this spell... This idea could be applied across the board for all our spells... so then at least we could still cast our magics when dark souled.

It could. It's there as an experiment to see if this is a meaningful and acceptable way to handle the soul state and non-Paladin restrictions without radically redefining the feature. Whether it'll be expanded upon will depend on its reception and our own observations.

Very cool, thanks for the release.

>>Yeah Soldier's Prayer is now much more effective... helps against sky giants quite a bit.
In case people get the wrong idea:
The actual effectiveness of Soldier's Prayer did not change, defined by "the amount of spell power the barrier removes from the offending spell." You can get a bit more power out of it, but I don't think that bug fix would've made a human-perceivable difference.
Instead all the improvements went toward making the modest defense the spell provides more accessible and convenient to use, providing a basic "Paladin MR" spell that can be used as a platform later on for specialized or high-end barriers.

It's crazy to me how many defensive spells we have as a magic tert guild.
I guess we got to this point as a result of armor not really doing what it needed to do when contesting weapons over all these years. Dunno.
Once you get all the spells, it's kind of overwhelming to buff up. I think it would be cool to move more toward soul pool type abilities that use our special paladin inner fire :)
I dig our magic- I just hope with this new combat/armor system that something like this would be feasible, even if it meant less individual spells since we wouldn't "need" them as much with the new, better working, armor skillset.
Sorry if this is off-tangent. I'm really happy with the way the guild is progressing overall, and SOP is excellent (especially the new messaging/soul requirement relaxation).
Thanks for the hard work.

I agree that its a lot of prep work (and power percieving to find enough mana) to cast all our spells at high duration without spreading apart casts over a period of time.
Cleric's have a nifty spell that works in combination with another spell to enable them to "store" multiple prepared casts of spells. I've often heard requests from Paladins for something with simular effect.
I suggest an ability that works a little differently... The glyph of Haste. Haste would allow our spells to become fully prepared at a much higher rate... allowing for quick casting of multiple spells. All abilities require balance and considerations of fairness... so I suggest the glyph only work with spells that are tagged "non-aggressive" with potential backlashes for casting aggressive natured ones. Backfires could be more painful as well... so one would be wise to not push their limits too much. Also the ability would be limited by mana reserves, because quick high prep casting would drain a lot of mana without the downtime of waiting for full preps between casts to recover some loss attunement.

Just a quick question. I see you did a lot of work to make Soldier's Prayer consistent for non-paladins as well as heretical paladins. However, how can non-paladins ever cast the spell? I've never seen it on any scroll or device.
Also, SOP is Sphere of Protection. In using abbreviations, I always go with what the game uses.

I'm not really sure what you did behind the scenes, and I don't think the spell makes me "immune" to magic by any means. It just seemed like before whenever I used the spell that when sombody would cast at me with the spell up it would tear through it after one shot, leaving me open for the next cast so I never really bothered to put it up. Now, it seems I'm getting more use out of it. Either way, again I like it.

<<The actual effectiveness of Soldier's Prayer did not change
Tested it last night. Thanks for the changes (especially duration), but the spell still lives up to its name (a prayer). Maybe it will be a platform from which better spells can come forth.
Regardless, nice change on the duration. In light of how weak the spell is, any chance we can push the top-end duration up even more?
Madigan
As true as this is, I've always held Elanthia's ultimate end will shortly follow after either an "Oops." or a "Hey, that's neat." from within a Moon Mage guild.

It really wasn't much work, since non-paladins and heretical paladins literally share the same "path" through the spell.
"Are you a Paladin with enough soul? Okay, then do A. Otherwise, I don't care what you are and do B."
The only exception to this is that Clerics get different messaging, reflecting their own understanding of what's going on (this doesn't net them a mechanical benefit, though).
Currently SP can't be used outside Paladins, but I consider it part of our SOP to make sure spells can support wide use (cross-guild, creature, etc.) even if we have no immediate plans to use it. Would rather take five minutes now making sure NPCs can cast SP than come back to the spell two years from now when someone wants to build a creature that uses it.
>>Thanks for the changes (especially duration), but the spell still lives up to its name (a prayer). Maybe it will be a platform from which better spells can come forth.
When we were batting SP changes back and forth, two general options presented themselves.
The first and most intuitive way to make SP Not Suck was to boost its power. Give it greater stopping power, let it completely shut down spells. The problem came when we put the consequence of that decision up for review: high-powered barriers are meant to be very specialized (Soul Shield, Psychic Shield) or hinder the defender's own supernatural abilities (Worm's Mist, Khri Serenity).
In the current situation, it did not seem wise to add such a restriction to Soldier's Prayer, even if it was a necessary component in making Soldier's Prayer a much stronger spell. So, we went the opposite direction: Soldier's Prayer is already a middling spell with effectively no restrictions on use, but it was a pain in the ass to use. We embraced that as its design and conceived of it as a baseline "Paladin MR" defense that could lead to high-end, quirky spells in the future, which would be made out of whole-cloth and (hopefully) immune to the criticisms that would have plagued SP if we had used it instead.

I found soldiers prayer quite useful myself... I managed to face off against 2 warmages both with more targeted then I have evasion and took 5 lightning bolts and then a fireball and only ended up with 4 bleeders(and 2 pieces of damaged armor)... I call that successful in my book... if I had been fighting and not just standing there taking shots... I would of had plenty of oportunity to stun foe and take them both down... Taking what would have been a critical strike against us and negating it to a bleeding wound is often all a Paladin needs to ensure Justice still happens.
I recomend anti stun in combonation with Soldier's prayer if you guys spar against targeted users...

The non-Holy messaging is exactly the same thing as a Paladin who doesn't make the soul threshold gets.
Clerics:
>cast

The spell pattern weaves a simple barrier out of invisible strands of Holy energy. Oddly, the pattern then attempts to access your soul in some entirely unproductive fashion.
