I heard the hinderance penalty for using a shield in combat is not based on shield ranks but on the ranks in whatever armor you have on your chest. Is this true? When can I expect to see the hinderance go down to a minimum?

No, you work down your shield hinderance with your shield ranks.

It is based on body armor apparently. See Combat - General discussion starting at post 5058 I thought it was bug at first. Would be interested in any other tests.

hrm.. far as I know you can't train down shield hinderance, you only train down your armor to where the hinderance from the shield doesn't really matter to you course I haven't used a shield in about two years and it could have changed but I haven't seen anything on that. I've never seen any word for Paladins or any guild on ability to train shield hinderance down like you can other armor skills. Was a good arguement about this at the center of "reasons to have DA work on your shield as well" which we complained about since DA came out.

on the bright side, I'm extremely glad DA works for it now. Great spell

A minor gripe is that DA doesn't work when you're holding the shield... kind of annoying to retreat, wear the shield, cast, and re-engage... but I'm happy with DA how it is and it's my favorite spell so far.
