Over in the Bard Guild folder we're having a discussion of the top survivals for our members. I was curious how Paladins, as a survival tert that can't use the stealthy survival skills to circle, compare. What are the top survivals for Paladins? For comparison, this is the ranking I've collected for Bards so far:
Evasion
Perception
Skinning
Stalking
Hiding
Swimming, Climbing (Tie)
Foraging
Lockpicking
Disarm, First Aid, Escaping
I am curious to see if the list is similar, just without the stealthy skills, or if the Paladin Guild charts a different pathway. Thanks for your help!

Top 10 with the percentage of my total survival ranks each represents. No surprises here for me.
Evasion 17%
Perception 16
Skinning 14%
Foraging 14%
First Aid 10%
Stalking 7%
Climbing 4%
Swimming 4%
Disarm Traps 3%
Lockpicking 3%
I do think you'll be surprised how many actively train hiding, though.

So far the overall rankings look like this for the top ten:
Evasion
Perception
Skinning
Foraging
Stalking
First Aid
Climbing
Swimming
Lockpicking
Disarm
Evasion and Perception were in the top two for everyone, a pattern I also saw in the Bard Guild. I'd expect this to be true for most Guilds. Skinning was also high, which makes a lot of sense for training through combat.
Lockpicking and Disarm were low, which seems to be a pattern. I think the payoff for boxes is low enough that unless you have to train it, or choose to force yourself to train it, it makes more sense to ignore it.
What I found interesting was how high Foraging and First Aid were compared to ranking very low for the Bard Guild. Curious if anyone has some ideas on why they are more popular for you all.
A number train Hiding, but it on average didn't make it into the top ten for most people. I'm curious if most are training Stalking as a side effect of Hunt?
Also, last I checked Stalking wasn't allowed for circle requirements for Paladins. Has that changed?

Depends on if you want to take a look from a newer or older systems view. In the newer view, foraging is high because COLLECT is the best way to get perception.
First aid, in an older systems view, was somewhat required. Many years ago, you didn't learn armor skill unless you got tagged in combat, which lead to quite a few bleeders. I suspect a lot of FA also comes from the ability to read compendiums in combat. Since we generally sit around training most or all types of armor, we have lots of spare time while just staring at things.

That's absolutely why foraging is up there for me. Same with stalking. I don't train it because I want it, it's just a side effect of using HUNT to train perception.
As for FA, to me it's just the most useful of the remaining survival skills and the least tedious to train.

This is very interesting and helpful for understanding some of the differences. I just use Hunt in combat, which is why my Perception and Stalk are high, but I don't feel like I need to work on Perception enough to have Foraging as a side effect.
I've suggested on a few folders that after the merger Hunt should train Outdoorsmanship instead of the new Stealth skill. That's why I asked if Paladins can use Hiding for their circle requirements. If they can't use the Stealth skill for circling it seems like they've lost a good way to train multiple survivals.

Re: Top Survivals on 02/19/2011 11:24 AM CST
Our survival requirements, as they stand now, aren't really high enough to be worried about the bottom bunch of skills. I honestly don't know what we can or can't use toward our reqs, other than stealing. I don't think those who train hiding do so because they are using it to circle. They do it because, also as it stands now, stealth is the best defense in the game. They are willing to work to take advantage of that.
