Not that it'll happen, and I know it's been brought up before:
I wish when I fall in combat that my wolf could either drag me out (not likely), or be able to howl for assistance. Something another Ranger would be able to hear and understand "oh, Lucerella died in Leucros". I figure, Bards have that song they sing for something similar, why not something for Rangers as well.
Ah well, here's to dreamin'.

I would love it if our companions could help us when dead. Or for wolves to drag us out if they are mature.
Raccoons could chitter for help. ::You sense a raccoon's distress. Concentrating hard, you sense Zinaca has died (yet again) in mountain giants.
Would really really love this. And yes, since bards can sense their guilds fallen, there is precedence. And we rangers do tend to die in odd places.

PS - Did you guys all see the video of the dog dragging the poor pup that got hit by a car on the highway? Its incredibly sad but the kind of thing I see a rangerly companion doing.

I don't know how viable this is, but I can see this happening:
XXX was just struck down!
XXX's <companion> starts <chittering/howling> in distress.
Other creatures in the area hear the distressed cries and take them up themselves, until to the ears of a ranger it seems the entire land is howling!
The cries seem to be strongest to the <direction>.
Sometimes the key to happiness is not assuming it is locked in the first place- Ziggy
A journey of a thousand SMILES begins with a single step- Ziggy

<<Rest assured that we are keeping track of all these great ideas!>>
Audica, thanks so much! We've waited on this for like, well you know. For some of us, having companions was a big part of being a ranger.
Also, would love to see some random actions included in the wolves code. Once I was hunting in gargs and after I killed a snowbeast, my young wolf picked it up and started shaking it and growling. I loved it! Just the sort of thing a pack would teach the young to do! Thanks whoever that GM was.
Zinaca---and Lucky howls a yippee howl!

>Call me cranky, but I'd just a soon forget anything fancy with companions until they were coded properly to well, you know...function.
THIS.
My wish list for companions:
* Rewrite core scripts to fix issues and allow expansion. We should not be at risk of losing a companion from room mechanics or missing a single message.
* Restore-able if lost due to bug or system problem, at least to the previous age category.
* Expanded messaging with day/night, seasonal, and weather awareness when appropriate.
* More enjoyment, less work for the baseline companion. Right now they seem more like a chore and less an animal friend. Companions should be easier to keep, easier to feed, easier to send off on their own. Small companions should be able to be carried on your shoulder or whatever to make up for their more limited capabilities.
* More utility. Have this be like horses except based on animal lore. Someone who has their first raccoon might have a lovable ball of fur, but when they have 50 or 100 ranks of animal lore, they should be able to teach it more tricks and capabilities so someone actually has an incentive to have an "easier" companion even if they are able to take a "harder" one. We should be able to have them interact with other characters, such as other rangers or your spouse if we so desire. Maybe base this on some combination of our friends list, marital status, and guild affiliation.
* More variety. Have default personalities for each type of critter and then have variations we can choose like demeanor settings for characters. Someone might want a snuggly-wuggly wolf, while someone else might want a mean junk-yard dog. There should be a random chance, driven by the amount of animal lore that someone has, however, that the companion will revert to the default demeanor on occasion.
* More companion types. Some off the top of my head: ferret, goose, iguana, python, owl, hawk, jungle cat, mountain lion, bear, eagle, wolverine, lion.
* Ability to have two companions if you have sufficient animal lore and circles. Animal lore requirement should be based on compatibility of animal type and difficulty of animal.

Oh, and I forgot...
* More utility when hunting. Like horses, we should be able to train them to work in combat. At the very least they can add some MO penalty to the critter and for larger, more dangerous companions we should be able to actually have them fight with us.
* If we die with the companion out and we have treated them well and trained them well, the "timer" should be disabled and the companion should go into loyalty, guard our corpse mode. Carry/drag our dropped weapon, follow us to the altar when we depart, be able track them to our grave site like we can track them to another character.

Love your ideas, Pete. I have longed for a baby pouch to wear to carry my baby wolf in or just the ablility to put it in my rucksack.
Would love a selction of training toys like rope bones for wolves and acorns to help train the coon.
Another suggestion, Audica (who you are fast becoming my second best loved GM, after Zeryurn with Dartenian being 3rd) Please let the raccoons eat more than corn and wolves more meat choices. Please! I don't wanna lose my life trying to carve an ape for my young/mature wolf. : P
So glad you folks are keeping track of things. I know this is WAY down the road. Probably will have to wait longer than folks have had to wait for the Necro guild to get them. Hope I'm still around to see it when companions become better companions.
Zinaca and her ever-baby wolf, Lucky (who yaps a greeting by the way)
