I have the sorry task of announcing that Lucky 11 died today. ::sniffles:: A few days ago he ate some bad mushrooms and while I only had some bitter herbs with me, I gave those to him to help. Later, when we got near a town, I got some charcoal and made an infusion for him to swallow. I met the renowned empath, Kythryn who said she didn't think I could do much more and that perhaps he will sleep it off as wild things are usually more resilient.

Sadly, although he was making progress yesterday, he died during the night.

I know I only had him a few weeks but I miss him. I will wait on getting a new pup.

They should revoke your companion license.

Actually, I'm continually surprised by the packs willingness to give us their pups. Folks like me that lose them a lot should actually be ripped apart by the whole pack for even trying to get a Lucky 100th or something.

Actually, that's not a bad idea--make the packs/coons reluctant to give us their own the more losses we have. Can we see this in the companion rewrite if it doesn't swept away by the upcoming changes?

Assuming that companions aren't buggy as hell and likely to disappear at the whim of a laggy internet connection? Sure... But, it should not have anything to do with the number of previous companions you had before the rewrite.

frankly, I'd rather see them just turn companion loss off for now until it can be redone. That would make the current system bearable until a new one is in place.

I've never had a companion, and will not get one until they change the loss issue, or we get a companion rewrite.

I don't really mind the losses and it's very much a part of the way I play my ranger. Zinaca is her wolf's pack and he/she is hers. Part, a big part, of my decision to play a ranger was because of companions. So broken or not, I will continue to get them.

i honestly have no clue how you lose so many wolves. you don't even have to technically feed them, i feel so bad for you i'm almost tempted to try to find you IG and explain what i mean.

not to rub it in or anything; but seriously if i ever see you we'll talk it out.

I don't think it's so much negligence as it is just the sheer number of systems and locations that aren't very companion-friendly. There's tracking, trailmarkers, boats, ferries, some portal rooms, Aesry stairs, some guildhalls... and that's just to name a small few. The degree of how 'fragile' companions are as far as being lost from bugs has gotten worse over the years. Young and older companions seem to have a little more tolerance with this, but for baby ones it's practically unsafe to go outside without risking losing them.

Until the system is rewritten they should just go into the script for companions and change the "goto" for loss to the "goto" for them going off to hunt/forage.

Oh you sweetie! Really I'm ok with the losses. In game I get all choked up because of course I love them and miss them etc. And, like I said, it's a big part of my characters life, having companions.

As for how I lose them. Well usually I lose them when I am hunting with them by my side and I die and can't get raised, or depart and get back to the wolf, before they pace or whimper and well...

Another way I lose them, especially lately is using the HUNT verb and following a critter using the HUNT 1 or whatever to place where wolves can't go, like the stream in gryphons (Shard). I get caught up killing the critter and not realizing where I am and well the little one gets bored sitting on the bank, which I can't see, and runs away or is eaten by the gryphons.

Now that dying has changed so much, I rarely wait for a raise and just depart and run like hell back to where I was. I still lose wolves this way though.

Anyway, gonna get a new wolf again! Make way for Lucky 12th!

I'd like to know how you get away with not feeding them. Sending a wolf away to hunt? It comes back hungry, regardless. Don't feed it? It runs off.

Please, do explain.

I DON'T get away with not feeding it. Either it gets hungry and I don't feed it (not in the same room with them and don't see them whimper) or it gets anxious and paces and I don't pet it (again not in the same room and don't see them pace). That's usually were I lose them since I have highlighted pace paces whimper and whimpers so I can easily see when to feed or pet them.

Yes we can send young or older wolves to hunt but when we whistle for them, they still are hungry. You can send baby wolves to sleep to avoid petting or feeding it.

Perhaps I misunderstood your question but I have answered as best I can.

Maybe Lucky #12's name should be 'Chance', or 'Seeya' or something...

it comes back hungry but never advances to the next stage of actual 'gonna leave you now' hungry.

aka. A wolf whimpers means its hungry, a wolf whimpers LOUDLY means its going to run off. sending it off resets it to just a regular whimper, thus never hungry enough to leave?

so like i said, you don't even have to feed it.

Heh, Chance is taken as I know a ranger whose companion is named Chance. Seeya is a possibility as is Solong.

I'll consider changing the name--but I have to admit, keeping the name Lucky is easy and since I've done for so long, easy to remember.

Oooooh! NOW I get it! I'm not the brightest leaf on the tree. Heh, I never thought of that, since my goal is to do as much as possible with my wolf with me.

you DO realize the whole 'summon and dismiss and summon and dismiss' to bypass the feeding mechanics is bug abuse, right?

Given the state of companions, I'd really hope that the GMs would look the other way on anything that made them more playable until something can be done with the system as a whole.

There's still far too many bugs and ways for you to lose companions doing nothing wrong for me to get upset that someone found a way to manipulate the system to make it slightly less painful to use the system.

Especially since there is almost no IG benefit to having one.

Either make them RP fluff and get rid of the completely unreasonable time investment or give them real, tangible benefits for the time investment.

Its because Zinaca RPs with her wolf as opposed to all the rest of us who have gotten so fed up and just use it for delivery tasks, tracking, or AL.
