RPing a Guild Leader on 07/10/2002 01:24 PM CDT
Alright, as a continuation of what has been going on over in the Complaints folder.
If up until this point you didn't know I chose to RP being a Guild Leader, then it obviously hasn't affected you in any way. I get a number of people that take part and RP it with me, and have a good time with it. It's what I have chosen to do, and will continue to do. I never demanded respect from anyone because I RP a Guild Leader nor did I demand that everyone agree with me on it. It's just what I have chosen to do, and has made playing a lot more fun than just circling and chatting. I also do not RP as being the same as the other Guild Leaders, else I would just sit on my duff inside and wait for people to ask me if they can circle. What I RP is that I'm a walking talking Guild Leader, who is available to answer questions, give advice and just overall be real.
Why not RP it? People make their own governments for cities all the time, but were they actually appointed by an NPC or a GM to do so? The majority of the time, no. What makes roleplaying roleplaying is that you can think of some plot and stick to it, no matter how off the wall it may be. If someone wants to RP having a pink bunny as their god, if they stick to their guns and do it all the time, and don't break character, then more power to them. Just because you don't like what I'm doing, doesn't mean it's wrong.
Again, I've never demanded that anyone go along with it. But if someone asks me IG about it, I answer as if I am. I do not break character, and will stick by my chosen RP.

<<And what will you do, when people refute you in game?>>
I have had this happen many times. I just smile at them, and say that each is entitled to what they want to believe, and go back about my business. I never try to force it upon them, for that would then be infringing on what THEY want to RP.

Because I RP that one night she did. There are also many books IG that recall stories that never really happened, yet we believe them. It's for the sake of a fun RP. It's not fun to only believe everything you personally, first hand witness as happeneing...well...at least not for me.

This would be a current event. Not a history book event. Kalika wouldn't just step down and appoint you, especially if Paglar appearing all over the place. He kicked Tomma out of the city of Shard, you think he would let Kalika just appoint you?

Nope, not wrong at all, and I applaud your conviction (the same as those who believe they are druids, or captain of a ship :). Have your ideals and stick to them.
I think its more of a case of a shared delusion (maybe too strong a word); those who believe that you're a Guild Leader (as opposed to a guild leader or leader in the guild).

Oh, I apologize, let me be more specific. I do not RP that she just out of the blue steeped down and appointed me a full Guild Leader. I RP that she came out and we made a bet based on her bowing skill. She lost the bet and gave me "guild leader status." I have never taken this to mean Full Guild Leader, merely, guild leader status. That is why I have my lockpick labeled GuildLeader. I am called one, by quite a number of people, but I do not have the abilities to advance people in circles or formally join them to the guild.

You mean to tell me you bested Kalika in a comp based on bow skill? If you say so....
I see Guild Leader the same as guild leader. I'm not sure what status you are referring to. If you go around calling yourself a guild leader you are telling people you are up there with Kalika and the rest. But whatever floats your boat.

The bet was that she couldn't hit me with her ash longbow that she had just created. I told her that she hasn't been out in the fields in A LONG time, and that perhaps her hands weren't all that she had remembered. She missed, and in turn accidently hit someone who was zombying in front of the Guild and killed them. That's why if you ask Kalika about me, or the girl that she killed (Esmeldda) she merely says, "Huh?" She's a little embaressed by it all, really.

Re: RPing a Guild Leader on 07/10/2002 02:31 PM CDT
Alright, been trying to bite my tongue long enough. Give this a break. First off, guess what, it's Role-play. I could role play the wicked witch of Shard if I felt like it and you would just have to deal with it as long as I can play it off as something that happened in game. Oh, and guess what? For lying to everyone years back when the Dark Elves were around, I was asked to take part in an actual GM event because I role-played my part well and played out that something that happened with the Prince and myself a few years prior to it (even though it actually didn't happen). If you want to call it lying, go right ahead, but unless you can PROOVE any of ANYONE'S role-play. Every word of it is lying until it actually happened. Guess what, role-playing is a LIE. It's not real. DR is not real. It's all in what you WANT IT TO BE. This is a game that is sculpted mainly by GM's but can be just as affected by each player. I play this game to get away from reality. I made Willican during beta years but I re-rolled. Does that mean because I re-rolled I haven't played as many years and don't deserve to role-play anyway I feel like? No.
As for Fene, I'm far from going to attack you but just because someone doesn't play as often and isn't as high up in level does not mean they put any less time and effort into the guild. Look at Kyss' web page and tell me how much slacking she's done? Heck, if you want to get technical, she's taken time from us outside the game because she got focused on that handbook. She updates it everyday. She spends part of everyday sitting out front of the Crossing ranger guild answering anyone's questions that she can answer. Just because circle wise you're higher, does not by any means, mean she's put any less effort into the guild. There are MANY aspects of it. Besides, other then Sammee coming down and making longbows for anyone that asks him, I'm sorry, but I don't remember the last time one of our "elders" has come down from the islands and decided to put some time and effort into helping the younger rangers. Don't have to be great, but I mean I even make simple messed up things for newbies looking for gear. Making the guild a better one as a whole. If you're going to talk about time and effort, it comes from putting overall effort in the guild as a whole, not just self accomplishment. Now let me add this before I open my mouth too much. Fen, I don't know you very well and I haven't seen you around so I can't speak much for you honestly. I'm around the Crossing guild a lot and to be honest, I thought you quit a while back because I haven't heard nor seen your name in a while. If you have, my apology at this comment, I'm only going by what I see.
I'm not going to get into a huge argument over something that should of been dropped from the start and I'm open to hear opinions. I just wish you all would not worry so much about her playing "A" generic (no city she's associated with) guild leader. I'll even add one more thing. She associates herself with the rangers as a whole. So, how about we let her role-play the way she feels and you role-play the way you feel. If you're disgusted at her for saying Kalika didn't appoint her, prove it. If you don't believe her in game, don't. Just don't try to take away someone elses RP because you don't believe it or like it.

Willican,
He doesn't have to prove his disgust. he doesn't have to prove Kalika "woke up" and had a little bow contest. Anyone who portrays themselves as someone that important in the guild, has some need to feel important.
I agree with my husband. No one should be able to claim that status. That status is earned. It's unfair to new people (novices) who may actually buy into that importance.
I suppose everyone disagreeing with this situation could do their own RP and let the younger rangers know that anyone claiming themselves above others or as a guild leader is all part of the deluded state acheived by many hours of foraging.
Miabelle
P.S. You still act like an elothean.

Well, I have been fascinated with this conversation, and understand both sides of the story well (In my mind anyway).
I for one, being brand new to Elanthia, a circle 3 Ranger, have been super grateful for all the help I have recieved, and amazed at the generosity of many I have encountered through my blunders. Haven't had the chance to talk to you Kyssandra much, though I have seen you around. Now that I know that you are the Guild Mentor/ Leader, I will be pestering you much more often.

Wasn't there someone "just RP'ing" that they were Sorrow's daughter? Not hurting anyone, just "having a little fun" and the GM's stomped all over it and made her re-roll?
I think that sets a precedent ... you do NOT initiate RP that involves established IG characters without GM approval.
Now for a GM to take action and wake up Kalika so next time you claim Kalika appointed you, she can step out of the office and say, "just when did I do that? Go skin something already."

I have pointed it out to her while she was awake. During the event when the magic was taken away, she asked me to lead a group of people to the temple to Pray, and I said I would be happy to aid a fellow Guild Leader, and rubbed my lockpick case that I have labeled as GuildLeader. She smiled, thanked me, and sent me on my way. I also then acted as a kind of messenger and spoke with a number of the other guild Guild Leaders (Trader, Bard and Empath), and in all three cases I rubbed my lockpick when I introduced myself to them. They all smiled at me after I did so.

Done seen Kalika wake up and banish a ranger from the mainland for 6 months. Got the log somewhere.
So, if someone manages to hit Kyssandra with an arrow, does that mean they are Kalika's better, and they can ascend to the job instead?

PS this prolly will be pretty rude ... i dont know you Kyss so dont take it personally
k here we go
RP #1.
Ive decided I will take over the world ...Im the new king and all so start bowing ... its ok i really am the King I rolepayed defeating all the major towns and all that so dont worry its a ligit ... now as the king i expet everyone to pay taxs to me i figure everyone pays a gold day after you hit 30th ...the newbies can live tax free... now im not going to force this on any of you ... OOC becasue im not really the king ... but i would expect you to just do it cause other wise i would have my soldiers and followers arrest you or hang ya ...whatever ... so im probably gana decide I RPed this maybe a month ago so thats 30 gold all you people owe me ...thanks
RP #2
this ones a lil simpler ...i was talkin to Kalika ...she says Kyss is a liar and shes offended by what Kyss is spreading around ... One of our true GuildLeaders ...Kalika wants us all to go lynch mob her ...so get yer torches, sticks , and pitchforks ...I mean our guild leader has spoken ...ya gota listen to her here people go get Kyss ...
anywho these are both pretty dumb RPs just like you saying your our guildleader .... sorry to be so offensive but ... i consider it offensive that you would place yerself higher then us for the sake of RP

Wow, okay. We've brought our overall mentality down to using sarcasm. You want sarcasm, fine. Other then your last paragraph that, sounds like you have a personal issue. If you want to RP the king. Knock yourself out. See who cares? Oh, that's right, Elanthia doesn't have a king now do they? Let's move to scenario number two. A lynch mob, wait, you talked to Kalika? Funny, she didn't talk to anyone else, and when I ask her about Kyssandra, all I get is
> ask kalika about Kyssandra
The ranger leader Kalika stares blankly at you for a moment before saying, "Huh?"
Yep, that's right folks. Kalika didn't talk about Kyssandra and guess what? She didn't place herself above anyone. Okay, now back to the fact that Kalika responded like that to her name. Okay, I'll buy that one too. But who in their right mind is going to admit they know about being beaten when they're looked up to that much? ;-) Okay, so maybe it's a stretch but that seems to be the way this post has been. She helps people; we can go back to the words "guild leader" and go back to the fact that she's "leading them in the right direction". Didn't say she was taking over or putting herself higher. If you look, there are a lot of words in the English dictionary with more then one meaning. Funny how even that word can be taken in many different ways. She doesn't RP Kalika saying to her "Oh, you're in charge now." Just, that she got the status of "guild leader". Okay, think I'll stop for now.
I really didn't want to have to resort to this but you know what, if you don't like the way she RP's, state your opinion, but for the sake of hours of worthless argument that will get you nowhere, just state it and let it go. Let someone who has the authority to do so take care of the situation. If they think it's inappropriate, they will take care of it.
Willican.

Lynch mob RP? Way to help prove your point there.
Besides, everyone knows that I.. Ilimas am king and that Falkonis is my hearald of trinkety goodnees, all will bow before him, so that he may in turn bow before me.
I think all of this fuss over a label on a lockpick case and how someone chooses to play their character is absurd.
Stating your opinion is one thing, but massing together to hit Kyssandra over the head because somehow her "label" offended your hard earned 400 ranks is as close to lynch mob status as you can get.

>>Kyssandra>>She [Kalika] smiled, thanked me, and sent me on my way. [...] I also then acted as a kind of messenger and spoke with a number of the other guild Guild Leaders (Trader, Bard and Empath), and in all three cases I rubbed my lockpick when I introduced myself to them. They all smiled at me after I did so.
Yes ... all good parents, when faced with a child who is obviously doing something foolish but not harmful to themselves or others (yet) would smile and "send them on their way". But only the child would fail to see through that and realize it for what it is.
When Kalika steps out of her office and asks us if anyone has seen Guild Leader Kyssandra lately ... then I will possibly change my opinion. Doubtful, condering the loathing I have for Kailka, but possibly. Only reason I went to Kailka for my last circle the other day was because I was not in the mood for a Barge ride to Lang (<thwaps Raenek about swimming the lake>) nor for a ferry ride across the Faldesu (<thwaps Raenek again about swimming the Faldesu>) followed by a gondola ride across the chasm (<thwaps Raenek again ... gawd, I am so dead when he reads this ...>).
If Paglar said it, on the other hand ... now that carries a LOT more weight.

Re: RPing a Guild Leader on 07/10/2002 04:02 PM CDT
it's one thing to RP a good ranger, but it's a whole nother thing to RP a ranger guild leader.
I might not sit at the guild for hours on end to help people, but that's because i prefer to do it out in the field. I travel alot from city to city, visit different places and hunting areas, and when I come across people who need help I do what i can to the best of my ability.
If simply helping other people made you a Guild Leader, then most rangers would be one, its in our nature. What is being done outside the guild is mentoring, teaching, and guidance for a small percentage of the ranger population. That hardly makes Guild Leader status to me. Every single ranger has to report back to designated leaders in each province at some point in time, will I ever have to report to Kyss? Not unless I wish to have a discussion I can have with many other of my ranger friends in the realms. Like I said, her assistance outside the guild is provided to a small percentage of the rangers that are out there. Just like mine is provided to a small percentage of the people of Elanthia that I find in my travels. It's every ranger's work combined that account for the large percentage of people that we help.
As for Fengreve, that particular insult was uncalled for, ranger's are needed everywhere not just sitting outside the ranger guild. Is that the only place where newbie's gather? Because I seem to remember re-rolling, giving up 60 circles to become a ranger, and moving back to my home town of Aesry at circle 1. And when i died who were the first people to climb over all those stairs and trails from the caves to get me? Fengreve and Miabelle. He also answered the majority of my ranger related questions during my time in Aesry as a newbie.
So how many young ranger's does Fen help? maybe a small amount at the guild, but anyone he can whereever else he might be, and that is just as respectable as what Kyss does.
Rangers are helpful everywhere, at the guild, in the mainland, and on the islands, so just because you don't see the good someone else is doing far away, doesn't mean you should be accusing them of doing nothing.

Re: RPing a Guild Leader on 07/10/2002 04:04 PM CDT
Willican, giving back to the Ranger guild does not mean sitting around the crossing guild teaching skinning and making longbows while having to listen to the crude, the rude, the ignorant, the violent, the ridiculous and the completely insane. Few old rangers will put up with the place. News flash: The ranger guild does not revolve around the crossing! Film at 11!!!!! Many of us have given plenty back to the guild, it's membership and for it's reputation over many years, and you don't even know who we are or what we do because we don't go near the crossing and you've never left it. That alone makes it presumptious for anyone to rp a ranger guild leader. Completely aside from that point is that I've EARNED my 90 unscripted-in-any-way circles. If you can't see why it's vaguely insulting to see someone relatively new to the ranger guild rping to be MY guild leader, you just will never understand. As I said, I'm sure its all in fun. I'm just explaining why it can be insulting to some. Do what you want. -- Ranger Fengreve

>>I've known players who are despised by a lot of people because they are misunderstood.<<
Arctuniol = Misunderstood.
Well not really, I just don't tolerate stuff like what Kyss whatever is doing. No player should be associated with any kind of Guild Leader position. No player will ever be a Guild Leader.
I do agree with this though. Once over 100th circle or 200th circle or something of that sort, Rangers that have Learned survival skills to a decent point. Not just some, but all of them, should be given the ability, when a young ranger below their circle seeks them out, they can grant circle. This would only be for Rangers in my oppinion above 50th or 60th. Rangers at that circle spend less time in or around a city where you can circle.

Heyo,
Lots of good stuff in here.
<<Then let the GM's and Kalika take care of that.>>
I have a better idea, why don't ya Roleplay with her and try to solve it that way. I really don't care one way or another, actually I'm happy to see the Roleplaying. This is not something we as GM's should have to spend time refereeing.
Later,

two things ...one we ve doubled the number of messages in the RP folder today ...way to go team! ... smile
second ..to Jent ... i think this whole situation is a little bigger then just the Roleplay of it all ... i said a few times roleplay a guild mentor / or selfappointed guild leader ...but shes roleplaying an official guild leader appointed by your actuall guild leaders ...although she obviously gives her no additional "power" if that is the word to use ... it can be veiwed by others...wether it is her intent or not ...as disrespectful to there accomplishments and various other yadayada everything ...in short it doesnt seem right that she can elavate herself to be a guild leader ...yad be the man to do something its yer guild right?

>Look at Kyss' web page and tell me how much slacking she's done? Heck, if you want to get technical, she's taken time from us outside the game because she got focused on that handbook.
You're right. It takes a lot of work surfing the web stealing the HTML from other folks' websites.

Staying out of whether Kyssandra's RP choices are right or wrong, there are many ways to roleplay this out without involving GMs.
You could dismiss her as having perhaps become a bit touched in the head from so much time alone in the wilderness doing Rangerly things.
You could offer her potions to heal internal head wounds that might be causing her to have delusions.
You could just chuckle indulgently at a sweet but overly imaginative guildmate.
There are many options besides the GMs settling it, or a bloodbath.
No one says you have to accept the statements of someone to be the gospel, but it certainly doesn't have to lead to GM intervention or violence.
Annee, player of Alinya, wife of a Ranger
P.S. IC, Alinya adores Kyssandra and Willican and is glad that Ilimas introduced her to them and counts them among her friends. I'm merely offering different RP options in dealing with this in the hopes that things do not get ugly.
