Ok so I've finally completed my list of skins, using the thick pattern. This isn't ALL of the available skins, but just those that I thought might be decent.

Background info:
All were made with 100 part arranged hides/skins
A new pattern was used for each SET, but not each hide/skin
All turned out with perfect descriptor

Skills ranged from:
Mech**Leather**Skinning**Agility

Key for table:

L LowM ModerateAv Average

As normal, stats are listed with Protection/Absorption for each category.

I'm currently working on something similar for the collared pattern, however, I can't quite get perfects yet so I may wait a while until I can.
I may also go back and finish off the scaled/regular/skulking patterns, depending on how ambitious I'm feeling.

since discipline plays such a vital role in skinning, might it play a vital role in tanning? What is your discipline?

An interesting proposition. I'm just a few ranks shy of a couple combat milestones (sbow to 400, lbow to 300), after which I plan on doing survivals for a while so I can finally circle. Depending on how patient I am with that, I may have up to 6 circles worth of TDPs to throw around, and I'll think about it. We'll see. I tend to get bored with general survival very easily, and run back into combat... ;)

Would uping discipline by 5 points really make a difference if he was getting perfect leathers anyways? Can you make something "more perfect"?

I believe you can, yes. Just a hunch, but I've seen data where one set of 'perfects' was not the same as another. Same pattern, both using 100 part arranged skins, yet one protected slightly better than the other. The real question is whether I have run up against the caps for that pattern, with that skin. If I have, then I would see no difference.
I would actually probably use collared pattern to test discipline's effect, seeing as I can't get perfects on those yet. Unfortunately, I don't really have the patience to do all that without raising mech, sorry guys.

So far as I can gather, perfect refers to quality of construction/weight/efficiency instead of protection

Indeed, there are thieves and barbarians who, if they tried, (and I know of one thief in particular) that can make Perfectly protecting but not perfectly weighing/tap leathers.

Just to throw a monkey wrench, me and another ranger we did some testing with tanning. Leather armor he had me beat by about 10 ranks, my skinning beat his by 3, mech he beat me by about 11 ranks, beat my discipline by 2, same agility, his reflex beat mine by 2, I had 12 over his charisma. Same pattern, same skin, I could make perfect armor, best he could do was superb and well made.

We tried the same armor pattern (crisp ones) to see if it was a fluke about 5 times. We were goofing off with the reinforced coat patterns and perfect black leucro hides at the time.

Posts per Tarragon:

A question was asked elsewhere about successful stitching of armor. Your armor skill is not a significant factor in determining whether your stitching is successful or not. Rather, your armor skill determines the highest quality of the outcome. So, your armor skill (and other factors) may allow for a perfect outcome of say 100 (quasi-random number). Oops, messed up a stich. Now your best possible is 99. Oops, really messed up, 90. Etc. So maybe one person has a possible outcome of 100 and another of 90, but the one with 100 messes up on the stitching more often than than the guy with 90. So the guy with a 90 possible, doesn't make mistakes and ends up with 90, but the guy with 100 messes up and ends up with 88. There are ways to share your armor making to take advantage of each person's skills. I'll let you figure it out if you haven't already.

<<Additionally, for those trying to eke out all possible advantages, there might be a factor or two that I haven't mentioned anywhere, or haven't mentioned explicitly which can make a difference.>>

I haven't changed the way stitching works from the beginning, so hopefully no one has been led astray as to how things work. It's a bit complicated, though, so it could have been easy for misunderstanding on my or your parts.

I hope that was an understanding explanation.

Regards,
Tarragon U.

There is nothing to prevent non-rangers (other than having/not-having arranged hides) from creating perfect items. Though I have always said that one person's "perfect XXX-hide yyyy" may not be the same as someone else's.

Ok, this may or may not help answer the question. This is how Olwydd's site lists perfect firecat leathers:
Perfect Firecat-Skin Leathers (reinforced) high/moderate high/moderate high/moderate low/moderate fair/moderate moderate/moderate very strong 320 medium

and these are the ones that I am making right now:

Perfect Firecat-Skin Leathers (reinforced) High/mod, High/Mod, Good/Mod, Fair/Mod, Low/Mod, Mod/Mod, quite hard, 322 stones (certain appraisal, not mama's...not sure if that's as acurate) Moderate hinderance.

Notice my leathers have less impact, but better construction...also 2 stones heavier...they still are perfect leathers though.

I don't believe Perfect Firecats come in hhh... But perhaps they do. I've just never seen it.

Not certain though-- confirmations?

These are the ones my MM is wearing:

You feel certain that some perfect firecat-skin leathers appear to impose moderate maneuvering hindrance and offers:
high protection and moderate damage absorption for puncture attacks.
high protection and moderate damage absorption for slice attacks.
good protection and moderate damage absorption for impact attacks.
fair protection and moderate damage absorption for fire attacks.
low protection and moderate damage absorption for cold attacks.
moderate protection and moderate damage absorption for electrical attacks.

If you were only maneuvering in some perfect firecat-skin leathers you would be insignificantly hindered.
But considering all the armor and shields you are wearing or carrying, you are currently lightly hindered.

You are certain that the firecat-skin leathers are quite hard, and are in pristine condition.

The firecat-skin leathers are fairly soft.
You are certain that the firecat-skin leathers weighs exactly 320 stones.
You are certain that the firecat-skin leathers are worth exactly 880 lirums.
