How large of a randomization factor is there in tanning?
I have 225+ mech, near 300 skinning, over 250 in leather.. But when I made the leather's pattern last night, the first time it was Well-made, second time it was Superior. I admit, I'm not used to it coming out so... um. poorly. So, how much of a randomization is there? (The first one was a pattern that'd been used once, the second was never used at all but the three hides).

It depends on what level stitch you got and how well you POKEd your holes to start stitching. If you botched your hole poking and had perfect stitches, the best item you could make is SUPERB.
Level of Stitch:
You carefully stitch together some pieces. You still have more to string together. (BEST, complete your set with that messaging should yield a PERFECT item.)
You begin to stitch the set. You make a small error, but keep on working. You have still got more stitching to do. (almost perfect and one of these = SUPERIOR quality)
You begin to stitch the set. You jab yourself several times and nearly stitch your fingers together, but you keep working. You have still got more stitching to do. (Almost all perfect and one of these = SUPERB quality)
I dont remember the last one, but it had to do with "after several failed starts" (well-made and below).
Every stitch you make affects the outcome of your final product. Thats what I gleaned from Tarragon's post (Tanning's Daddy). If you want more of my thoughts and ideas, ask!

Yeah.. I've tanned plenty of times, just never noticed this inconsistency.
I took off my armor and made two sets in a row that were perfect, but one more that was superior. Then another perfect-- i doubt it was related.
There were no botches, at all- cutting, thread, poking, stringing.
I tend not to botch on Scaled, either.

Yup I often get superiors without any mistakes that I can see. I think pattern overuse might be a factor in that.

Yeah right now I need to use a fresh pattern for perfect reinforceds, if I use one that's been used once already, I get superior. Pattern usage can definitely affect end quality, even if you don't make any mistakes.

Yeah I dunno I didn't do enough to have anything statistically significant, but. Even using a fresh pattern, I ended up with superior, once.
So, strange. Crit miss.
