There is no such thing as off-topic in Claims.
My sig quote comes from a book named Invisible Cities, by Italo Calvino. It's an anthology of ultra-short stories each one describing a surreal / fantastical city. The quoted one in particular is about a city made along astrological perfection that instead of being blessed by the gods sees a relentless stream of deformities and birth defects.
It's a really good book and one of my favorites.

No problem. As it turns out, I'd put the entire passage on our internal staff site as a mood piece for Moon Mages, so have the whole thing:

Summoned to lay down the rules for the foundation of Perinthia, the astronomers established the place and the day according to the position of the stars; they drew the intersecting lines of the decumanus and the cardo, the first oriented to the passage of the sun and the other like the axis on which the heavens turn. They divided the map according to the twelve houses of the zodiac so that each temple and each neighborhood would receive the proper influence of the favoring constellations; they fixed the point in the walls where gates would be cut, foreseeing how each would frame an eclipse of the moon in the next thousand years. Perinthia -- they guaranteed -- would reflect the harmony of the firmament; nature's reason and the gods' benevolence would shape the inhabitants' destinies.
Following the astronomers' calculations precisely, Perinthia was constructed; various peoples came to populate it; the first generation born in Perinthia began to grow within its walls; and these citizens reached the age to marry and haven children.
In Perinthia's streets and square today you encounter cripples, dwarfs, hunchbacks, obese men, bearded women. But the worse cannot be seen; guttural howls are heard from cellars and lofts, where families hide children with three heads or with six legs.

It reminds me a bit of Perdido Street Station, where instead of 'the perfection of order leading to revealing the ugliness beneath', it's 'everything is gross and decaying and all attempts to put order to this randomness has led to the merest of babysteps towards control'.

I believe with Paul Simon that after Music TeleVision and You Tube, music in the music industry became more about looks and appearance than about actual quality of music.

What? Elvis, the Partridge Family, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys would like a word with you. Music has been about appearance for quite a bit longer than MTV, and it's lame to try to blame it on that.
Ask any top 40s hit writer and they will tell you that music is written for catchy and repetitive hooks. Artists will get picked up for looks if it matters (boy bands, single female singers, etc.), but as in everything else in real life, attractive people succeed more. There's no conspiracy to it though, it's simple human psychology.
