First of all, I hate the term pigeon. To me, a pigeon is a bird. If you have a pigeon, you must be a warmage with a strange familiar... Or maybe pigeons don't even EXIST, i've never seen one.

Your mind hears somewhat_of_a_fool thinking, "So and so, send me a pigeon please, mine is up now"

This should be grounds for a severe thrashing. Let me ask, would it be THAT HORRIBLY TOUGH to say instead... 'So and so, is your messenger awake? If he is, could you send him to visit me? I've some words I need delivered to you in a less public place'

Everyone can have a courier, just pay a small fee and some kid will do your running, that's simple, believable, and doesn't make me want to puke every time i see it.

Your mind hears A_COMPLETE_fool thinking, "Yeah so and so, my pigeon is xDRmagex69, send me a hollar if you want"

The first time I heard something like this (AIM screen name listed in a public thought, with Xs or #s included in it), I was beside myself... What the #*!( kind of roleplaying is this? You can't even TRY to hide it at all? I reported it and was told this is not what report is for, and if THIS kind of OOCness will be tolerated, I don't even want the crossing to EXIST in the same game as me.

That should be grounds for exploding gweths, or a 5 year long mental block to prevent thinking. By the time you're skilled enough to find your first J gweth, or save up enough money to buy it (Assuming you aren't just joefool#2 bought fresh off the DRSales list for $xxx dollars who came with gweths and/or plat), you should have the BASIC CONCEPT that this is a ROLE PLAYING game.

You should also have the sense to realize that is NOT roleplaying. God, if you want AIM convos with somebody, ask em where the hell they are, WALK your lazy tail out to them, then WHISPER them your AIM name and talk to them that way. Don't BROADCAST it to the entire friggin world.

.
.
.

Parting thought.. I should've just turned mine on, typed in what I heard in the thought, then gone off on them for being so OOC.. But hindsight is 20/20, I was too shocked that he got away with it to do much more then stand there and think 'Oh no he did NOT...'

Courier Pigeons are no more OOC than a messenger. This complaint is really silly. You're complaining about people using a lame IC method of using OOC tools. Which is exactly what you are suggesting they do instead.

You need to lighten up.

I quit using gweths a few years back. When I returned to play again in 2000, I briefly tried them out but discovered if I wanted to enjoy my time in DR, hearing and responding to the gibberish on the gweths was not it.

Three years later and I have (and am) been living a happy and prosperous life without gweths. One of the best decisions I ever made for my character's development.

Save yourself the grief. Take them off and tune them out.

I think it would be fun if everybody who was on the gweth at that time and heard the message sent them an IM saying "we don't care about your stupid Im name keep it off the gweth." But then it would only be funny if there were at least thirty people that did that. And somehow there's probably a rule against that sort of things somewhere. I just go with what the last poster said and don't use the gweths.

They do. Go out the NE gate in crossing, two north, go path, go gate, east, go gate. Pigeon.

"Hey kid, go find so and so and give him this message, dammit!"

Yessir! Right away! zooms Humanoid courier.. All you need to move it are words.

Now we're going to be using birds? pigeons? You'd need some kind of training to stuff the message in the leg band, make sure it didn't fall out, not let the bird get away while trying to secure the message, keep it from pecking at you if it's mean, hope and make sure it gets to the target without being eaten or shot or blown out of the sky.

Also, it's a wild animal, not always too too reliable. And I don't think everyone in elanthia (cough, pardon me, every OOC person in elanthia) is trained in the handling of animals... But then again, those kind of roleplayers turn into whatever they want with a few words anyway. "Yeah! I can train and use pigeons for messages!" "Yeah, I got this off a dragon I slew a while ago" "Yup, I was once an evil lich until Hodierna found me one day", etc.

And if you're calling it a messenger pigeon, or a courier pigeon, why not just call it a messenger, or a courier PERIOD?

le-sigh.. At least I don't have to deal with this on the islands, except for when a mainlander comes out to visit. Earlier in ratha today, someone was thinking about the kreela being damaged, the sails were almost trashed, and another pirate schooner was heading towards it, and the people on board didn't have a bodkin or anything...

Your mind hears sum_dum_zolurenite thinking, "*Kreela was just struck down!"

Do people really find this amusing in the crossing?.. Or things like it?

OOCness should get you banned to the fallen.

I'd go insane.. Look at me now, I play a massive online multiplayer game so I can..... go play alone by myself because either 1:Everybody is mean and nasty, 2:Everybody is a thief out to get my coins, 3:Everybody wants to kill me because their friend saw me sneaking around and then they checked their pockets and they had no coins (and my 30 stalking, 60 hiding, and 25 stealing can empty out 100th circle traders, really)

So what do I have to keep me company? That's right, the thoughts of lunatic strangers... But on aesry or ratha (Where one can hear the other one long-range), there is usually nothing wrong.

I find "pigeons" to be a clever way of putting it. As far posting "pigeon" names on the gweth, that's a bit much.

I'm constantly hearing borderline OOC stuff on the gweth. By biggest pet peeve is whenever Rottcloar logs in, and all of a sudden a zillion people feel the need to gweth "Hello Rottcloar!"

There are two ways to respond. The docile uninvolved way is to do nothing. The more vocal, but non-aggressive way is to say something like, "There is gibberish in my head!"

Telling someone directly they are OOC on a gweth is OOC. But there are ways to say it without being OOC.

No kidding. GMS are OOC entities and I wish the GMs would shatter the gweths of people who feel the need to shout out a hello to a GM on the gweth when they log on.

Someone had to defend the poor pigeons.

Some of us have IG history with Rottcloar, Quarel, or other GMs. Our characters know them, and they have come down and RPd with us. Yes, I, the player, knows they are GMs, but my characters only know that they are evil, fun-loving, or whatever else they have been in the past.

Quarel especially likes to pop in on Lang & Theren people in the wee hours of the morning...snowball fights, silly invasions and all kinds of stuff ensue. Rottcloar has IG RPd history with at least 3 of my characters. This kind of thing on the gweth doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Back to the original subject...mentioning pigeons doesn't bother me, spouting your IM name 'billybadarse666' is too much.

He has shown up in many places. Most GMs I would agree are an OOC entity. Rottcloar by interacting with the player as much as he has has become more like one of us.

Yes he still is a GM, but he has brought himself down to a more approachable level.

If I saw some GM names on the gweth I would agree, but the way Rotty has been run I do not find that OOC. Have to agree with others sentiments about statng of IM names does not belong on the gweth.

Yeah, I have to agree. Just because a GM pops in early in the morning and plays around with you doesn't make them anymore "real" to Elanthia. I played around with Halo all the time in Platinum. But I knew by doing it, I Bridget was playing with her via the body of my character. Syreh had no idea who Halo was.

Anyway, arguing whether GMs are "real" to Elanthia or not probably shouldn't be done in this folder.

What I hate is when a bad guy, like Grishnok, logs into the game and immediately half a dozen people gweth "Hi Grishnok!" like he's some long-lost friend instead of a mayhem-causing goblin. Besides, how does anyone know when someone logs into the game? That's the part I find the most OOC and annoying. Is everyone clairvoyant, able to sense the presence of everyone else? My characters don't know someone is there unless they speak on the gweth, or she actually sees them for herself. Same with deaths. A bunch of deaths will scroll by and people will start to ask where the invasion is. How did they know, on an in-character level, that there were several deaths in a short period of time unless they stumble upon the invasion themselves?

Eh, just a couple peeves of mine.

So you are saying that even though my characters know and have interacted with these people my characters should just pretend they don't exist when they hear them think something on the gweth simply because I, the player, know they are GMs? Shame on you.

My characters don't gweth hello until they hear them in my thoughts, or say hello unless they are in front of one of my characters. I find to gweth hello or something of that nature to be OOC unless I know they are there because they have placed their thoughts in my characters heads, but to ignore them because they are GMs is, in my mind, more OOC than acknowledging the existence of those my characters have known.

If Syreh has met Halo, then she should know who Halo is. The player knowing someone is a GM is totally different from a character knowing the person.

Rottcloar, Quarel and the rest of the GMs will always be accepted as people (instead of OOC GMs) by my characters anytime I am RPing in Elanthia.

Man, some of you people really need to lighten up. Is it that hard to pretend something didn't happen? If someone says their IM on the gweth how hard is it to just pretend they didn't?

If someone is discussing last night's football game on the gweth back and forth, I can see where that could be disruptive. But for someone to mention an OOC reference doesn't even occur to me. If it really bothers you so much, don't wear gweth. If you feel you absolutely must wear gweths, wear the cheap kind that are only one when you make them.

Not everyone is a hardcore roleplayer. Not everyone is completely anal about momentary ooc references. As a matter of fact I'm willing to bet at least 75% could care less. But one thing everyone has in common is that they are all paying customers. People who pay to have fun.

Having fun is not the same for everyone. Completely losing myself in another world to the point that I get upset if someone does the slightest thing to remind me that Elanthia isn't real isn't my idea of fun.

Some of you people remind of me of those really annoying little kids that tell on everyone because it just pisses them off that someone is doing something they're not supposed to do. Just lighten up, mind your own damn business and stop whining about what other people do.

The former.

I still stand by what I said before. My characters have too much history with certain GMs in RP situations, -not- with assists, etc. for my characters to all of a sudden ignore them and pretend they don't exist because someone else is of the erroneous opinion that to acknowledge them at all is OOC.

It is not "erroneous". GMs and GHs are OOC entities. GMs exist in OOC situations. If a GM took the time to play with you, bully for them. That does not make them any less an OOC entity. There's no reason to shout out a hello to them on the gweth at any rate.

i think everyone takes some of this ooc stuff too seriously, obviously since we are given the capability to see if someone dies, then the correct thing to do would be to help them, or if you have been looking for someone, its rather convient to be able to see when they "wake up" i do agree that actuall pigeon names should not be used on gweth, and to the person that went into the disertation about corrior pigeons should really pick up a harry potter book and enlighten themselves... after all we live in a magical realm too.

I wasn't going to involve myself in this little debate, but I thought I should make a point.

If someone that you, the player, knows as a GM comes into the game and presents themselves to your character in a totally IC (meaning, not coming down as Simu staff) fashion, then it is NOT OOC for your character to acknowledge them. Just because someone works for Simu doesn't mean they don't also play. Try to keep that in mind.

But yes I will agree to to some extent with the gweth problem. Yes, people feel the need to talk via "pigeon" and as long as you keep your talk in-game that I don't have a problem with. Yes, there is a wonderful solution, squelching certain words, pigeon is a good one to start with.

Something fairly amusing occurred to me while reading these posts. Right around the time that Magic was taken away from NMUs, the moon mages started complaining because they could still use gweths. Maelona said that under no circumstances would she take gweths away from NMUs because that would just encourage people to use Instant Messaging more. I find it pretty ironic how people now use gweths to hand out their AIM Screen Name. While I disagree with the OOCness that people are spouting off on gweths, I do think that some are getting way too anal about what's OOC and what's IC. I'm starting to miss the days before we had "rules and regulations" about Consent and OOCness.

Of course not, that's exactly what GMPCs are for. However, if a GM is present wearing the 'Gamemaster' title (or even without a title using his commonly known GM name, though I don't think I've ever seen one do that), then his interaction is not IC no matter what he says and does, it's an OOC encounter between player and GM that happens to occur in game.

I am of the opinion that it is erroneous based on my prior experiences. While most GMs have never interacted with any of my characters in an IC fashion, some have and those that have will continue to be treated as IC members of the population by those characters of mine who have history with them. My apologies if it offends you, but my characters will not change -THEIR- knowledge of said persons because of OOC reasons brought about by other player's beliefs. I agree to disagree with you on this matter.

Your mind hears R(something, rottcloar or rigby) thinking, "Anybody have one of those sigilated platinum rings handy?"

Your mind hears five hundred people say 'Yes' in one form or another.

I agree they are OOC entities, but when they make themselves known to the world through casual conversation... I think they should just be considered a normal citizen though, unless they think something like 'I need a volunteer to teleport up to myself', but they never would.

On another note, approximately one week after I let off a little rant on this, people still don't get it.

If it bothers me that much, how about I start a petition through REPORT to have your character stuck with brain cancer? A malignant tumor that grows with every OOC blurb you force onto the roleplaying community by going 'Well we aren't all hardcore roleplayers'.

Once it has grown to sufficient size, i'll simply track you down to watch you spasm and thrash around as your brain is slowly crushed against the inside of your head from said divine brain tumor, and I'll make sure your epitaph is inscribed with your last words of 'dude!!11! this suxxor!! n e 1 else get braincancer?!?!?!?'

Here's a fact, this is a ROLE PLAYING GAME... If you are not here to roleplay, don't sit around telling everyone else to live with little bits of OOC... GET YOUR ASS TO THE FALLEN..

grunts

This is almost as bad as the boulder people in GS3.

Traz, I don't always agree with you on other boards, but thanks for that last post. It totally made my morning.

It's only OOC if you're thinking OOC. If you're going to roleplay, do it.

Or.. I could just mind my own business, let other people do what they will and watch you have an aneurism over the most insignificant little things because you take things way too seriously.

I think I'll go with option b.
