Long gone day on 07/30/2017 06:24 PM CDT
I couldn't find a good place to put this, so here it lands.
I was (Alemaster) Durah from 1992ish-2004ish, Barbarian. I'm considering a return. While I enjoy many modern games, they ultimately fall short. They simply cannot match a text-based world in complexity. So here I sit, in good old Town Great Southwest, wondering where all the people are with their mortals and pestles; the various pulps and powders whose names I've long forgotten.
Who of the old guard remain? (Not that it would be a deciding factor...)
It does seem that quite a bit has changed, but there is the bank, the barb guild. Perhaps I'll use my trial character to join the War Mages. One way or another, at least one goblin needs to die.
/salute

There's quite a few old players around. Some play their original characters while others have moved onto new ones.
Some things that can ease your return, should you decide to:
Don't use the java webclient. The DR subreddit lays out the various FE's really well:

Welcome back! If you decide you still enjoy playing, there's a very good chance that customer service could resurrect your old character(s).

On the bright side you can roll a new character and be back to 40th circle within 2 or 3 months, even with the learning curve you'll have returning. The 'new' experience model is light speed compared to what it was when you left. 200th circle isn't the norm. I can't remember exactly what the last census said but I think the majority of characters are in the 50th circle to 150th range. If you reactivated a 60th circle character you could chug right along in the middle of the pack. You'll probably benefit more from rolling a new character though; in terms of learning how the game has changed.
There is a lot to catch up on.

I do appear to indeed. Probably 18h at this point. I've got to work out whether I need to - if stats have changed quite that much. I did have a pile of TDPs I did not have last time around, but the same basic stat; invested where I would have otherwise.
I'll probably just muddle along unless I uncover some sage advice soon.

I absolutely recommend using the respec. You only get one, and after 24 hours it's no longer an option.
Worst case scenario you just put your stats back where they were.
Best case you figure out you need to massively change things and can fix that.
A full respec potion from the game-store is like 50$.

May I ask: has the effect of various stats changed significantly in any respect? I've been trying to find something more like a precise guide to determine whether I'm out of date, but I tend to find general explanations in line with the way things were some time ago.
Unless things have changed that much, I may just muddle on as always

In almost every respect.
Seriously, you lose nothing by using the respec. Just do it. Then ask in your guild gweth channel, or your guild forums folder, for stat advice based on your desired goals, weapons, skills, etc.
