Remember when forged goods were rare and you had to know someone who knew someone who could get you a blade?
When forged armor was still awe-inspiring and semi-mythical?
When 15 plat for a blade was a great price?
I remember when I used to hunt in Blood Wolves <during the Sorrow War> and Maulboro would climb the tree in the middle. He jumped off a few times, once landed on someone and killed them. He always used to arrive in Bloodies without armor and get splattered. Always surprised us for some reason.
To Zephis who made us our first plat by skinning bundles and bundles of blood wolf pelts. We'd kill them and he'd skin him.
I also remember hunting with Snothwoven, who should have his own version of Itharr's song. He persuaded us to try Rock Trolls at 5th circle, back when they cast tremor and could hit you at missle range with their trunks.
I remember when a red-green bloodstone, yellow sapphires and amethysts were a big deal. When Jutus persuaded us we could hunt Rock Trolls in Shard <which for some reason were more deadly>.

How bout the days when store bought stuff was awesome....long before forging ever
came around...and it was amazing to actually be able to afford to purchase a full
plate suit of armor from an NPC shop.
Or no graves, no res.
Not as many citys....more friendly people less snerty ones..hrm
I remember my first character , a paladin, getting a gleaming broadsword and thinking
that sword was the best sword ever.....and then finally saving up the 17 plat for
a store bought bastard sword and thinking that was the end all be all of swords. heh

I can second that idea on weapons and such, the days when 'bastard sword', aside from raising a little giggle, was sort of like 'woah, wait, wait, wait, it can be used as EITHER a one or two handed sword? Where can I get one and who would I have to kill?!' Now, it seems it's like, wee, look, a weapon, gimme numbers on it.
Re: Memories on 07/27/2003 11:24 PM CDT
I'll third that idea on bastard swords and other weapons. As soon as I had the 17 plat, I took a trip to SCC. I also remember kaskaras, Leth nimshas, and jade-hilted nimshas being used/talked about on a regular basis in the late 90s.
Who here doesn't remember finding massive silver nuggets and massive silver bars on a regular basis before the treasure system change?
I can't say much about the snerty people since I've avoided Crossings for much of my time in the realms. What I can say though is that I started noticing a change in DRs atmosphere when they started getting high enough to leave the Crossings area and travel to the outer reaches of the realms.

I recall going to Theren Keep to get a haubrek, the best shop LC in the realms, and being stuck in the keep for hours until the drawbridge came back down. Going to Theren was like going to the ends of the earth and I couldn't imagine how exotic the islands must be.
Scraping together the few gold for a Marchek's weapon and being proud of owning one...
Having my first 100 plat to spend at a festival...
Having to run scripts from the gem store to the bank, from the furrier to the bank, from the bank to the ferry <several times cause I got robbed silly> in the days before traders sold gems for you.

<<<Going to Theren was like going to the ends of the earth>>>
Agreed. After I moved from Shard to Haven, I remember going to Shard or Theren only if I had to because of their location in relation to the rest of the realms' major cities.
<<<Scraping together the few gold for a Marchek's weapon and being proud of owning one...>>>
Agreed here also. I'm still using the cutlass I bought in '98 from Marachek's. Dang good weapons. I was suprised I made it through gargoyles without damaging or breaking it.
Along the same lines, I remember when people found out that Aesry had customizeable weapons as well as the ability to engrave your weapons. I still wish we could engrave bastard swords, but oh well. I understand the reason behind why we can't. Doesn't mean I have to like it though. ::grins::

One of the less pleasant changes along with the mana denumbering and 'IC' time nomenclature. Supposed to make it more IC, but instead it takes it from data the OOC player can instantly assimilate and use to something jarring that has to be analyzed and translated.

actually, the first one in da family who "transported" to m'riss was my paladin, who was naturally throughly lost, and was then soundly beaten by a peccary, and he returned home.
the others in the family who have tattoos all got there by "solve the puzzle" method.
Aesry i first discovered by the shards. I hadn't gone there before. it was astounding the work that went into creating all the islands and the atmosphere. Unfinished, and a work in progress, but still quite a feat.

And before that was the strange sphere/orb/thingie that you stepped into and touched a certain shard or crystal or something to transport to another city. That was somewhere around the time of the web migration, I think.

Ha. I remeber the outcry of the older generatrions living on the island, grabbing thier canes and rattling on about youngins' rambling around thier islands, being jerks. I just used mine to teleport between Crossings, shard, and Haven, running to reavers, loading down to squishy stage (like, the backpack, and a haversack or two, courtesy of the shard :) ) and zapping myself to a pawnshop. Made a killing for my age back then, since I was the only one who thought to do something like that. Of course, I also learned that the islands have hecka long climbs :)
Re: Memories on 08/01/2003 12:57 AM CDT
You weren't the only one that thought to do that with pawnshops.
I did that with a considerable amount of Cough..hotmerchandise..cough.
Would go pilfer in crossing and go poof and sell my stuff in shard or aesry.
Because pawn shops have been broken for a long time.
Unlike gemshops and skins, where there is a guaranteed price for the kabillionth small diopside and rat pelts sold. Helps keep the game playable for the novice, but not for the "purveyer of used merchandise".

I still find tons of these, the actual bars are more rare, but I find dozens of tiny silver bars, even more tiny silver nuggets, several massive nuggets, and maybe a massive bar or two. They all go into the gem pouch and eventually to a gem shop, then eventually into the black hole that is my provincal debt.
Who remembers every box being 'One of the three'?... Your trap was either (pick one)
A poison needle! Oh no!
An acid blaster, another one!
A boomer, just like the rest!
........
Nowadays, I find some hideous contraption on a box i'm about to disarm, and just mutter a short prayer before I try to disarm it, not knowing what it'd do if it went off. Was fun learning of the danger of a scarab box AFTER I disarmed it.

For those who remember him, good ol Talonkarde just dropped by today to say hi. Since he and his warrior mage website was largely the reason I started playing Dragonrealms, I just wanted to mention it.
Talonkarde says, "The trouble with meeting up with old friends is that I typically can't invite them hunting, because they've always surpassed me in circles"

Some of my most vivid memories from some pretty old days...
Phangor-clause in Crossing and the reindeer invasion
the chicken invasions that left us scrambling for gold eggs.
Seems like a long time since the skunks have invaded, either.
I remember the first day the gondola was rediscovered and the trail littered with bodies
I too, remember when Haven was considered such a long way from Crossing. I was shaking in my boots as a youngun to go up the very scary NTR. :)
I remember the day the Gorbesh exploded the mines.. were a bunch of us in the temple of Light in Shard and I watched gweth after gweth break. :(
I remember the web migration plagues and how so many went around with mourning armbands to remember those that didn't make it.
I wonder how many of the newbies nowadays even discover some of the things that I remember exploring as a youngster - like the cave north of the stream in goblins.. :)
It's been a magical place for a lotta years, and I'm still hooked. Nowadays, in a lot of ways, I think DR has become better than ever. But, I miss a lot of the old folk, that's for sure.

Re: Memories on 12/24/2003 01:24 PM CST
Heh, I remember a few of those events too, Kilaana. I wasn't around for the reindeer invasion, but I do remember when goblin archers invaded. I was only circle 3 or so, and ended up getting stunned by an arrow. Heh... and of course back then the "godly" 20th circlers made quick work of 'em. ::grins::
I remember the gorbesh war, but I missed most of it due to RL reasons. I remember the Shard festie -- I still have some items from it, little ones I could afford back then. Oh, and as for skunk invasions -- there was one in Lang a handful of weeks ago. Dunno what happened to the skunk stripes... I prolly sold them. :)
I remember when I was 2nd or 3rd circle... hunting in rats with Xamis and another guy (forget his name). We ended up saving a poor newbie from an invasion of dozens of rats in the ship area, where they just kept coming in. Fought side by side and toe to toe with a swarm of rats... that had to be one of the most thrilling experiences of my young life.
I remember my first journey up to Haven... I had to get a few pointers from Luckgiver (my sweetie waaaay back then) to make it to the ferry. When I got up there I remember investigating the swamp troll area when the pierwalk was still a mini-invasion area. I was 7th circle, stepped into the melee, and promptly got stunned. After I retreated and ran out, I ended up with a bleeder. I never went back until I was in the mid 20s circle. Oh, Haven is where I bought an Elven longsword, one of my first decent HE weapons.
And yes, I have explored that lovely waterfall in the stream between gobs and cougars. :)
Yes, back then it was fun exploring without maps, listening to player-created rumors and investigating new stuff. All with a much smaller, more devoted group of characters. I guess you could say that the well-known folks back then are legends for us old timers who still remember their names.

Do you remember typing out the directions like w for west and hitting enter? Before you realized the directions were macro'd to the number pad?
I remember my first day in the realms. I went out to goblins with a scimitar. I was brand new and I had no idea what was going on, so I was advancing everything in the room. I advanced another player by accident and he killed me. I had no idea what I was doing after I was dead. I was so confused.

I still type out w, e, n, s when I'm in the middle of doing something to move around. It's faster to type those in and hit enter than it is to go to the numpad and then have to reposition your fingers at the home keys...for me at least.
But for long distance travel, the numpad is the best invention ever. It beats every script I've ever seen in pure speed, it's just nice.
