Big Pile of Stuff in the Room == "Who died?"

One of my favorite memories is the day that shoplifting was released. There was an (unofficial) Thief guild meeting in the jail that day. And for some reason, it took a lot longer to get out. It was so much fun.

<<Big Pile of Stuff in the Room == "Who died?"

The crazy thing is even with all of those deaths, everything a character was wearing just spilled out on the ground with no related anti-theft mechanics whatsoever, I can't remember graverobbing being a big problem and am pretty sure I was never graverobbed at all myself.

Smaller community was easier to self police, maybe. Or maybe I'm just remembering the early moments of the game through rose colored glasses and never happened to be victimized myself for whatever reason. It'd be interesting to put a finger on when things changed toward today's standards, if there was in fact a noticeable change.

I can. It was more of a problem then because you'd never even know if one or two things were simply stolen or lost to the janitor. I never departed without someone watching my things.

Hmm, maybe that is what it was. I never played/died alone, and so always either had a survivor or the rescue party (more likely) to watch my/our stuff.

Anyway, unintentionally derailing the thread at this point.

I recall standing over many such piles with loaded crossbow, for friends and strangers alike. It was a solemn duty. It never once occured to me that shooting a graverobber could be against policy. Heh. (Policy?)

I know that my character lost entire inventories numerous times. Mostly only during invasions, though. I think the snerts come out to play more often during those sorts of crises.

I specifically recall this happening to me once or twice before graves were introduced.

We usually hunted in groups to watch one another's things, all before graves. Good thing, too, because every run Rhysling, Gorhaut, Kakatal, Eostre, Kaleesh, Dakkone et all went on was a suicide run. Sometimes I think Rhys picked the spot just so we would get killed. Entertaining at the least.
As to Mir, he was my first mentor in the first WM guild, back when Robintion would blow up boxes, step calmly from the rubble and say sheepishly "Robin go boom" before heading outside to find an empath.

I ended up as a Cleric, Karalys, married to a Barbarian, Talvor. Our once huge family, expanded regularly by Aleez(awhatevernumbershedgottento) who couldn't resist adopting every stray she ran across, had dwindled by then, and all moved to various islands to avoid the snertiness of the mainland.

Talvor and I (who will be married eventually in RL) are still in regular contact with Soulner, Erefayna and Tobren.

Sometimes I think having been in Elanthia at the height of everything, from at or near the start is a detriment. It will never again be what it was, just because it was new and it was all REAL to us.

Still, we all keep trying, don't we?

Does anyone remember the almost-infamous Stomp on Crossing a few years back?

About 90 dwarves gathered at Stone clan, then stomped our way to Crossing, with Hegemonic waving the banner. Caused quite a riot on the gweths, as people thought it was an invasion.

Good times.

Getting decked out in wolf clan gear because of all the pockets.

Fighting in the invasions before Shard opened with Niktika and Hackard.

My first festival, and not being able to afford a snake charm even then. >:[

'Old' backpacks/haversacks/rucksacks.

Evilruler/Varkon and Gurt's race to 30th.

Being attacked on sight for being a thief with your profession showing... or not having your profession showing and wearing a crossbow. :P

Shard's door having NOTHING on Theren's study door. But there never quite being anyone awake there... accidentally helping Valgograd (Valgo-bot?) get 40th by stealing from him while he was scripting...

Shapeshifter and Tirsten selling plats for 2 bucks a piece.. and that amazing mythical armor that I only spied once..

Gonk and Czarra, two of my favorite GMs of all time. You can jab out my eye any day.

Hunting crocs forevermore... stealing from people there then hiding in the floorboards of the shack.

Nambel's incessant destruction of any who crossed him on ferries.

SA's panty checks on the ladies in the guild. ^_^

One word. Addlestuk.

People gating at the NE gate so that newbs accidentally ended up in rock guardians because of Moon Gate instead of Moongate. God I loved Nambel.

Being astounded the first time I saw a moon mage teleport (Chiromancy).

Harrassing Sunnie and Chiromancy when they were trying to mentor by walking in with newb gear and asking where to find backpacks. :P

The people I loved hanging out with in my guild... Kainan, Tzigane, Niktika, Kintanna, Ryskien, Shaydee, Nishu, Gyre, Lorzelophia, Vrulle, Gregarin, Ann...

Varkon dragging the ferry from Crossing to Leth.

Hing scammming the beggar and getting locked out for giving him -9999 kronar, over and over and over and over.

Oh memories. I won't take anymore time to name drop, I've done that enough.

Does anyone remember the name of the "shadow-mage" guild who lived in 'Haven and kept some of the clerics stocked with holy oil while keeping his shadow-mage ranks high in the cleric shop? I've forgotten his name and its driving me buggy. And Tyrun, name drop all you want, its great hearing the old names and remembering things I'd forgotten.

One of my favorite documents is a snippet of gweth conversations during an invasion of black DS back in '98. Many names are in there: Cloudcrest, Rewyn, Dritzfury, Guole, Bartree, Rock, Meanne, Maxnangnus, Eneah, Mithrandirr, Cyiarriah, Phangor, Tishra, Easttuth, Lachdonan, Flashingblade, Blasword, Ogredd, and many others.

I remember when everyone wanted OGSWP.

Of course, there are not-so-great moments that also stand out...

I recall being robbed blind by Nambel on the ferry to Haven. I learned my lesson and never carried much money around afterward -- at least not in platinum coins. ;)

I remember casting Ice Patch on a young thief trying to pick my pockets in reavers, only to have Deneeria pop out of the shadows and try to kill me for 'picking on' her young 'charge'. That was pretty funny.

Anyone remember Ssliver?

Ugh, I hated that guy. My first char was a trader, that was the first guild I found and they actually hung out there and were all really nice.

It seemed that anytime I had a contract to Leth though, Ssliver was there waiting for me, pointing me out of hiding to steal and taunt me. Oh he was so annoying...we sort of ended up being friends in the end though. Funny things happen in this game.

This was in the AOL days.

He was staying with Emmiline last I heard, dunno if he's found a new place yet. Basically his sister? came around looking for him and found him wandering around in his daze. She was able to restore him to some semblence of peace, and he then muscled his mojo around in some poor girl's mind like Super-Robo-Empath rooting out some sort of nasty worm-thing that allowed a cabal of bad guys down in Ilithi to make her do their bidding (they made her spread the Plague, if you were around for that).

He still can't/won't heal or do other things like "normal" empaths/autopaths, but I got the feeling that should he ever again reach that plateau of full sanity he'd easily be able to out-empath the lot of us.

<<I caught Edgee in my pockets when I was little.>>

I got into a fight in goblins with Edgee and Airaman when I was little. They were both youngins too, at the time. Or at least one of them was, because I got a couple decent hits with my longbow on one of them. Its been so long, I can't remember too many of the details, but it boils down to me stealing from one of them, and them both coming after me, and me and a buddy fighting them . I think my buddies name was Linstein, or something similar to that. I'm pretty sure we ended up losing. Years later, after a break from the game, I realized that Edgee was now huge. When I came back to the game, I was still struggling to kill swamp trolls.

Good times.

I got into a fight with Airaman once after killing his friend and his friend's big brother. I agreed to duel Airaman only if it would be the last friend I had to fight. This was back when Airaman was one of the top 3 or 4 barbarians in the game. I took a snap shot with my DSX and go a lucky crit and dropped him. Afterwards he made me try and hit him for 10 minutes and I couldn't even scratch him. That was priceless.
