I am shocked no one has mentioned sinking the ferry with a lightnin bolt wand.

It existed, but very rare. Wish I'd kept the character I got it on way back when. Just like I wish I'd kept the backpacks and silvered rapiers and vicious rapiers and katars and yadda yadda yadda.

Damned necros. :-)

lord sorrow "freed" the s'lai by the traders i think. was always fun to run by there when a WM would be chasing you down for stealin' their coins. SQUIISH!

and it was always amusing for Timothy to show up in old masters' den of the thief guild under that grate in the center of town. Damn empath was a spy, i tell ya.

Out of curiosity, did you make everyone stop trying to kill Lyras so you could go try to kill Book?

I remember when Barbarians had absolute MR (unless they were completely overwhelmed), but it didn't interfere with group casts.

I remember when casting from runes never caused backlash. However, there was always the problem of cambrinth with the wrong mana!

Gah, I remember stopping off there for snacks with Cemm when he was traveling back and forth. Sicle Grove was a neat little outpost.

Whatever happened to Timothy? I assume he isn't still wandering around anymore?

<<Well, when I started...
<< - Bards weren't released yet, so no enchantes.

Heh, I still remember creating my first character from the AOL side after DR was opened up to OH accounts (initially we were only able to play from GEnie) and stumbling across Dreamweaver and seeing that she was a barbarian.

Dreamweaver was arguably one of the most prolific/beloved of Gemstone's bards in the early 90's so it was an funny thing to see. The situation was later rectified with the launch of the guild in DR and the coming of Dreamheart. :)

I remember that all new characters popped on Gull's View Lane in the Crossing at the stairs down to the docks. I can't remember when it changed, but it was obviously after the Lorethew Mentor Society was launched ingame.

Another funny thing is that the Mentor's Society was an homage to a time honored player tradition that started in the earliest days of Gemstone, was eventually formalized as an official society with all its support goodies in DragonRealms, and then Gemstone finally followed suit with its own chapter a couple of years later.

When there is only 10 to 20 people logged into the game world that consisted of only a very small area (Gemstone II and early III) compared to the game worlds of today, it was an easy thing to quickly recognize any newcomer logging on and hunt them down to offer assistance. So pretty much everyone got a welcome party and some mentoring when first starting out in the game back then.

When DR was launching, the vast majority of players were GS veterans that carried over this tradition of helping new folks out. I believe this was a major instigator of the eventual formalizing of the tradition in the creation of the official Mentor's Society.

It's neat that this official Mentor's Society arrangement eventually appeared over in GS a couple of years later. Lots of things have been traded back and forth between the games over the years, but I've always found the path the Mentor's Society took in the games kind of interesting.

I don't know what the RP story was, but it got to the point where players would swarm him constantly trying to get stuff from him, so the GMs removed him.

That link doesn't entirely make sense to me because I know Timothy was removed for a long period of time back in the late 1990s. I guess he made a re-appearance at some point that I didn't notice.

You are correct. He was missing for a very long while.

Back during the lead into the open of p5 the GMs gave his story/event some closure.

Wow, I did miss that wrap up. Thanks for linking to it! I'm really glad it wrapped up that way, at least for now. It was sad watching people take advantage of his madness like they did.

Some crazy memories:

1. Sig rings holding an unlimited number of skins/items.

2. The day gravity/weight was introduced.

3. Stacking courage.

4. When ferry jumping was a serious accomplishment.

Ah, the old signet rings. Not only did they have a huge capacity, but they could be opened and closed.

That was actually a bug that had to do with skins having effectively zero, I believe.

Back when Crocs were bugged and had effective 0 Agility, my original PC and Tykel (I miss this guy) spent about 5 hours in the swamp one day filling up signet rings (This was pre-bundle, even). I think we stopped at around 200 each.

Ah, youth.

I'm skeptical since they quickly filled my backpack and required "packing".

I remember when you could fit them in any container by putting a weapon in first, putting the skin in, taking out the long weapon, and then repeating.

Stuffed a backpack full of silverfish antennae in the Crossing sewers.

Also when people took the length of descriptions seriously as a measure of a character's status, and then those rosettes came out from a merchant/fest that were one of the first items that could be just "worn" and had a sizable description length, and then people ran around wearing a dozen or so rosettes to boost their description length to several pages.

Yeah, that's what I meant by packing. It was annoying to have to do that every time.

Me too. I now strive for minimalism.

I also judge people with 4 page long descriptions.

I know this is a long long time to post about this, but I just happened to read about Timothy's story and ending just today. Thank you soooo much Annwyl for post the link.

I was unable to be in the realms for most of that time due to taking care of my father. So I missed a large part of the event (though amazingly I woke up a day before P5 was opened and was able to go there the firest day).

I always wondered and I really do miss Timothy. I was honored once to be healed by him while hiding in the bakery. And I never knew you could give things to him and he would gift you back with sometimes spectacular results.

Thanks again for the link.
