Its been a long time since I've run a thief, but I've recently started one up. I'm considering a barbarian persona and plan on training 2HE and HE when doing 'conventional' combat. But I was wondering if I use a ME for backstabbing - if I keep backstabbing in line with my 2HE and HE skills, will it train ME to a similar level, or am I going to have to give ME some conventional combat loving as well?

Backstabbing trains LE fine, for me. I never have trouble locking it at level: at most, I just stab a couple extra times. I doubt ME would be any more problematic.

Just keep in mind that your survival skills are going to outpace your weapon skill. Which is nice, because it means you rarely fail a backstab.

@ Circle 30

Backstab: 133 79.88% clear
Light Edged: 117 88.13% clear
Hiding: 180 77.21% clear
Stalking: 150 62.30% clear

All from only training Backstab. It trains great. Least with Light Edge

I have only ever used LE as my main weapon and it gets trained plenty by backstabbing. It is only 14 ranks behind backstab skill at present. I usually dance with critters until defences are mindlocked, then go on a stabbing spree to do the same for hide/stalk/bacstab/LE. If anything I have found backstabbing works weapon skill a little too well as landing critical hits almost every time teaches very well.

This one made me laugh as I have never done it before:

You slip out of concealment and backstab a one-eared snow goblin!
< Moving with powerful grace, you thrust a dark sword with red etchings along the blade at a one-eared snow goblin. A one-eared snow goblin fails to evade, mis-stepping and blundering into the blow. The sword lands an apocalyptic strike (So that's what it felt like when Grazhir shattered!) that cleaves the foe clean through from collarbone to hips.
A one-eared snow goblin stares at you stupidly for a moment, before its eyes roll backwards into its head. The creature's skin turns frosty blue, taking on an icy appearance, as it falls to the ground with a thud.
[You're nimbly balanced]
[Roundtime 1 sec.]

Cut the thing in two with a backstab from a m/l/p LE hehe.

For what it's worth, Backstab is the only way I've been able to get Offhand Weapon moving.
