Remove both hands and they can't pick it up anyway.

[Sandar's Surplus Supplies, Sales Floor]
A wide sales counter sits prominently in the back of the shop, providing a surface for merchant and customer to haggle or exchange goods for coin. A steel table sits on the bare floor, with a steel trunk placed nearby to provide a variety of browsing options. A black oak cabinet stands against the the oaken walls. Grime has collected along the walls, and small white cobwebs obscure the corners.
You also see a bucket of viscous gloop, a plaza guard and an oaken door.
Obvious exits: out.
> shop
The following items contain goods for sale:
a steel table
a steel trunk
a black oak cabinet
[Type SHOP [ITEM] to see what's on it.]
> shop cabinet
In the black oak cabinet, you see:
a sniper's heavy crossbow etched with angled patterns
a weighted black iltesh embellished with glossy enamel
a sleek black briquet set with ox-blood coral in the pommel
a hooded katar enhanced with dark knotwork along the grip
a sniper's light crossbow studded with smoky crystals
a sniper's composite bow mottled grey and brown
a sniper's short bow veined with matte silver
a deep grey sabre with a supple leather grip
a matte steel falcata with a sharply curved blade
a glinting steel cutlass with a sculpted hand guard
a darkened scimitar with a simply embossed blade
a polished dueling sword with a brushed red gold hilt
a long silvered rapier with a carefully crafted hilt
[Type SHOP [GOOD] to see some details about it.]
Also I'm pretty sure you can't hide behind game mechanics to avoid a PvP scenario, which this is. News 2 15. /hat tip

How is anyone hiding behind game mechanics? Because the Trader isn't currently in the shop?

>>>be PvP open or you're just going to get banned from the shop and ignored.
Putting fade weapons on your table and then banning anyone from the shop, of course you could always go pvp open so his HLC friend/alt can come kill you. Either way, no skin off my teeth. A few years ago I would have been annoyed to see stuff like this IG (though it would have been Ambika), anymore the only thing that annoys me is that the thief guild is in such a state of disrepair that nobody cares. I miss the thief community, you're just another guild now. =/

If actively seeking out and killing a relatively defenseless PvP Open Trader is something that appeals to you, you should also have the guts to be Open and take what comes to you. Stop treating policy like it's some sort of PvP defensive buff for your character that allows you to kill someone you clearly outclass without consequences.
This has all been for fun. Nobody's being griefed, and nobody's making a killing off of Fade weapons. Further, if my crew can figure a way to ensure a fair fight for someone who decides to play, we will. But if clinging to the possibility of reporting if you lose in PvP is your thing, then play in someone else's sandbox. You seem to be pretty good at sitting on the sidelines and crying, so maybe you should just stick to that?
I will agree on one thing though: Several years ago this would've sparked a nice little war, and the level of response thus far has been unimpressive to say the least.

I have just been far too busy lately and have barely logged in during the last few weeks but my Thief has always been one of the staunch followers of the old code and would get involved with something like this in a heartbeat.
It's good that you are taking the opportunity to use the tools provided to provoke a bit of conflict and I think everyone should keep in mind that the weapons were created to promote some pvp should they fall into the wrong hands. I would say that it's fine for Thieves in general to be up in arms about them being in plain sight, but if they plan to do anything then go into it in the spirit which was intended - i.e. pvp open and prepared to have some fun.
As you say, a few years ago it would have sparked a little war, so it is ironic that now we have all these tools for conflict nobody is interested. I would theorise that this is because there is only a small number of people interested in prolonged player conflict, but I digress.

I (and I guess my character) just don't have a problem with them being sold in a trader shop. Either they will be eventually sold where someone can attempt to retrieve them from the new owner or they sit there in the shop (where they will not be used in any conflict and makes them useless for all intense and purposes).

Sadly I've been too busy lately to make it a point to travel to the tables to check on them. But the thief community even outside of Fade weapons is sad. Thieves "backstabbing" thieves now. Kinda seems things went downhill after the guild got raided and had to be moved.

Just because we're in the same guild doesn't mean I have to care or even like any of you in-game. Last thief social I went to was a kumbaya hand-holding circle of peace and love. If that's what brotherhood and old code is about now, I'm going to stick with the thieves who've abandoned the old ways.
As for the Fade weapons and Sandar/Latathi subject - Honestly, I see absolutely no fun in the situation. I've already marked Sandar with my thief. If I could kill him, it would take a miracle. But why bother when it means having Latathi and his crew roll me for messing with what appears to be his own trader he's protecting? All this situation has done is taken all the RP options out of the hands of the smaller thieves and turned it into yet another 150th PvP playground.

I swear. Some of you people seem decent enough in game, but give you a forum account and you turn into the biggest whiners.
Not four posts up I said that we'd make an effort to furnish a fair fight for lower levels when possible. Unfortunately, I don't predict that any of us will have the will to roll a new character and level it up to 10th circle so that we can match your Thief who apparently can't take a Trader with less than 100 evasion. I find it more than a bit odd that you felt that was a legitimate enough complaint to warrant pressing the POST button.

I can't speak for the rest of the guild, as I haven't been to a social since the opening of the new Crossing guild, but the hand holding and peace/love was certainly not part of the old ways. There was more murder and violence, but this would fall on the heads of those who didn't understand or care about keeping the guild's secrets.
We certainly have never been quite so subdued as a guild. The last major Thief/non-Thief conflict I can remember was when some folks tried to undercut the Locksmith Union's prices.
It probably stems from the lack of community. When you joined the guild and had that sense of achievement, found the den and shot the breeze with anyone there, you were always careful about what you said and did, but you would eventually become a face. Nowadays you can see people talking openly about Thief guild abilities, and I even saw a guilded Thief gwething for the location of the guild entrance on Ratha.
I could go over the reasons why we are where we are, but they have been discussed before. I think it boils down to a general apathy, probably due to a lack of a Thief GM since last June, and population spread due to the need to move to new hunting grounds.

It's a criminal organisation, of course there will be power struggles, intrigue and a fair amount of backstabbing (figurative and literal). There were GM sanctioned player enforcers, there was an internal guild war and there was the raiding of the old guild in recent history.
It was a tough place to be and this was intentional. The code was just a set of unwritten guidelines to keep the chaos to a minimum.
Yes there was an element of fear, watching your step, purse, back and everyone around you, but the goal was to keep the guild secret and mysterious. Nowadays there is no fear, no respect and no mystery which is why there is no longer a guild identity or community.

I'll just disagree with you. For the most part, 'old' thief RP was about power for a few players. Not characters, players. It was not fun or enjoyable for me as a player.
I think the game as a whole has moved on from a lot of the older RP/groups.
You could try to make a new code, and get some people rolling with it?

I think it has very little to do with seeking out a defenseless trader and more about relieving said trader of thief only weapons. In the very least encouraging him to remove them from a table open to the general public.
Perhaps the trader shouldn't openly provoke characters that clearly outclass him without expecting consequences.

I miss the old guild. I don't even play a Thief anymore because it's just not the same. My favorite DR moment ever was still some low level Trader named Strongbow getting pissed off because Hackard, Kainan(and I think Captain J. I didn't have much of a personal relationship with him but I miss old Captain J more than almost any of the original thieves) and I were following him on his trade route stealing all his coins because he was popping off at the mouth about killing every Thief he finds and shouting on the gweth, "THE THIEF GUILD IS IN <correct location, this was before passages and multiple guild entrances>. EVERYONE MEET ME THERE TO KILL EVERY THIEF WE SEE GOING INSIDE!" after an hour of us just stealing every coin he made. Literally like 30 seconds later he dies and someone gweths, "Holy crap! Kalag just killed Strongbow in the bank!"
I remember people used to show up at the Den and tell everyone that someone was outside the bank telling someone else where the guild was, and we'd form up a posse(because there were never fewer than 20 people sitting in the Den, ever. And if there were, that just meant the party had moved to the Crossing jail or the stocks) and go kill both people involved.
The Thief guild lost it's identity and everything that made it fun 10 years ago.

Unequal comparison.
There is a lot of RP going on in the game, in various places. You might have to work to get in. But it's a lot more interesting to me, in concept than 'thief bully action 402050303052'. Because most of the 'thief' stuff is just a power trip, to me.
There are some really cool thieves, who enforce the rules with the spirit of good gameplay. But most of them I've run into really just want to have power, and I get enough of that in real life.

Someone suggested starting a gang and claiming some place as a hideout, etc. I'll share a really, really old memory with you.
Once upon a time, thieves were (from the outsider perspective) a plague on the world. When 25th circle was God-like, having plats was amazing. Right up until some little punk arse liberated it from you. Which in turn started a manhunt, especially if that same thief had tagged other people as well. Hopping on the ferries with money to go shopping was a risky endeavor. Getting to the ferry, hiding then getting pointed out and robbed blind by someone was amazingly conductive to blind rage, but intensely fun looking back.
That was just to set the story. The thieve's guild in Crossing used to be accessible to anyone, if you knew how to get in. After a campaign of mugging, pick pocketing and generally obnoxious behavior, half the guilds in Crossing set aside their differences (and we had differences in those days. Warmies hated Moonmages, Barbs hated anything that used magic, etc), teamed up and stormed the Haven. It was a all out bloodbath for weeks.
That didn't stop the thieves from being thieves, but it did lend something to the, "Us against them" mindset, especially when the Thieve's guild was sealed off so only Thieves could get in. Had to be. Thieves had to have somewhere to be safe! Everyone was out to get them! If you start up a gang and start doing what "the old guard" did with a accessible hideout, get ready for hectic times. ;)
That being said, I stop into the Crossing guild about once a hour (during off-times, but hey). I've only had my thief for about a week. I've met and talked with exactly one person, seen a couple other shop lifters doing bin duty. I'm not willing to sit there, thinking about the Climbing, Hiding and Foraging I could be doing on the off-hope that someone will come around to talk to. Sad but true.
...ya'll start a gang though, and I am -down-.

How it was before and now is totally different. For example if you got out of character you be struck down by green lightning. Secondly you did or see a thief do something bad/stupid or out in the open like teaching stealing you could actually Report to (guild leader) SoandSo is teaching stealing on the green or so and so is showing a commoner where the hideout is! The leader would then come a wake and kill them or would actually send thugs to beat them up. This so called thiefs guild isn't a guild it is a pawn shop; and Assassins for hire!
Before if you attacked or stole from another guild mate you would be shunned/killed and left in one of the tunnels forcing you to raise. Now it is thief killing thief; thief robbing thief and such!
Once apon a time the thiefs looked out for there own, elders helped youngers and the guild was over outsiders! Now it is marry a thief for protection! Then stupid thief has back of wife who most likely is on another alt account.
As far as the fade weapons on the table well they are thief weapons maybe allow them to be stole or maybe a said guild leader walks by and sees it and when they go deposit some money gets ambushed! As far as having them on a table in a non hostile area. Maybe certain items like that should remove the gods protections and open up thiefing in that room! So its a risk of your stuff getting stolen by having them IN your shop!No not open for anyone to steal from anyone but having stuff stole off your table like in old days!

I'm just going to call rosy lenses on all of this.
And say that A) if it's so awesome, recreate it, B) it wasn't awesome or it would still exist.
DR: Plat has a lot of this style RP for thieves; you might enjoy stepping onto that server.
