Once you've accepted a contract, you have to either deliver it or wait it out. That can be a real bummer when the game crashes. I've never lost merchandise like that (lucky me!), but I know other traders who have.

Incidentally, another way to get rid of expired merchandise is to hand the contract to the clerk. The clerk will throw a temper tantrum and get rid of the old stuff.
