Merchant Wagon Pulls into town. Player A purchases a cloak, Player A purchases a cloak, Player A purchases a cloak, Player A purchases a cloak, Player A purchases a cloak, Player A purchases a cloak, Player A purchases a cloak, ad infinitum. Put whatever item you want to in place of the cloak.
Where is all this junk going to eventually go as time progresses, and every merchant, festival thing that appears is bought in 10s by several players? Nothing wears out, nothing gets too small, and the items that are lost to chance and death hardly compensate for real threat of item deluge in the lands.
Maybe that is the plan to, because as your vault fills up, you have to get another character to open another vault. Seriously though, I think we have a problem with our state of item distribution and lack of services in the realms. Nothing is novel anymore.
There needs to be a limit on things, or there needs to be a major catastrophe for removing the items in the land, or BETTER yet, the GMs need a better idea than just purchasing more items to remove coins from our bank accounts. I have a list of things I would pay for that don't include more "STUFF" or another Alteration. (Heck, the premade merchant items and fest items are fine as they are without ANOTHER alterer to tickle another players personal whim who probably again just wants it done so he/she can turn around and sell it for MORE coins).
I would love to hear other ideas on how to remove our coins without any of the past venues (alterers and merchants).

Spellbooks are fulling that mission with 7 of the 10 guilds--or at least will, once they release them beyond the WM guild.
Burglar or Locksmith cases would do the same for the Thieves.
<books with guidelines on the art of disarming various types of traps,etc--rather than spellbooks--with compartments for the materials harvested from various traps>
For the Barbarians--I dunno...maybe a critter compedium?
For Traders--Trader-owned boats would certainly make some folks relinquish more'n a few coins. Especially if the boats made travel to the islands more convenient and less time-consuming for everyone.
For estate-holders, allowing people to buy and furnish more than 1 house per account <perhaps as a LTB type thing--1 additional char per acct per year as a Premium member> would certainly entice folks to spend coinage.

From what I have been able to gleam Boats will not be trader only. It will be Very expensive even for the top 2% of the barbs/paladin standards. And they will be very dangerous. So boats seem as if they will be hunters toys and not a reasonably risky venture for the trader.

Been there dont that it dont wear out will never need a new one.
All these help drain money but at the rate its being drained its insignificant. Citizenship and other re-accuring "dues" would be a big help.
Maybe if we could pay more Citizenship taxes for more benifits. 4.5 plat a month for forgetting about petty crimes, cheaper NPC hospital healing, Guards watching our for your welfare a little closer........lots of things could be done. 12 plat a month for a special post title.......

Re: Limited Merchant Items, etc. on 08/19/2002 04:31 PM CDT
I am all for items requiring upkeep. If an item is precious to you, you have to pay to keep it nice and useful.
I disagree that unlimited items from a one time merchant is bad, because things like the janitor exist, people leave the game... stuff basically happens.
over time the items will become more and more rare. that is what turns it from a garanteed money-maker into an investment...
I would like to see more ways to invest in other players... The risk of the person walking/never paying you back would be balanced by the interest (and trading) you would learn. of course traders would be able to assess what type of credit risk a person is by apprasing them (the debt level that the person has) and the trader would be able to 'sell' the loans to non traders... defaulting on a loan would be concent... (Loan shark anyone?)
Of course loaning money would cost money, for the filing fees, disclaimers and other such mumbo jumbo. The part that would say if a loan was in default would be on the loan 'paperwork' that the trader or 'collector' had. and loans would be payable at the town hall collections office (for yet another small fee... sound like a check cashing place yet?)
I was also thinking that requiring people to have 'change' would be nice. if a person wants to buy a 12 gold item and has 2 plat, where does the other 8 gold in change come from? It would require that people keep a fairly large ammount of smaller denomination of currency on them at all times...
Also Coin Counting and con games where you try and mislead the person who you are buying from are much more common than out and out theft. I work at 7-11 (yet again) and we get people running with merchandise (or trying to) once a week, if that... but we get the con games regarding the ammount tendered and coins every day... and even the most expereinced cashier makes errors in change on occasion.
Services related to the coins could be offering change to the traders in the tents (for yet another small fee) Armored carriages that send insured deposits to the banks from the traders guilds, market tents, and eventually from the trader shops... of course the Carriages would be stealable, so f you do not insure your money the transport is a small fee, but if you do insue it, it is a moderate fee.(dependant on how much of a loss the carriage company is taking in the current quarter...)
The Tranfer of money within the province via armored carriage (only from the bank to the carriage office for the same fees) and alowing the transfer of money interprovincially utelizing the armored carriage system, but make the rate of exchange and the cost of transport much higher... basically I can see the armored carrages as having huge bullseyes painted on thier sides...
Of course for this to work the carriages would have to work like caravans and have regular runs that could be timed by the nefarious minded individuals umungst us...
anyhow it is just a thought... I hope you like it
yet another amungst a growing crowd...

I really like the idea of limiting the number of things a person can buy - let's face it, I have done the same thing in the past, bought 10 "thingies" to sell later for a nice profit. It would be a nice thing if it was the same as for drinks around the realms, once you have grabbed 4-5, it tells you that you have bought enough for now.
I realize people with multiple characters could still buy, but at least it would slow the item flood a bit. Especially with high cost items, maybe just be able to buy one of each?

I would pay double or triple my current citizenship taxes to be able to get my caravan on the ferry for free no matter how many crates. This would apply only to Traders with caravans who opted for this special citizenship offer.
I would pay considerably more to not have to feed my caravan. It would cost more at the beginning to rent the caravan, plus perhaps an extra fee for each crate, for the driver to use his own feed to give to the yaks. Or even a caravan-driver union monthly fee instead of a per-use fee.
I would pay a monthly Trader Guild fee to belong to a trader-only messaging system. The system would leave messages for other traders at outposts (even those traders that weren't logged on at the time). The next time the recipient went into the outpost, the clerk would say, "Zemon, you have a message from Mapache" and give him the message. Any trader could receive the message, but only paying members of this messenger club could leave messages.
I would pay a large monthly Trader's Guild fee to have a little trader-only club where we had our own gem-buyer, an NPC empath for minor road scrapes from spooking caravans, discounts on Trader items, maybe a little spa/bath to clean up, and perhaps a runner that would go to the bank for us during auctions.
These are some of the services I wouldn't mind paying extra for. I don't buy a whole lot of items, but I wouldn't mind forking over cash for these or other extra services.
Thanks!

I like Gossfords idea of paying for Titles. Now that is pretty realistic, with enough coin, you can attract the ears of Nobility.
I also like the idea of more services from your citizenship if you pay more aa month. I'd be willing on the top end of paying 10 plat a month for some really nice Citizen services, maybe tagging some post titles with that idea.
I like some of the other stuff mentioned to without going into specific details (simple is always better).

I would also like to suggest a coat of arms regristration fee for those who have purchased a high enough title. I have not read on how they wer issued historicly but IG there should be an initial payment for the regristration, then a monthly "tithe" to the local monarch. This Coat of arms would be unique to you in the realms for as long as you keep paying for it.
This coat of arms could be used in a variety of ways. Have it emblazoned on a shield (I go through shields like candy sometimes) by an NPC, Embroidery pattern...........

This probably wouldn't be too popular with premies, but make alterations shops open to the general public instead of just a LTB reward<ducks his head>. the cost would have to be sufficiently high enough so that every yahoo in the realms isn't getting his or her socks and leathers altered. This would pull some of the extra coin out of the economy and add some variety. I know, it's easier said then done.
On a similar note, and this kinda goes with what Gossford was saying about coat-of-arms, it would be nice to have a better selection from the engaver's and embroider's shops. No offense to whomever designed them but some of them are kinda lame. Honestly, what self-repecting paladin would go into battle with a bunch of lions lying under a tree engaved on his tower shield and a raccoon holding an ear of corn engaved on his field armor. Actually, overall the shops could use some inventory work done on them. I'm sure there are a lot of items that have been sitting in shops for years that rarely get bought. How many people go to Kaerna to buy a tarp? Maybe I'm ignorant, but I don't even know that they have an IG use. Sorry, didn't mean for my suggestion to turn into a rant
