Would it be possible (as in less than huge effort) to let traders begin to do sorcery while we wait for trader magic since its basically a self contained skill?

What do you mean by it is a self contained skill?

If I think about what's required to train sorcery you either need a to cast a spell from outside your native manasource or find a device that let's you do so (like a runestone). So allowing traders to train sorcery using this method would require them to be able to use mana and cast with it. Basically they need to be made magic users, and that seems to be half of the work, integrating the magic system into the guild. The other half would then be giving them spells of their own.

Well it seems like some work may have already been done with this. If you listen to a PM class from a moon mage, you learn lunar magic. If you listen to a PM class from anyone else, you learn sorcery.
