Why is this set at level 8? It's such an oddly specific level, why not 5? In most (i.e. not air) trees by 5 you've run out of 'ideal' novice spells, and want to hit the other elements.
I don't think it was intended for you to pick only one single-target TM, just not all of them.
If it helps, I recommend picking up one single-shot and one multi-shot, so at least you have some potential tactical use there.
That said, I no longer follow my own advice and just have Air Lash because I like the messaging best, and Geyser because I want Water titles.

Or take one that's pure physical, like Air Lash (slice and puncture) and one that does some elemental damage. I went back and picked up some spells I'd written off and actually found that pretty useful.
