I'm just curious if our weapon creation spells will also have spell battery features like Moonblades. If not, will they do anything other than create a weapon? I'm also curious if this will be available as an enchantment, but that's a discussion for another folder.
What kind of things would people like to see as other enhancements on our weapon creation spells? It would be neat if the weapon came with a node pre-loaded with an Augmentation spell from the Element you create it from, but that might be asking too much.

How about when a spell-created weapon is destroyed before the spell runs out it explodes and splashes everything at melee.
>It would be neat if the weapon came with a node pre-loaded with an Augmentation spell from the Element you create it from, but that might be asking too much.
That would be neat. It might also be interesting if you could add some elemental essence into the weapon itself if you cast it when you have an elemental transformation spell up.

I think it would be cool if WMs got a blank-template weapon like Moonblade (Frost Scythe?) with the crafting tie-ins and everything, only instead of acting as a spell battery, if could be aligned to do a moderate amount of additional elemental damage (fire, ice, whatever). Perhaps instead of weaponsmithing tie-in, it would be an enchanting tie-in.
Re: Magic 3.0 Weapon Creation on 01/04/2012 02:49 PM CST
I think the current plan is for each element to have a weapon (or class, not sure). For example, Fire Bow (bows) and Frost Scythe (edges) and Fist of Stone (blunts), etc. If you have Fire Bow and Frost Scythe, you're then able to make Frost Bows and Fire Scythes.
I'm sure the physical stats will have crafting tie-ins. I'm hoping there will be some additional elemental damage, as well as the spell battery. We're Magic prime as well as Weapon Secondary, so I feel like it's justifiable for us to have spell batteries in our magically created weapons. If not, I hope it's something that can be done in enchanting (and not just to weapons).

>>I'm hoping there will be some additional elemental damage, as well as the spell battery.
Doubtful it would be a spell battery AND do fire damage. Unless it did fire damage via enchanting, rather than additional physical damage via weaponsmithing.

The spell battery function is more a feat of metamagic. Clerics, for example, are also magic primary and weapons secondary, but their spell battery has nothing to do with weapons, whereas Moon Mages (weapons tert) have their battery in their magic weapons, mostly by virtue of Moonblade having already been a spell in their spellbook that needed more oomph.
That in mind, I think the question is not "does this make sense for our skillset?" but more "does this make sense for our theme?" It makes more sense for Clerics and Moon Mages, IMO, but I think an argument could easily be made for Warrior Mages too.

Honstly, I don't know how this makes more sense for Moon Mages to have a spell battery in a weapon. If anybody should have a spell battery in a weapon it's the most combat oriented magic prime guild. Our theme is combat magic, and I feel like a weapon that can store spells is the epitome of combat magic. Obviously this is just my opinion.

I know it's a long shot to get both. Chances are better it'll be equivalent to MC Steel weapons with those techniques and elemental damage with some enchanting techniques, and not be a spell battery. I hope the spell battery feature is something that is enchantable instead of just in a couple of spells.

Keep in mind, the rational for the moonblade having nodes was the thematic image of "a mage's staff."
It had nothing (or little) to do with skillset or anything else.

This. Like I said, the fact that it's inside a blade is circumstantial. The "spell battery" aspect of it is the important part, and Clerics and Moon Mages have more esoteric magic design than Warrior Mages. Though, again, I could see Warrior Mages with that spell function if it's designed with a Warrior Mage flare (haha see what I did there?).
On reflection, I don't see why it can't be spell battery, fire damage, and better appraisal with smithing techniques all in one. One of the whole points of magic 3.0 is that all spells are not created "equal," so you could always just make it cost 3-4 spell slots, and it would be worthwhile.

I'm starting to wonder if different elements will have different bonuses beyond just the type of weapon. There is no Aether damage, so what extra would you get out of the Aether weapon creation spell? I think a spell battery would make sense for that spell, and maybe Air would make the weapon lighter. Fire, Electricity, and Water would do respective damage types extra (Cold for Water).

As of right now (and I don't think it's going to be changing in 3.0), there's no such thing as anything but slice, puncture, impact, fire, cold, and electrical damage. Earth, wind, aether, etc spells are normally a mix of two or more of those types.

Yeah, but I will be really disappointed if the weapon creation spells that the GMs won't discuss yet and aren't making the initial 3.0 release just summon a weapon. If it were that simple, I would hope that they would make the release.

Are we talking about like five different spells or what? Cause letting you summon a forge-quality weapon that you can then align to six different elements for completely different effects (fire damage, spell battery, lighter equipment, electric-stuns on hit, petrification of hit, huzzah!) is worth, like, 10 spell slots. I think you might be over-reaching there a bit!

That's how it sounded to me. We already have FoS and FrS. The original proposal I heard was for all the spells you had, you could switch the types up and choose the element. I don't see the purpose if they do nothing but create a weapon and the description is fluff. If it's just fluff and doesn't affect the stats of the weapon or have extra bonuses, they could all be in Aether and you could change the element it appears as.

The weapon creations will almost certainly not make the initial Magic 3 release, unless I'm suddenly sitting around with nothing else to do, but they're on my short list for immediate attention afterward.
They will not function as a spell battery.
They will be able to do elemental damage when appropriate.
They will have crafting tie ins.
Currently I have plans for Fire, Earth, Water, Electricity, and Hylomorphic versions.
Both Moonblade and the elemental weapons are going to be spell-slot heavy to fully unlock. As a point of reference, Moonblade will cost no less than 5 spell slots distributed across one spell and two metaspells to do everything.

I don't know. That was my original intent, but I need to see what things look like when the dust settles.
