Since old stand by (fire shard/gz) is getting nerfed back into the beta-age, I'm wondering how our upper tier spells teach currently. Would any of you use Fire rain or Chain lightning or Ball lightning (does that teach target?) to train TM right now? I have fireball and it doesn't do me any good, except when I want to make sure I stun something when I hit it in the face. Even then AEL + AP (yay ap) seems to do the trick better for lower cost.
I'm just concerned that our higher tiered spells aren't really for every day use, but only for rare occaisons and showing off. If fireball and lightning bolt taught TM the way that our first tiers did, I would be ecstatic. Something that would be nice to see in second tier spells is, after you reach the "optimal skill range" they start being more useful than your first tier spells in that they are more mana efficient, do more damage, and teach you better. Right now it takes me more mana, more casts, with less exp reward to kill a troll with fireball than it does with ael, a spell that isn't using multiple shots.

I don't have ball lightning. Fire rain and CL teach TM well. If there's 5-6 bristlebacks in my room I can lock quicker with those spells (assuming mana is there) than with fire shard. Problem is if you're hunting bristlebacks in mriss or after 3-4 am its hard to get that many pec's.

I use Fire Rain pretty regularly in leucro.
I dance with two, third one comes in it gets GZ.
More than one extra(Usually if more than 1 extra comes in, it's a bunch all at once) I switch to Fire Rain. Clears the room, teaches TM, and generally works well.
Fire Rain is, however, pretty pointless with only a few critters in the room.
It's also fun to cast in front of the guild. ::hums::

Victory by any means necessary.

2 36 prep fire rains in a room swarmed with fendryads and swampies teaches well, dependingon the amount fo critters it may take a third to lock tm up but it takes no longer then 10 minutes to lock tm if the swarming is good<ie 5 or more critters. though swampies in the hummock and their shield is really a pain. i'll tingle all i can before raining on them .
