Ok, I have 22 ranks in TM. I hunt ship rats and I charge AEL at 2, which, up until I hit 20-or-so ranks in TM, it used to easily lock TM. Now at 22, actually started having trouble at 21, I can hardly push TM to thoughtful...like somebody turned off the experience valve. What should I do? Charge spells with more mana? Would I then be required to train pow perc more? Or is this an issue of ship rats only training TM up to around 20ish?
Thanks

I'd look for bigger prey. Out the north gate of Crossing are pothandits and trolliks (or something like that), I've found they're a good second step before goblins.
Training power perception is always a good idea and definitely makes using TM easier. Good luck!

Pothanits, trollkin and badgers. Start with the badgers, they are the easiest to handle. Poths are next, then trollkin are the most difficult, but very uncommon in the general hunting area, except for the rare one that wanders from their area out into the regular area.
I would advise getting your defenses and main weapon up to around 20 or so, to reduce their chances of hurting you seriously and to improve your chance of hitting them.
One nice bit around the area is that it is a rare occurance when you ever get more than three creatures on you, unless you deliberately advance on the extras. If you see me up there, I am always happy to teach a class (in whatever).

Definately go to bigger prey- you've pretty well capped rats. I trained my magics and defenses in pots and badgers, and the occasional trollkin, until about the mid 40s. Then I moved to water sprites and lipopods. These days I use other prey, and goblins for boxes.

Oh yes, another hint: While AEL is a good spell and indeed best for some preys, I've found Gar Zeng to usually be the best trainer.

I use ael on non armored critters or target non armored parts of there body due to it being a great spell in lower mana areas, but usually i use GZ on armored critters.
