I'm trying to decide a few different weapon/armor things, and was wanting some Warrior Mage opinions.
First: The 4 armor set up I use and always rave about has got me wondering. The current setup has LP on the hands and neck, HP on the head/eyes. But I'm beginning to notice that LP is edging ahead ever-so-slightly. I don't want this. I'd much rather have HP being the lead skill. But I'm also noticing that I don't really lock LP or HP as quickly as I lock LC and HC. I'm thinking that maybe changing the LP pieces I wear to HP would result in 3 armor skills that are sitting in high mind states, instead of 2 in high mind states and 2 in mid mind-states. My ultimate goal is to be able to be diverse - if I really need the extra protection, I can wear full HP. If I want the TDP gain and am at a spot where I can learn armor well without too much worry, I could wear the three-armor setup. I'm also thinking now that perhaps in the long run the TDP gain from 4 armors would even out with 3 armors, the reasoning being that I would gain ranks more quickly with that third armor staying in high mind states.
Second: Ranged weapon. I'm currently training longbow, and have 99 ranks. I use a capped longbow and basilisk arrows, and really love the damage that longbow does in relation to the short roundtime. But since I'm not a very stealthy fellow, I'm wondering if switching to an Xbow might be a better choice. I have around 60 ranks in HX, 2 slurbows and 20 quadrellos. I keep my shield very close to even with parry, so facing an at-level creature with HX (or at-level character, as the case may be) should be pretty feasible. But also, I'm wondering about switching to LX. If I was in a ranged fight with another character, would the difference between HX/small shield and LX/large shield be really noticable? I can hold a large shield and load an LX, right?
Third: Swapping to large shield. I've got 2 of the best large shields in game: lion shield and dragon-scale shield. I pretty much just arm-wear my croc-skin buckler, and it seems to protect just fine currently. At what point should I think about switching to one of the others? Just when I'm hunting over my head? I haven't checked my evasion penalties with the large shields, but when the one I choose wouldn't be getting use, it has a sig. plat ring that it can go in, so burden won't be a huge problem. My strength is 25 if that matters, disc 30. I'm currently working on increasing my strength.
Thanks for any help!!

im not so certain about my answers but ill take a shot.
I like 4 armor set up. 1 primary for against mean things and 4 secondary for TDPs and backtraining.
I like HC helm. Leather mask and leathers. LP Aventail. HP gauntlets. works great.
second.
You completely ignored the best ranged weapon. Short bow.
Load my arrow.
Roundtime: 1
Fire.
Roundtime: 1
a nisha short bow will machine gun down swarms and lock up faster and easier then any other weapon skill.
If you want to PvP, then going with HX makes sense for obvious reasons. im fairly sure LX is crap. useful if you have some guild specific bonuses, but basicly your waiting 8-11 seconds load time to do longbow damage in crossbow form. Longbow is good for people who snipe, it would tkae a hell of an arguement to make me belive Longbow is more effective hunting or training tool then Shortbow.
I belive medium shields become more effective around 40 ranks. And large shields around 80. tho it may be 100 im not sure. I know my barb does much better useing a towershield over a medium shield, which is the largest he can arm-wear.
hope it helps.

I've got 140 in shield. Just wondering what the point is if I'm learning/fending off attacks so well as is with small shield. I did enjoy short bow, but the general consensus, which your opinion doesn't seem to be a part of, is that shortbow is fairly useless in relation to longbow. But then again, the people that are saying that might be talking in relation to trying to one-shot something from hiding.

your right SB doesent get much love from the community but i think there are a few reasons.
Most people dont know how to write decent macro's to take advantage of the low roundtime. They need the 3 seconds of load time to keep up with their typeing. Also not many people know or remeber that there are cheap shortbows out there that drop the loadtime by a second. And that you can load arrow from you hand to drop another second. So they may not be aware you can load a nisha shortbow in only 1 second. Now i cant attest to higher ranks. But at 120 ranks it still blasts through anything that an edge at that rank would, but alot faster, and mindlocks alot faster.
Then we warmies have all sorts of useful things like icepatch. you cast one of these, you can get in 2-3 longbow shots in, each one a crit, or 6-7 shortbow shots, each one a crit. I can go icepatch over an adnaf and pepper him with shortbow while only having 120 ranks in it, needless to say it locks me right away.
How good shortbow is is almost buggy and unfair and im almost scared to talk about it lest it suffer from nerfing.

fails not.
f1 ~ /xget arrow/rload my arrow/r
f2 ~ /xfire/r
f3 ~ /xface next/r
when snap fireing it doesent matter if your left hand is full. it only stops you from aiming. so you can F1 F2 over and over again to kill something. then f3 to face something alive. then f1 and f2 over and over again. after a while you will have enough arrows on the ground that you will be picking them up and loading them 1 at a time, letting you aim if you want.

For a Warrior Mage, I say forget bow. You have TM. Pick up HX or LX, and maybe even HT for extra.
There's no real reason to use a longbow (since you can't use it with shield) when you already have TM as your best attack. WMs are survival and armor tert, so my suggestion is to not penalize your defenses even more by wiping shield out of the mix.
With your disabling spells and TM, you really only need to have something like HT or HX to fire/throw a shot here and there for extra damage. A lot of people think HT is great for a WM since it's speedy compared to crossbows, and regardless of whatever weapon you use, it won't be as deadly as your TM.

Training weapons to be 'useful' is kind of a silly idea as a WM. If there is ever anything you cannot kill with your magic(non-corporeal undead excluded) you're in real trouble and mundane weapons would only do the trick if your magics are very seriously lacking. Training extra weapons for TDPs is not a bad idea, but training extra weapons for TDPs at the expense of advancement is a bad idea, as training your primary weapons and defenses and magics and circling will always yield more.
If you're going to train a bow train LB or CB, short Bow sucks. It has a much harder time getting past shield than other bows. I guess it might be ok as an extra weapon for TDPs since its fast but it becomes difficult to train on heavily armored creatures, or anything using shield.
If you're going to use a crossbow I would recommend LX over HX. LX can be used 1-handed so you can keep your bolts in your left hand, cutting a second off each shot, and its faster to begin with. HX is a very bad weapon to train for TPDs because it is so slow.
If you're using thrown go with HT. LT has attrocious damage and is only slightly faster.
Shield: I use a croc shield for training because it leaves a free hand for cambrinth, skinning, etc. for PvP I use a jousting shield.
Just my thoughts.

Stop giving away our secrets!
Kidding of course. I'll tell anyone that asks there is no better combination than HX/Shorbow. Of course I can snipe so that might skew the results, but all hail the machine gun nisha and capped arrows. It's like the old log with aim. Of course we know what happened to HT... :(

On armor: Remember that armor learning is no longer based on armor hindrance, but on armor coverage, so having an armor cover more area increases how much learning you can gain from it. Somewhere in the general armor folder is some fairly wel-informed speculation on general area covered by armor.
