The GSWiki says that it is available to all professions and uses a 2Hand Pole Arm or quarterstaff or runestaff.
BUT that it requires at least 15 ranks of the appropriate skill.
.
Does it, in fact, require 15 ranks of 2Hand in order for a spellcaster to trip with their RuneStaff (for which they are training magical ranks)?
Or does their "eight-per-level" count as sufficient--once they pass 15th level, or 10th level if they're doing 15 or 16 per level--since that is "equivalent to 1x training" (also per the GSWiki)?
Also: is it possible to get a "successful result" (and trigger a flare) against an opponent that is already prone?
(Looking at two specific tactics, both for a Tonis-Bard: using my mana-flaring staff for a quick refill, and using a Sonic staff for abusive [damage] flaring goodness.)
Or does the CMan work only against standing targets?
Lastly: does it work against undead? (Looking at Reim.) I have seen 'stunned' results against most creatures there, so they appear to be corporeal (not the Rares, obviously).
Either one of the Tonis-uses would be good against the Emperor & Empress, for example....

>Does it, in fact, require 15 ranks of 2Hand
You need 15 ranks to utilize the normal TRIP verb with your weapon. It has to be 15 ranks.
I'm not sure if rune staffs can TRIP (though the wiki does say they can if you train in the proper weapon class they're under - so THW in this case), but I know you can TRIP with a quarterstaff.
>Also: is it possible to get a "successful result" (and trigger a flare) against an opponent that is already prone?
To my recollection, I haven't hunted my polearm bard much lately (he likes using the CMAN TRIP), but if a target is prone (in this case, prone would be considered KNEELING or flat on their back), you cannot further TRIP them. If you can't trip them, your weapon isn't going to magically flare without some sort of action that directly hits them.
>Lastly: does it work against undead?
I never tried against undead, but it probably follows the normal logic that if you're weapon isn't blessed or sanctified, you won't cause harm to the undead.
As for the effectiveness of using just the TRIP verb over the actual CMAN TRIP - I couldn't say. I'm not that bored to test. My guess would be the TRIP verb alone would be roughly the same equivalent of rank 1 on the CMAN TRIP. I also haven't compared the effectiveness of going from RANK 2 to RANK 3 on the CMAN, but it feels like there's a slight improvement in my success with it.
Now, is it really worth the 18 CMAN points I've sunk into the CMAN TRIP? Probably not. I think 2 ranks would probably be just fine and I could put those 9 CMAN points (from Rank 3) towards something else that may be more useful for him....but whatever. He hunts just fine right now since he's not too high of a level yet.

Well you know... since the Test server is still open...

Yeah, to heck with that idea.
Even with Tonis running (to turn an 8s RT into merely 5s), it's still a hell of a lot faster to just keep casting--at 3s, and able to walk away during it--and get the payoff from Ensorcel + Mana flares. <dismiss>
Still, thanks for the answers!
