Was there a stealth update to the slash critical table? I'm seeing subtly different phrasing than say, what I've been seeing since like '95.

For example, "Terrible slash to side rips through abdomen crosswise! Death can be SO messy." Never seen that before.

Yeah, I've noticed too. Some others I've seen:

Slash to lower back rips out kidneys! Death is slow and painful.
Gruesome slash opens the forehead and spills some grey matter!
Weak diagonal slash catches left knee, dislocating it.
Strong slash to right leg exposes thigh muscles. Not a pretty sight.
Wicked slash to chest explodes heart on impact! Sickening.
Crossing slash to chest catches an elven marauder's attention with a flourish!

Found another one:
Feint to the head then a quick flick at the weapon hand leaves a nasty little cut.

Some of these changes have just been subtle rephrasing, but I really like this one and the "with a flourish" one that add new flavor and paint a more intricate picture!

I'll take a deeper look but it appears that the majority of the messages have been modified. The primary change is the elimination of most, but not all, of the variables.

For example

Old: Deep slash to the [target]'s right forearm!
New: Deep slash to right forearm!
Old: Feint to the [target]'s head! Quick flick at its weapon hand! Nasty cut to right hand!
New: Feint to the head then a quick flick at the weapon hand leaves a nasty little cut.
Old: The [target] twists away but is caught with a hard slash! Back is broken!
New: Opponent twists away but is caught with a hard slash to the back!

Are modifications to other tables anticipated? Any GM care to respond?

It's a conspiracy I tells ya. I haven't had the opportunity to test with other weapons- but so far as I know they're still the same.

Preceding that, maybe it was just a stealth change for clarification in the slash critical table. If it's something more dev-wise though that'd be great. Some of the new language doesn't match up with the critical rank though.

The Slash Critical Table has been updated on GSWiki.

https://gswiki.play.net/Slash_critical_table

- There were over 100 changes primarily to the messaging.
- I bugged the Left Hand, Rank 1 messaging which indicates an injured weapon hand but should read left or off-weapon hand.
- I don't believe any damage values were changed with this update. I didn't check status effects.
- Many of the secondary criticals were removed. E.g., a Rank 7 chest critical had, prior to this update, both an L3 chest and L2 back injury associated with it. The L2 back injury has been eliminated.

It looks like this was the result of an attempt to fix a typo, which had the unfortunate result of accidentally resetting the damage table back to its initial values as of 1995. ;) I've restored the modern version of the damage table.

Too bad it didn't reset flares to 1995 damage levels. :)

Better than rain or rippling brook,
