Having been told in the past that the reason an alter or some other nonsense was not allowed in game because it was a medieval fantasy roleplay game and setting, so out of genre things are not allowed. The following makes me crack up every time I see it while doing child rescue tasks for the adventurer's guild.

>A young elven child sniffs, "I wish I had my teddy bear with me! He could protect me against anything!"

Well, I am sure the teddy bear COULD, if teddy bears were indeed around during medieval times, which they were not. The term teddy bear first came about approximately in 1906 because of Teddy Roosevelt. The guy liked to kill bears. The name stuck, and in the United States (and possibly now worldwide) the term 'teddy bear' arose. So every player who has heard that line during a child escort task is getting dosed with extremely out of genre messaging.

Oh, heck, the out-of-genre charge is the biggest crock of garbage purveyed here over the years. It doesn't stop the merchants from peddling just about any out-of-genre item imaginable, just as long as some GM or another wants it to be out there. Handflowers, 19th century skating rinks complete with popcorn vendors and Zambonis, facial piercings and full sleeve tattoos mirroring contemporary fads, Appalachian dulcimers, Warhammeresque spiked armor, the whole nine yards.

Meanwhile, a great many PERIOD alters have been turned down over the years on the grounds that some GM or another doesn't perceive it to be medieval. Top hats? They weren't invented by Abraham Lincoln; the first examples date from the 14th century. I had the devil of a time getting a quilt passed, and the oldest quilted item yet discovered dates from 5000 BC -- and has many examples thereafter.

All in all, this was a battle lost a long time ago. You're better off just not letting it get to you than otherwise.
