GAZE with no argument defaults to the 'gaze fondly' messaging. Would it be possible to change that to default to the 'gaze normal' messaging to be a little less jarring when flubbed? :D

One of the tricky things about editing existing verbs is that you can add, but you can't take away. Somewhere, this is someone's favorite feature and that person would be negatively affected by changing the default. GAZE NORMAL is a style option that will allow you to bypass the gendered default messaging.

The "default" gaze messaging (fondly at a character of the opposite sex/in awe at a character of the same sex) existed on its own for many years before the modifiers were put in game. "NORMAL" doesn't actually mean "default" and is a bit confusing due to the term. It was added in several years back to help everyone use a modified gaze to bypass the default.

Yes, I too have played this game for more than a few years.
Gazing "normally" should be the default. That's why it's called normal. When a player types in "GAZE PERSON", their character should gaze at that person. Not check them out just because they're the opposite sex, not become awestruck, they should just gaze.
That fact that "normal" it is not the default is only for historical reasons, not because it's good verb design.

<<That fact that "normal" it is not the default is only for historical reasons, not because it's good verb design.>>
Gaze normal is a much newer iteration of this verb, one added for the RP convenience of the players.
The fact that it defaults to fondly is because when the verb was invented, that was the only option.
It's slightly inconvenient for us to type 'normal' at the end of our gaze verb for RP reasons, but as Vanah explained, it's incredibly far more inconvenience to revamp the verb.
I think in this case we resign ourselves to aliases or six extra keystrokes and thank our lucky stars we have GMs like Vanah constantly enhancing our verby experience.

The game has changed by leaps and bounds since GAZE was written. Two new classes were released. Four new races were released. Bards got spells. Empaths got a new spell circle! GS3 changed to GS4 and the entire skill system, leveling system, and mana system changed. Languages changed. Combat maneuvers and stamina were created.
And yet we can't change an RP verb to make it better because a few people might be inconvenienced? That's ridiculous.

edit:
And again, as posters up-thread have pointed out, it's far worse RP-wise to gaze fondly or gaze in awe at someone by mistake when you meant to just gaze at them than it is to just gaze at them when you meant to do it fondly or in awe.
If a new player saw someone gaze at an NPC of the opposite sex, and then tries to gaze at it themselves, they'll gaze fondly at it. There's no reason and almost no precedent in GS verb design to expect that. It's terrible design being imposed on new players to make old players' lives mildly easier.

>all we need is the ability to gaze SET normal so that it stays that way
...all you need is for someone to completely recode the verb? Oh sure, why not!
GAZE now has a GAZE SET NORMAL option that will allow you to simply gaze. Also, GAZE SET PROFESSION as a sorcerer will let you shift your eyes to not just people, because I always wanted to do that. And if you are a sorcerer who hates shifting eyes, enjoy GAZE SET NORMAL!
If you don't opt out, the verb will continue to work as it has historically, with the profession and gender-based language.
