Many people use the "recite" verb as a means to announce something.

There's a time and a place to use such verbs in order to draw attention to something; a good example would be in large group hunting situations (warcamps, invasions, etc). "Recite" works mechanically, but it just doesn't seem a good fit for all situations with respect to intent and roleplay.

It seems to me that the framework is already there to make an addition.

Hunter announces:

"Take care, mind the shroud."

I know that in the grand scheme of things this is minor, but I thought maybe I could drop a bug in someone's ear for later.

One change I'd love to see for both recite and sing (and any other similar verbs ever implemented, like announce) is for them to echo in the "Speech" window in StormFront, like anything that is expressed via SAY or WHISPER. I've found the speech window to be invaluable during invasions and other instances of high screen scroll to keep track of who said or whispered what. Recite is one of those things that is unfortunately not echoed.

I am definitely one of the abusers of recite in crowds and would love an announce verb like this.

Recite doesn't go into the conversation window, either.

In a crowd ... I find it even more annoying than the existing noise because of this. I do not understand why people think it helps. It is off the screen faster than you can blink and you do not have it to reference in your conversation window.

Anyway, so many of my pet peeves all in one thread!

There IS a speech verbiage thing for announce, you know. If people used it, I would just highlight it and make it a faux announcement bold thing!

So ... yes, it would be lovely for people who want to announce things not to use recite. Especially if the alternative went into one's conversation window.

Or we could all try using the announce thing.

Well, it helps me, and many others, in the situations I mentioned; in fact, as much as it's used, I'd say it's a big help, even despite rapid screen scroll. When I'm in an invasion or in warcamp with a group, I'm focusing my attention one place, one window - combat. In regards to screen scroll, Highlighting Hunter announces, "<Fill in various options here>" wouldn't help in this regard. I can't imagine flipping my eyes back and forth from story to speech in these cases; I'd never see it, even if it were highlighed in neon pink and yellow if it were going to the speech window (or even in the combat window).

But really, none of that is neither here nor there. The fact remains that people use the recite verb in ways that don't equate with what a recitation is. It's been this way for years and I'm willing to say there's no way to stop recite from being used this way other than the next logical option - introducing a different verb that was in line with roleplaying but also filled this role. I would say most people would, over time, switch to it, allowing recite to be used in the correct situations.

That said, I knew there was an announce speech verb, and I actually meant to point out that I knew about it but forgot - mea culpa.

*I'm starting to feel like a snob about RP. I'm really not. I don't use the recite verb this way, but generally speaking I don't "fault" people who do. I just think there's a likely simple addition that would help in this regard.
