In an attempt to streamline some confusion with our naming policy, we updated some examples in POLICY 6. We've also added names that mimic items or creatures to the list. This has always been visible on the GM side, but not on the player side.

As a side note, we are trying to have better procedures with dealing with names that are within a grey area in terms of badnames. The biggest culprits are in-genre fantasy names, compound words, and borderline similarities with OOG terms/names.

One thing I would add to Policy 6 is a clarification that a name generated by the name generator does not automatically comply.

IMO the biggest problem with these policies has always been inconsistency of application. It seems a badname is or is not whatever the GM on duty feels at time. Compound words? 3 word sentences have passed badnaming since the badname verb has been released.

There are quite a few names out there that I'd have changed if I could. But it is what it is. Bigger fish to fry.

Without trying to be confrontational about the naming policy, because of bigger fish, the implementation of the naming policy is bogus. When you have been made to change a name in the past and then continue to see names that are beyond reasonable log in on a daily basis, this is how it makes you feel as a customer:

*Obvious bad name joins the adventure.

"mutter"

*obvious bad name calls it a day

"I just don't get it"

*Obvious bad name joins the adventure

"That name has been around for years"

*Obvious bad name just got stabbed in the throat

"Why would they make me change my name when that name has been around for years?"

*Obvious bad name goes home for the day.

"Lots of swearing, cursing, negative thoughts and more reasons to lose interest in the game"

Even as I write this it get's my temper going, bigger fish.

A big thanks for taking the time to review the policy and update it, since I was complaining about it!

It is what it is. But the more specific the policy and the more examples should help to streamline the application.

One possibility for long-standing bad names is some way to let players voluntarily change a BADNAME. If people really hate the name Flail that much, I'd personally be fine to have it changed, for example. But as the player of a name which seems to go against one of the policies, I have no recourse myself at present. However, this opens a grey area of people being able to kind of rename themselves which is a can of worms not to be opened.

Agreed, Daid. Any name which doesn't meet the current standards, but was grandfathered due to age should be offered a voluntary chance to rename themselves as standing policy. Leave a note on their file, and once they're ready they can assist and get their chance to rename themselves. Putting them on the spot for a one-time chance likely wouldn't result in too many converts.

Clarification on two word (compound) names, naming generators, and using real locations, holidays, or events have all been added to POLICY 6.
