I've so far not been one to play with asking for harder or easier tasks. But my paladin does really well up-hunting, so I decided to try maxing out the request to make the tasks harder. That part has been going fine so far. But I checked KP and see:

>Each time you ask for harder or easier it adjusts the level range of tasks assigned by one level. Initially this is +5 to -5. If you ask for easier, it then will assign you tasks from -6 to +5. You will then get a 15% penalty to your AdG rewards. If you ask again for it to be easier, it will be from -7 to +5. You will then get a 30% penalty. This pattern remains consistent for the third time and then the fourth time you get an assignment from +5 to -9. You will get a 60% penalty at this point and it is the lowest level range you can have assigned.
>If you ask for harder from that point it will reverse the sequence of easier until you get to where you started from - at which point if you ask for harder you will get an assignment in the -5 to +6 range with no modification of your AdG rewards. Each time you ask increases the upper level until you get to the hardest level range which is -5 to +10.

Is it just me, or is it crazy that for asking easier tasks, you get penalized, but if asking for harder tasks, there is no change to the reward? This is very obviously imbalanced, and I don't really see the justification for it being lopsided. Does this make any sense at all? Is there any real benefit to asking for harder tasks besides at cap to get ones for liches, etc? I'll probably keep doing it anyway, since with a harder pool at my level and city it puts more undead into the creature pool I can get assigned, and uphunting undead is more favor. But getting better rewards when my character is assigned harder tasks would only seem fair to me.

The harder the critter the fewer kills are required. You get better loot, because a higher proportion of your kills trigger the uphunting boost. Provided you can take the critter, you get extra benefit from higher level tasks just by having them available.

If the game was decently balanced between professions, there might be an argument for more, but there's a huge imbalance between how easily different professions uphunt. You'd just be giving even more advantages to the overpowered professions. Its not an accident that you find it easy to uphunt with a paladin. Paladins are designed that way.

Sure.

But all those things work in reverse for the underhunting situation. Is the added asymmetry of the Adv guild really necessary on top of these inherent differences?

Most of the time yes and most of the time there is no point at all in doing easier tasks. However, if -6 tasks would be the only ones on offer
there is an advantage to asking for easier tasks and a penalty seems justified. I think the penalties are on the high side, but I don't see any reason at all for giving bonuses that would mainly help already heavily favored professions advance even faster.

Very very preliminary empirical data BUT!

Since cranking up to maximum difficulty, I've had three heirloom tasks.

First task, first creature.

Second task, first creature.

Third task, third creature.

It could just be I got super lucky, but I've never gotten that lucky before. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

They're looting tasks. Unless you are contributing data in minotaur will fully pushed harder tasks and they had some..."other statistics"?

I alaways do bounties at max difficulty and have not seen this type of luck with heirlooms when at the max end of my range on critter or area searches. However, maybe I have just been unlucky, you have been lucky or somewhere in between.

It's tough to say, but certainly my luck hasn't been as good as those ones I first posted in the mean time.

Maybe some undetermined time from now I'll parse my log files when I have enough statistics to make anything close to a meaningful conclusion to topic.
