Am wondering do I have to tell my companion to leave before I log off to save the infinity I gained with him from that play session? I heard while back that someone suggested that. I been doing just that but noticed that he's not happy to leave. Worried that am actually losing favor then saving it. Can anyone clear this up for me if they know.

Yes. Telling the companion to leave before you log off is basically what tells the system to "save my progress from this play session" when gaining affinity.

Interesting, I only remember having to tell the companion to leave after I trained so that the companion would level up. I do not ever remember having to do it for affinity reasons.

Any time your companion changes (or needs to change, like when you level), you should dismiss them. When you get it groomed (bad word, but we don't have a better one), when you train, when you put spurs/collar/pawwraps/etc. on them, etc. Dismiss acts as the companion save function.
