I had been away for a few weeks and when I came back, Stormfront will no longer work for me. I tried re-downloading it, the site says I'm all good to go and things should be just fine, but it won't launch.

I log in, select my one character, select StormFront, click >>GO PLAY!, and that's where things just stop. It goes to the launching page and says:

"Preparing to launch GemStone IV Standard for the StormFront FE.

Having trouble?
Our site indicates you have ActiveX components enabled in your browser, and it is using these components to load the game. If you can not get the game to launch from the page, you may wish to try our desktop game entry."

I notice at the bottem left it says "Done, but with errors on page." When I check that, the message is:

Object doesn't support this property or method
playing_wiz.asp Line: 4181
Code: 0 Char: 2
URI: https://www.play.net/gs4/play/playing_wiz.asp

I'm on a PC laptop (no Mac love from this guy!) -- things worked just fine until recently. I've read the stuff on here, but it mostly seems Mac/Apple/iOS-focused.

Thoughts?

Oh, I dunno. . . we're pretty universal in our depredations around here.

Haven't seen that particular error before, but in general I'd recommend:

1) Clear all cache and temporary files, from your system. If you're a developer and have various dot-NET components installed to help with your work, ensure your attempts to log in are from a clean / partitioned browser.

2) Go to TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS, ADVANCED tab, and click on RESET. When prompted if you're really sure you want to do this, click YES. No, really. Trust me. (Stuck in "compatibility mode" is one of the most rapidly increasing issues.)

3) Try a different browser (Yeah, I know.) If, for example, Chrome works while IE doesn't, that gives us a whole new world of MSoft stuff to look at. :)

Thanks for the tips Doug.

- I cleared my cache and temporary files
- I'm not a developer so your suggestions on "dot-NET components" and such was pretty much Greek to me
- Haven't done the RESET option yet, but I haven't been in compatability mode so far. I'm hesitant because I know my settings had to be tweaked for other things on my system and I'm worried I'll cheese up more things when I'm trying to fix just one thing.
- I downloaded and tried FireFox. When I attempted to play, I was asked what the system should use to open my character's file. I select Stormfront when prompted and I get "Critical Error. Error loading skin from [storm.skn]"
- I also upgraded to IE9, thinking perhaps IE8 was getting old enough that it just wasn't cutting it. No change :(

I'm thinking one of the fairly recent patches that was pushed from Microsoft did something that has made this incompatable. My system is Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1.

Like I said, I played just a short while ago and things were grand, but the past 3 weeks or so have been a no-go.

It's very frustrating because I'm paying for something that I'm unable to use. :( The only option that works is the generic browser window and it's lacking so much that I'm not comfortable playing the game with it. :(

Side note: one of the things I now see says that it is optimised for IE 6. Could that be a contributing factor? Just spitballin here -- I'm not programming savvy at all.
