A request to add "hat" to the claspable nouns on 03/02/2011 09:54 PM CST

Hi, I recently acquired this great flimsy wizard's hat and it has a pocket that is stuck open. I spoke with GM Vanah tonight and she suggested that I post here to see if anyone would possibly help me in my quest to be able to close (and open) my hat and have any and all hats be able to have a clasp added to it. I was told that through these forums many of the nouns on the claspable list have been approved so I figured I'd put in my request for "hat" to be added to the list. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best, so if this is possible, please let me know! Until then, I'll wait patiently for this perhaps to make my day! Additionally, I think that hats should be allowed on the list of claspable containers because I've seen clasps on hats before and even buckles... (I think leprechauns have buckles on theirs!) Hope my two cents counts for something here if anyone will consider my request, I'd be very grateful! Thanks for your time!

Also, I know of wizard hats that have pockets that open and close too.
I just looked at some images of wizard's hats and some of them have clasps and buckles on them too!
Anyway, please let me know! Thanks!

Maynist was mistaken, I spoke with him tonight - he thought hats could have a clasp added.

So, still looking for an approval to put "hat" on the list of claspable nouns.

(Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best)

PS - Another reason I think clasps for hats should be allowed is because there is space inside the hat for a pocket and it can be "pinned" or "secured", "fastened" or even "buckled" so that that pocket closes. Guess I'm just hoping for the best and giving my arguments for the addition of "hat" to the list! I hope this message arrives in good fashion.

I'm mulling it over, but I have to say I'm not sold on the idea. Pocketed hats are sort of a silly concept when you think about it. I just can't shake the image of a really tall ten gallon hat with a cabinet built into the top and someone opening and closing a little door to get inside. On the other hand, pocketed hats exist already and I can't do anything about that, so I'm not sure that making them closeable makes the concept any more ridiculous. I'll keep thinking it over and check to see what Oscuro thinks.

GS has a lot of silly concepts that we accept and deal with, good and bad.

Cooldowns, a city that can only be teleported too (and teleportation in general), glasses with windshield wipers, a 3 lb belt sack you can stuff a 8 foot lance into, let alone sticking said lance into a pocketed hat.

Given all that, why not clasp it? I could care less, I got no skin in the game, don't shove any lances into my pocketed hats, but if your against that, are you against pocketed gloves? pocketed boots? Rings with an inmax of 10000? Where do you draw the line in what you are against or for?

I can't say for sure, because pocketed hats have existed since, well, since before I started playing, but I've always imagined that putting something into a pocketed hat actually meant you were putting it under your hat while you're wearing it. Not a "pocket" per se.

If that's correct, latching it doesn't really make a lot of sense.

And, I disagree with the NIR here -- even if the concept of a pocketed hat is silly, making it more silly isn't required.

Unless the pocketed hat in question is a stadium style beer-holding hat, in which case making it more silly is perfectly reasonable.

Hey, there's an idea for a cool item. A hat that can hold two items. If the items are drinkable, you can drink them without taking them out of the hat.

Putting a Jets logo on the hat might be a bit OOC, however.

I always just saw it as a pocket INSIDE (underneath) the hat itself, and it IS feasible that there be a clasp that fastens/pins that pocket's opening (of the hat) closed if added. I think that this is a realistic possibility, so please... consider!!!

I agree, that's how I've always seen it. It's like a stash pocket, which are definitely closed in some manner.

Just curious, I have no say on the matter, but why the need to close a hat?

Presumably, to prevent against pickpocketing. I'm not sure if it's possible to steal from a hat pocket, however.

There's always RP as a fallback answer. :)

The "hats" might be pinworn, so could be stealable. I believe the steal verb checks the slot and not the noun.

I believe only back, cloak, belt, shoulder and pin worn items are vulnerable to pickpocketers. Per GM Ildran's post some time ago.

So, if the hat was pinworn, then yeah, I could see the want for the clasping. But it really should be worn on the head.

For what it's worth, my opinion:

We should be able to make anything claspable as long as we can logically describe how the clasp would work. If a hat holds too much (eel skin hats) - that's not something we really effect. People with hats that hold a reasonable amount should be able to enjoy our services, and people with ridiculous hats (like that jerk that stole my eel skin hat in 1995) should get 'em too, I guess.

I don't think exceptional (or not quite exceptional but you get the idea) equipment should set the rules.

I sort of gave up as to the reality of what could and could not be pocketed when I was introduced to pocketed earrings. Compared to that, a pocketed hat is rather reasonable.
