Having an activated thought net (via crystal amulet or any other method) no longer provides a penalty to disarming traps or any other form of locksmithing. Locksmiths should feel free to use their regained rights to telepathically converse with other townsfolk.

After 10 years of lockpicking, during most of which ESP hurt disarming (and, yes, it was a significant penalty), I wonder how long it's going to take me to get in the habit of turning on the amunet now? I almost never turn it on anymore for fear I'll forget to turn it off, and therefore blow everyone up. Gotta actively work on changing that behavior...

Thanks, my friend, for making this change!

I haven't run my amulet for about 5 years now unless I was at an event or looking for someone. Too many -480 scale traps to take the risk.

The penalty wasn't actually that big; it was -5 to the roll, which is equivalent of losing your first rank of Disarm Traps training. However, its existence (regardless of magnitude) was so well known that it caused a lot of people to not use the amunet, which, as Tsoran pointed out, is not something we want to promote these days.

Besides, -5 could make the difference between a big smile, and a dozen angry people bleeding on the Dais.

That's weird. It seemed to make a difference to lm sense results far too often to just be -5. I had it down as about -25.

Nah, it's just -5. I was actually misremembering it and thinking it was -15 when I said it was quite significant. It's been years since I looked at the formula. But -5 can still make all the difference in the world. For a doubler, that's the same as two and a half levels worth of disarm ranks.

Good change. Perhaps the people who are constantly asking for a locksmith on the amunet will have a decent chance of actually finding one now.

Eh, tkaro root is widely and easily forageable. The negative issue with those sorts of items is the wait time before you can turn it back ON.

And if you use other methods to access the thought net, just putting a crystal amulet on and taking it off (or pulling it) will turn it off for you, too.

The original complaint revolved around being required to carry an amulet to use this function. Since we have the ability to STOP other spells, why not ESP? Yes, there are ways around it because it is natural that this is an ability that people would want to stop. Now that there is a widespread method of stopping these abilities, the theory is that it should be expanded to include ESP.

Yes, there are many ways that people have used to stop it. The proposal was that STOP could make these ways obsolete. It's like using the existence of the Dispel spells to argue against being able to STOP spells at all.

I didn't think anyone was arguing against including the STOP ESP option. I didn't even realize a proposal was made asking for the option to STOP ESP. It seemed to me that people were just offering ways to shut off ESP (at least, that's what I was doing).

If it's possible to STOP MEDITATING, which has a million and one other ways of being stopped, I don't see why anyone would be opposed to STOP ESP.

Why not include the witch boxes? Mino boxes can get rather high for their level and a good portion seem closer to what you'd find on plane three then one.

Because my rogue can pick plane 1 and 2 pretty reliably (except for witch and warlock boxes) so I wanted to know if mino boxes were similar to those so I know if I could pick them or not.

But you're saying mino boxes are closer to witch boxes so that answers my question too. Thank you.

Well, since this is the ROGUE folder, I'll assume you're playing a rogue, so if you want to know what you can pick, you should start learning Lock Mastery. You learn calipers pretty early on, so you can tell how hard a lock is before sticking your picks in it. Since there are always exceptionally hard boxes (outliers) from any critter, it's a very useful skill to have.

And if you're not a rogue, well, that's your problem. This is the rogue folder, after all.

>>>The original complaint revolved around being required to carry an amulet to use this function.

Oh right, wear/remove to turn it off. Yeah, its is kinda lame when you think about it. However, it really only affects those who use other means to access the amunet.

>>>Since we have the ability to STOP other spells, why not ESP?

Well, because it would make my ancient (subjective to definition) seashells sorta worthless, that's why!

>>>Yes, there are ways around it because it is natural that this is an ability that people would want to stop.

Stopping the voices in my head, oh yeah! I definately want a way to stop the voices in my head.

Oh wait, we're talking about Gemstone IV .... Nevamind.

>>>Now that there is a widespread method of stopping these abilities, the theory is that it should be expanded to include ESP.

Hmmm, interesting. I can definately understand the request and it's not actually a bad one.

However, I personally would rather that the GMs ignore it. ;-)

>>>Yes, there are many ways that people have used to stop it. The proposal was that STOP could make these ways obsolete. It's like using the existence of the Dispel spells to argue against being able to STOP spells at all. ~Becca

Wait, some people think that STOP ESP would make the other ways obsolete? Naw, it would just be another way to do it, it wouldn't make the original ways obsolete. Now what it would devalue is my seashells! If STOP ESP was actually implimented, who would actually want them anymore. Only diehard RPers would consider carrying one around.

Oh and not everyone has access to dispell spells, but we all have the ability to wear spells.

Just thought I'd toss that out there. ;-)

>>>I didn't think anyone was arguing against including the STOP ESP option.

Wait, I think I kinda am. <thinks>

>>>I didn't even realize a proposal was made asking for the option to STOP ESP.

Me either.

>>>It seemed to me that people were just offering ways to shut off ESP (at least, that's what I was doing).

I'm glad everyone did, I forgot how many ways there were to shut off the amunet.

>>>If it's possible to STOP MEDITATING, which has a million and one other ways of being stopped, I don't see why anyone would be opposed to STOP ESP. ~WYNTRFRSH

I'm not necessarily opposed to STOP ESP. I am however opposed to making neat, older items worthless. <cough> Seashells <cough>

Sadly, it would not be the first time something neat was made useless and/or devalued.
