Hi All,
Long time appreciator of locksmiths first time with the picks in my hand. This post on Krakiipedia from Ildran has some terminology I'm not familiar with:
_______
IOI: 4
Okay, here are the factors for success at each of the three tasks, by default, in a very particular order. Some traps may add their own modifiers. I don't think there's anything revolutionary here.
Spotting traps:
Helps - Disarm skill, Intuition bonus, Perception skill, Traplore, Presence, Self Control, good lighting, Lucksong (helps your luck)
Hurts - Trap discovery difficulty, wounds, amunet, Sounds, Interference, Weapon Deflection, bad lighting, fog, fumbles
Disarming traps:
Helps - Disarm skill, Dexterity bonus, Lucksong (helps your luck), Traplore, Self Control, good lighting, "modding down"
Hurts - Trap disarming difficulty, fumbles, amunet, Sounds, Interference, Weapon Deflection, bad lighting, fog, wounds
Picking:
Helps - Picking skill, Dexterity bonus, Locklore, lockpick, open rolls, "modding down"
Hurts - Wounds, not enough skill for the used lockpick, fumbles
- Consigliere Ildran, Shizlock Holmesplice

What's "modding down"?
Also, I biffed a scarab trap when I definitely should've had it the other day. Is the messaging for a fumble something about "something going horribly awry" or is that just the messaging for failing any disarm attempt? I didn't get the standard "You feel you've made a poor attempt" messaging.
Also, I asked this in my "So You Want to Be A Rogue" post but how much Arcane Symbols do I need to safely get scarabs into my pocket? And when does the AS come into place--it seemed without any AS but lots of disarm/percep I couldn't even see scarab traps, but my fumble came on the actual disarm (just knocking it out) where I assumed AS didn't play a part (I had 10 ranks of AS when I did it). Does AS ONLY play a part in spotting scarabs and then the skritch-skratch?

"something going horribly awry" |
That's a fumble.
As for "modding down", if you fail to pick a lock, but get close enough to see the lock number, your subsequent attempts will have a hidden bonus applied to your roll result. So, each time you see the lock number, it gets a little bit easier to pick the lock.
Similarly, for traps, every time you get the "little more luck" message, subsequent attempts at disarming get a little bit easier, too.
There is a limit to how much you can improve your chances with the 'modding down' process.

Getting close but not quite opening/disarming gives a bonus to subsequent attempts. This is called modding down.
>Also, I biffed a scarab trap when I definitely should've had it the other day. Is the messaging for a fumble something about "something going horribly awry" ?
Yes.
It isn't an automatic fail, just a large penalty to the roll. You can successfully disarm on a fumble if you are good enough compared to the trap.

Scarabs are hard to spot, but AS isn't required. If you want to scritch every time 25 ranks of AS will do it. So will lots of disarm skill.
