Well I have largely mastered the Bowels except for the occasional stone hand spell which instantly kills me and some stupid deaths (such as when I swim into the Bowels and a jarl immediately casts a spell that makes the air explode). Since I no longer have a high death rate in the Bowels, I figure its time to move to the Rift.

I have had some experience in plane 1 and did reasonably well at the time, but as Maynist is now 95 trainings I don't think I'll be hunting in plane 1. Please rescue my arse if needed and I'll keep an eye out for others.

I'd go straight for plane five. Mohrgan will be listening for that mental death cry, when he's about!

Hi Maynist!

The Rift is a pain in the posterior to navigate. Come to OTF; Guen is having a field day there, and they can always use a competent locksmith in town.

Well, ok, you might want to hunt with someone who can cast web, just to drop those griffins out of the sky; but everything else should have squishy heads for you to ambush.

"So, what does that green line on the graph represent?"

"Oh, that's the projection of a hypothetical offspring from a union between Sauron and Cruella de Ville; we use that as a baseline for determining character alignment."

Anyone who hunts the bowels apparently has a thing for painful navigation... so you'll feel very much at home in the rift.

It actually isn't that bad once you get used to it, though to be fair, I've probably spent more time getting used to it than most.

Here are some keys to success in the rift:

Study the layout of each plane before you hunt it.

Highlight the following words: stair, thread, void, maw, mirror, chute, fissure and door; as well as the exact description of the wandering box on 5. All of these items move about their respective planes. If you pass through one plane to get to your intended hunting location, or as you wander about the plane you are hunting, make mental note of where these items are as you pass by them. Sure they move, but they don't move all that quickly. It's likely that the next time you pass by, they'll be close to where they were before. This is valuable information if you get rifted from one plane to another, or if you are trying to rescue a corpse.

Stairs go down (to the next lower numbered plane, whether that's physically up or down is debatable). Threads go up in the same manner, except on plane five, where the thread goes down to plane 1. The maw takes you from plane 1 to 5. Doors and mirrors take you back to the sands, (but you can only drag a corpse through a door). The chute is on plane 4, and allows you to drop a corpse down to plane 2, (there are no doors or mirrors on planes 4 and 5, or in the scatter. The box on 5 is main way to get a corpse off of plane five if you can't do it with a profession-specific spell. If you drag a body into the box, TURN THE CRANK! Entry and exit to/from the scatter is via the fissure on 4.

Witches, warlocks and destroyers are immune to all forms of magical attack.

If you get hit by a void and are stunned, don't panic. They only fire off every 30 seconds I think it is, so you'll most likely be unstunned by the time it fires off again. You have plenty of time to move... probably.

If performing a rescue from 5 and not either field resurecting or moving the body out via professional spell, you'll need to do the following: drag the corpse into the box, turn the crank, climb the thread to 1, climb the thread to 2, climb the thread to 3, climb the thread to 4, find the corpse, drag the corpse to the chute and into it, climb the thread to 5, climb the thread to 1, climb the thread to 2, find the corpse, drag corpse to door and out to the sands.

Gems: a lot of the special rift gems to special things. I'll leave it to you to discover all the interesting properties that they have.

And lastly, kissing the sphere is purported to enhance verility and sexual prowess. Go for it!

A couple other tidbits that are useful.

Entering the sphere puts you into a grey nothingness area. Navigating north takes you to plane one, west to plane two, and east to plane three. South, I'm fairly sure, takes you to plane one.

Moving through the grey nothingness drains spirit. There are a couple of good ways to mitigate the effect of that spirit drain, mana bread, spirit recovery items, a particular gem all can factor into this. The core factor to rely on, however, is that there is always (presently) a set number of steps before one falls through the grey nothingness to the target plane. Learning what that set number of steps is, and stopping one shy to recover needed spirit is key (along with that mana bread, and associated spirit recovery items).

If you're in Voln, you can use Dreams to recover spirit on the planes (not in the grey nothingness), but beware -- you're automatically prone and in offensive. This will allow the denizens a great chance to make sure you don't wake up that trip. Make doubly sure you know where the voids are, as well.

Voids only occur naturally on planes one, two and three. There are two voids on each of those planes. Also, voids can be diverted with a proper cast of Elemental Dispel. I'm of the opinion (but offer no proof) that the diversion also leads to an extension of the next void 'attack', lengthening it to a minute. Wise wizards use this technique.

Vaespilon will cast implosion, which without a target, become voids of limited duration. When moving around plane five, keep that in mind.

Man, these geezers love to talk. Just kill stuff and don't die.

You're welcome.
