Thought I'd share an idea I had for a weapon. How about selling a thorned quarterstaff at the next merchant event? It could just be a spike-flaring staff whose messaging looked like thorns.
::shrug:: Nothing spectacular, but neat enough that I might roll up a Druidic ranger to use it. There could also be limited numbers of entangle-flaring staves or somesuch.

I'd buy one, but I think spikes on a quarterstave make very little sense.

Technically I believe they were used more like a mace than a quarterstaff in the martial arts sense at any rate. Some did exist though, typically however I believe they were staves with steel blocks on either end with spikes coming out of the steel blocks. Lots of momentum when swung, and acted very similar to an oversized mace at any rate I believe.

>>We have daggers that shoot mechanical spikes.
Daggers have a handle and a blade, staves are pretty much one long piece of material.

Well, I'll agree to disagree. I think a quarterstaff should be one of the less meddled with weapons simply in terms of of its simplicity in combat. It's just a big stick that can be gripped in any number of ways. We can already use it with TRIP and it provides some of the better maneuver bonuses in the 2hander group.
You can already find a flaring staff, though, so I guess spikes/thorns can't be too far off...

Yeah. I just thought it'd be a nifty item that could allow for some neat RP and makes a simple yet effective weapon even more useful by augmenting the crush damage with piercing damage. I guess I just don't see any reason not to make it ::shrug::

I'm all for any reason to encourage the use of quarterstaves.
I'd just rather the weapon base get some special combat functionality, like a main-gauche or sai provides when held in the left hand. Since it is very much lacking in terms of offensive ability, it would be nice to see a quarterstaff deliver some type of defensive bonus.
But maybe I am too much in awe of the ninja turtle known as Donatello.

Indeed, and they have a pretty decent maneuver bonus, too. When Nodyre used twohanders I WSPEC'd in quarterstave base so as to make them even more useful when subdual striking, tripping and cheap shotting.
