Are there many of these around? I know it's kind of like crit weighting a mack truck, but I thought I'd ask the question. And for what it's worth I agree with the folks who think it really has no place in a game where we don't even have mounts. A lance on foot should be pretty worthless.
Be that as it may, I just had one made out of razern (lightly weighted I presume), and thought I'd ask the question.

>>A lance on foot should be pretty worthless.<<
It's a footman's lance, not an 18 foot Macedonian cavalry Sarissa or a midieval knight's lance. Probably somewhere in length between a Greek Hoplite's spear and a Swiss pike.
Now, the fact is that these weapons historically were used in mass formations for best efficacy, but that's another story. Yeah, ok, an individual using a lance like this alone would be in trouble if his first attack missed, since the opponent would be able to rush inside his guard, but hey! This is an abstract game combat system!

Stealing my line about abstract combat game are ya! Part of the problem is that the actual footman's lance as you noted was a formation weapon and actually a naginata, glaive or even a halberd should be a "much" better weapon damage wise in comparison.
Instead we are stuck with the footmans lance/pike being this deadly weapon. It ain't right but what can ya do.

But Jim, are you sure we want to bring reality into this? If so none of your characters would even exist. And if it were up to me, the only races able to effectively use claidhmores would be humans with high physical skills and giants. That list of "reality checks" would go on and on. So yeah, personally I see the lance as large two-handed spear similar to that one from the movie in the 80s I think Dragonhunter or something.

The logical extension to that is to build scaled weapons, then [grin]. There's no reason that a dwarf couldn't use "a dwarven claidhmore" with different stats than "a giantman claidhmore." Then halflings could use a human broadsword as a two-handed sword, but with less efficiency than a halfling-designed two hander...

I agree it's one of those give and takes Stealth, lances just have been a personal peeve of mine from day one is all. The halberd, naginata would be better individual combat weapons versus that huge as long pike/lance weapons. :shrugs:
As to the claymore well the flamberge is longer the claymore is quite a bit shorter than folks realize compared to some of the huge two handers from the european mainland. Personally I also thought that the claidhmore shouldn't have the wieghting that it does and have stated so before.

It was 'DragonSlayer'
And no, we shouldn't harp too much on reality, but some would be good

>get pike
You remove a pink pearl-pommeled vultite pike patterned with purple petunias and pansies from in your mithril alloy quiver.
How's that for reality? Pulling a pike out of my little thigh quiver ;) It also happens to be 4x and somewhat crit weighted, and beautifully altered to boot!

Alas! All the alliteration in that alter is an awkward assault on acceptable aesthetics. :)

I am not sure why it would be considered ugly. A bit over ornamented perhaps, but not ugly.
You see a basic Vultite awl-pike. The pommel (assuming an awl-pike even has one) is formed from a large pink pear and along the length of the pike shaft are intricately carved petunias and pansies with the petunias being worked with a purple dye.

It may be taking into consideration that this lovely pink and purple flower carved serves the purpose of being stuck through people's (or animals/undead) bodies. A lovely flowery weapon of death.
