I have been interested in using a lance for a while and just wanted to know if those using polearms use ambush or aim...or simply strike from the open with out focusing the attack?

Aiming a lance is quite difficult. You cannot hide and ambush with them (or any two handed polearm) of course. To aim for any useful part of the body and hope to hit it, you need 250-300 aiming ranks (ambush + CM) and more would be better. Couple that with the very high base roundtime of 12 seconds and it pretty much limits aimed lances to very high level characters and fast races. All that being said, if you can do it, it is remarkably effective.
