The spell should work on any organic armor that has not already been given resistance, is not currently in the process of being wizard enchanted, or is not heavily scripted of particular nature. IF the armor has padding there is an additional lore requirement to succeed. The armor cannot be destroyed tho if you attempt it an fail.
The easiest crude self test is to see if the armor softens up when you cast at it. However (disclaimer) this does not mean you cant be injured, maimed, or killed by casting on armor that cannot be treated. Nor does it mean you will be successful even if you do cast successfully, each potion pour is a separate attempt and the final cast can also fail.
