I too am a returning rogue after a 4 year hiatus, I was a Two Weapon Combat rogue, but I found using mains Falchion/Backsword with my offhand of a main gauche sort of weak. I usually kill with the main hand, and never get any kills with the gauche or any "big" damage from it or think using the gauche really adds to my DS, perhaps I should suck it up and use my current mains and a shortsword as my offhand?
I saw a post about someone using thrown, is this more effective than Ranged? I really would like to stay away from ranged, and the allure of throwing a dagger or something to that nature is appealing, I also saw someone speaking of a "Returner" weapon, is there a shop for these or a player shop, or a basic description that I can attempt to find one?
Also, I wanted to know everyone's opinnion on armor, I have a haubrek and Brig, I imagine the haubrek would be more protective but with the new mechanics of dodge, would the brig be more effective or is the redux benefits worth wearing the haubrek? I wore brig to some lvl 60 mobs, and dodged more swings IMO than I did in the Haubrek, I didn't experiment with them on getting hit though. ^_=
Thanks!

The only reason to use a main gauche is for the +10 DS. It's basically a dagger, otherwise.
Mind you, it can be effective if you are ambushing from hiding, your target has light or no armor, and you are aiming for a critical target spot, like the eye, for example. On the other hand, if you are ambushing something big (giants on the glacier, say) and you need to chop their leg off before you can hit their head area, a dagger based weapon just won't cut it (pun intended).
In such situations, I have used a handaxe/backsword combination with reasonable success.
"So, what does that green line on the graph represent?"
"Oh, that's the projection of a hypothetical offspring from a union between Sauron and Cruella de Ville; we use that as a baseline for determining character alignment."

I missed the beginning of this thread, but if you happen to brawl as well, sais also offer a +10 to defense in the off hand.

Thrown is... not more effective than Ranged, and has a few problems. That's not to say that it isn't cool or fun. But, it is not as efficient.
Hurling a dagger does not see a lot of damage or high crits. Ambushing with a dagger, again, is more efficient.
Returners are auction quality weapons that return to your hand when thrown. They are expensive, and not many are for sale (a lot of players are holding on to them until the Thrown Review is complete).
If you opt to hurl daggers, axes, or hammers, you will have to train in both the Thrown skill and the relevant weapon skill (edged/blunt) in order to get DS (as said weapons do not INSPECT as THROWN weapons). Conversely, you could train in brawling to have DS when your hands are empty.
The thrown weapons themselves are not that impressive. If someone hurled a dart at Tickle Me Elmo, he wouldn't even smile, because darts don't even tickle.
Blah, blah, etc., etc..
The Thrown Folder would be a better place to get the "full scoop" on the combat style.

Chain class armors (read; hauberk) see the most benefit from Armor Evasion, which you can train in with your armor points. You can also wear armor accessories over hauberk without penalty (and get any bonuses they may have)
Most people suggest wearing MBP though, since it requires the same amount of armor ranks.
Brig is nice if you're casting, and allows for armor accessories without penalty as well.

Ah yes; that is true, and sais perform much better than a dagger on armor up to chain class types.

sais are a second slower then daggers, however they deal puncture only damage which can be very useful for eye crits. The biggest down side to brawling vs edge is that brawling weapons don't fair as well against the heavier armors. The other thing is that brawling costs 3/1 vs the 2/1 of edge. ( I have to agree with Eugie, it should be 2/1 for both) A plus to brawling is that you get DS even when you are empty handed though. All that said even though brawling isn't as popular as edged it is still viable and you can hunt with nothing but brawling weapons all the way to cap if you wanted.

Yeah... makes absolutely no sense. Even less sense than scimitars not being one RT class faster (OMG use them for RP! except they would fill the niche versus all the other weapons in the shortsword RT class then).
But... I've been waiting since day one of GS4 for these things to get changed (as I am sure many of us have), no progress yet! But there have been some interesting changes for rogues, so... perhaps it will continue.
