A few questions on training.... on 10/05/2012 06:00 AM CDT

Just a few questions I had that I'm hoping to find the answers to:

1. What's the deal with redux for monks? Is redux for them not affected by spell training?

2. I was reading on KP, and it's says that if you're trained in TWC you get extra benfit from 1214, but I see nothing posted about that here on the officials. Is TWC a must have? I keep reading about builds with 1 rank, is that why?

3. I know when swinging a weapon there's a difference when AIMing from the open or when hiding(ambushing), but I'm not sure how the AIM mechanics work out with the new UCS. What skills are needed to AIM UCS shots? Is it just Ambush, or would Perception be needed also? Or would CM training be enough to consistently poke out eyeballs from the open?

4. Can you switch stances while webbed? I was thinking about training in two or more stances, for instance, could I switch from flurry to iharmony once I get webbed, then switch back when I get out? I know it's proally just wishful thinking, but does anyone know if it works?

1. Redux works just the same way for monks as everyone else. The more physical training you have, the more redux you get, the more spell training you have the less you get.

2. TWC gives an extra benefit from 1214, but 1214 isn't a big deal anyway. TWC training is for DS. The actual amount from TWC training itself is pretty trivial but 1 rank activates the TWC DS formula which gets you some bonus DS based on your STR and DEX and 0.5x gets you a further bonus amount.

3. Its the same as for melee weapons. Cman and ambush are the relevant skills. If you want reliable eye shots, you are going to need some ambush. Just how much depends on race, stats, and how low a level you want to be able to do it. I don't think anyone can give you a formula, just advice to train more ambush if you haven't got enough yet. It took me (dwarf with DEX set for growth, 7 ranks of ambush to get what I consider reliable head punches around level 30).

4. I don't know. If I can't beat up spiders without giving them a chance to do anything, I stay away from them.

I thought only combat manuevers adds to aiming from he open. Would ucs be different in that regard?

ucs and melee use the same formula

aim skill = ambush skill (from hiding)
= (ambush skill + cman skill)/2 (for open aim)

+ things like DEX bonus, target location and weapon modifiers etc.

Say you want 100 from your skills at level 20 for basic aiming, (and it will be something like that) then you get them from 23 ambush ranks (=99skill) from hiding, or 40 Cman ranks plus 12 ambush ranks (=(140+58)/2=99 skill) for open aiming.

If you just rely on 2x CMan, then it takes you to about level 50 to aim as well from the open as someone with 1x ambush does from hiding at about level 20.

Here's some of the official info on the benefits of TWC/1214. The unarmed combat folder in the hunting and combat area has some good tidbits. I had to force the forum software to show me threads older than a couple of months though. 1214 does give a nice benefit, another chance to outright parry if both hands are open (which also means another chance to disarm). Keep in mind you'll need to be at least .5x in TWC to get the sai/maine gauche offhand DS bonus:

3.) UCS compatible gloves now add their enchant bonus to parry DS in the same way as a one-handed weapon.

4.) An empty left hand now provides parry DS similar to that of a main gauche or sai, for those characters trained in brawling and two weapon combat.

5.) Brace (spell 1214) now allows two chances to outright parry an attack for double open handed combatants trained in two weapon combat.

Well, my training just got a LOT more complicated, lol! Thanks for all the quick info. guys, I need to play with these numbers s'more and figure out how I'm gonna build my monk, but this helps BIG time! Got about another 2 weeks before my 30 days is up.

Does anyone happen to know if tsoran's skill trainer has been updated to include monks yet? I heard he isn't playing anymore but someone has got to able to make a monk spreadsheet right? I suck at excel =o(

I have a feeling you can't switch stances while webbed (or stunned, etc..) but just to make sure someone get rank 3 iharmony and find out, that would be AWESOME!!

GSguide.net has an updated version that includes monks and if you search for it on the player's corner you'll find one there as well.

Here's a link to one of the versions, I think its the latest one but I could be wrong. It is updated for monks though. It links to a google doc version, you have to hit File, then Download.
